Drei Donà - Tenuta La Palazza is a 23-hectare estate in the Predappio sub-zone of Romagna DOC, set on Pliocene calcareous-clay terraces above Massa di Vecchiazzano just outside Forlì. The Counts Drei Donà have farmed the property since the 1920s, and it is the only Emilia-Romagna winery currently in the Comitato Grandi Cru d'Italia. Sangiovese is the heart of the cellar, joined by an early-1980s Cabernet Sauvignon planting that helped redraw what Romagna red could be.

EnquireThe estate sits on the northern shoulder of the Predappio sub-zone, a stretch of hillside between Forlì, Castrocaro Terme and Predappio recognised as one of the twelve Romagna DOC sub-zones since 2011. A 15th-century watchtower built in the time of Caterina Sforza anchors the farmhouse, and the surrounding 23 hectares break into three south- and south-east-facing parcels of Pliocene calcareous clay laced with sand, planted to vines, almonds, mulberries and Mediterranean pines. Count Claudio Drei Donà left the Forlì bar in the early 1980s to remake the cellar full time, replacing the old bulk-wine trade with bottled estate wine and reshaping the vineyards. He planted the first polyclonal Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard in Romagna at a time when the variety was not yet authorised in the region, and added Chardonnay and Riesling to give the estate an international register alongside its Sangiovese. Today the cellar is run by his children Enrico and Ida Vittoria with their mother Donna Giovanna, who has anchored the household since the start. Farming follows organic and biodynamic discipline. Claudio founded Agricoltura Viva, a sustainable-farming association inside Confagricoltura Forlì, in 1987, then moved the vineyards onto integrated pest management in 1992 and dropped chemical herbicides altogether. The full estate completed its organic conversion in 2015 and began biodynamic conversion in 2020, while the cellar runs on 100% solar power. Pre-phylloxera rows still survive in older parcels and are sometimes vinified separately in terracotta amphorae. The cellar approach borrows the Bordeaux chateau model: hand harvest, parcel-by-parcel vinification, indigenous yeasts, slow racking by gravity, and long ageing in a mix of large Slavonian casks, French barriques and terracotta. The Predappio DOC Notturno is matured in big botti, while the riserva-tier Vigna del Pruno (single-vineyard Sangiovese), Magnificat (Cabernet Sauvignon) and Graf Noir age in barrique and amphora. Il Tornese carries the white-grape signature first set by Claudio's Chardonnay plantings. Drei Donà is the only Emilia-Romagna estate currently in the Comitato Grandi Cru d'Italia, the 130-member Italian fine-wine club, and the family's quiet, slightly contrarian approach is part of why. There are no architectural set-pieces here, just a working country house, vineyards, horses and a pack of Corgis. The visit reflects the same register: a couple of guided tastings each day in the old stables, with house bread and the estate's own extra-virgin olive oil.
