Tasting Notes

What Ruffino's Aqua di Venus Rosé tastes like

Ruffino's own note picks out wild strawberry, spice and an icy touch. Add the dry-herb scent of the Mediterranean scrub and a salty edge. Made in steel with no oak, so the fruit stays fresh and the finish stays stony.

Wild strawberry first, then a light dusting of spice and a cool, almost icy lift: Ruffino's own note picks out all three. Behind the fruit sits the dry-herb scent of the Mediterranean scrub, with a squeeze of citrus.

Palate

Light-bodied and bone dry, with barely a gram of sugar per litre. The grapes were pressed very gently and fermented cool in steel, so the fruit stays fresh and clean. Four months resting on its spent yeast in tank round it out, and the Syrah gives it a gentle grip. The salty edge is pronounced, and it is the mark of this wine.

Finish

Clean, stony and salty rather than sweet, and it lingers well. It leaves the mouth dry and ready for the next bite of fish.

Overall

A Provençal-style rosé from vines 190 to 250 metres up, on the iron-rich clay of the Maremma coast. The ribbed bottle copies the shell in Botticelli's Birth of Venus. Open it from 2026 to 2028, as an aperitif or with fish, while the strawberry fruit drinkers pick out most is fresh.

Two UK shops sell the 2025 Aqua di Venus Rosé

The 2025 is listed at £18.50 and £18.90 a bottle, duty and VAT included. The dearer figure is a sale price cut from its usual list. That puts it in the upper middle of the Toscana IGT rosés sold in the UK.

Wine fit score

Where Aqua di Venus Rosé fits: food and beginners first

Its strongest cards are food and beginner-friendliness. A dry, salty rosé that covers shellfish, fish, white meat and antipasti, and is easy to like from the first sip.

Best with food 8.5/10

A dry, salty rosé with fresh acidity and 13% alcohol. It covers shellfish, baked and fried fish, white meat, cold cuts and antipasti; only real chilli heat defeats it.

Best intro to this style 8.2/10

A dry, fruity, light rosé from a Tuscan house founded in 1877, easy to like from the first sip. Wild strawberry, citrus and a salty finish, with no oak and no bitterness to learn.

Best value 6.5/10

At £18.50 to £18.90 for the 2025 it sits in the upper middle of the UK's Toscana IGT rosés. Part of the price is the Ruffino name and the designer bottle.

Best everyday bottle 6.2/10

Light, dry and easy: an aperitif and fish wine for warm evenings. At £18.50 to £18.90 it is a treat rather than a weeknight habit.

Best for an occasion 4.5/10

The ribbed Venus bottle and the Ruffino name make it a good gift or summer-party wine. It is still a young-drinking Toscana IGT rosé, not a bottle for a landmark dinner.

Best for cellar 2.0/10

Made in steel for freshness and sold young: drink the 2025 by 2028, as nothing here improves in a cellar.

Scoring is rule-based and deterministic. The model and weightings are documented in our Wine Fit Score methodology.

The 2025 Aqua di Venus Rosé: a wet spring, then a hot summer

The 2025 grew through a wet spring, then a very hot July and August cooled by storms. Early harvest reports from the Maremma coast called it a regular, healthy year with a smaller crop. Drink it from 2026 to 2028.

The disciplinare, the place, the label

What the critics gave Aqua di Venus Rosé

Falstaff gave the 2024 89 points and the 2021 90. Decanter scored the 2019 89 and called it "restrained and Provençal in style, bone-dry". We have found no critic score for the 2025 yet.

01

DOC, DOCG, IGT: what the badges mean

Italian wine law sorts bottles into a pyramid. DOCG sits at the top: tightly drawn boundaries, prescribed grapes, mandatory ageing, government tasting before release. DOC is the same idea with looser thresholds. IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) is broader still, requiring only that 85% of the grapes come from the named territory.

Toscana is in the IGT tier. That is not a quality verdict, it is a description of how much freedom the producer has at vinification and ageing.

A ribbed bottle shaped on Botticelli's Venus shell, not a standard mould

    Cost up

Ruffino designed the ribbed glass as a tribute to The Birth of Venus. The bottle is a custom piece, not stock rosé glass. That packaging is part of the £18.50 to £18.90 price.

  2. 02

Hand-picked grapes pressed very gently to keep the fresh aromas

    Cost up

The grapes are picked by hand and pressed very gently as soon as they reach the winery. That is slower and dearer than machine picking, and it holds the wild strawberry and citrus scent.

  3. 03

    Steel only, no barrels

    Cost down

The wine ferments cool in steel and rests in temperature-controlled tanks, with four months on its spent yeast. There is no oak to buy or fill, which keeps a rosé's cellar cost low.

  4. 04

A big Tuscan house with over 600 hectares of vines

    Cost down

Ruffino farms over 600 hectares across eight estates, about 840 football pitches. It has been part of Constellation Brands since 2011. That scale spreads winery and marketing costs over millions of bottles.

  5. 05

UK duty and VAT inside the price

    Cost up

Of the £18.50 to £18.90 the two shops ask for the 2025, about £6.10 is tax. That is £2.99 duty on a 13% bottle, at £30.62 per litre of pure alcohol, plus VAT at a sixth of the price.

Food Pairing

Fish, shellfish and Tuscan crostini: what to eat with Aqua di Venus Rosé

Ruffino puts chilled starters, oven-baked fish, fish soups and offal-topped Tuscan toasts at the top of its list. The salty, stony finish and the fresh acidity do the work; only chilli heat defeats it.

Salt balance Strong match

Mussels, octopus and the Italian seafood table

The salty, stony edge of this Syrah-led Tuscan rosé meets the brine of mussels and octopus head on. The wild strawberry fruit stops it tasting austere. Its fresh acidity cuts the oil in a squid ink risotto. A dry rosé from the Maremma coast is built for this food.

Try with: Impepata di cozze · Cozze arraganate · Polpo alla pignata · Squid ink risotto · More pairings →

Fat cutting Strong match

Baked and fried fish

Oven-baked fish and fish soups are on the producer's own list, and fried fish works for the same reason. The fresh acidity of this light Tuscan rosé cuts through batter, oil and buttery sauces. Its citrus and strawberry notes do what a wedge of lemon does.

Try with: Fish and Chips · Baccala Mantecato · Prawn Tempura · Salt and pepper prawns

Aromatic bridge Good match

Tuscan crostini, cold cuts and antipasti

Ruffino suggests roasted game and offal-topped Tuscan toasts, and the wine's dry-herb, spicy scent links to rosemary, pepper and cured pork. The salt in porchetta and cured meat makes the strawberry fruit taste riper. Serve it cold with a board of antipasti.

Try with: Porchetta · Vitello Tonnato · Focaccia · Arancini · More pairings →

Body matching Good match

Roast chicken and grilled white meat

A light-bodied Tuscan rosé matches the weight of roast chicken and grilled white meat without drowning them, which a heavy red would. The acidity freshens each bite and the gentle Syrah grip stands up to crisp skin.

Try with: Roast chicken · Lemon chicken · Chicken Shawarma · Roast pork

Acidity matching Good match

Sushi, sashimi and tempura

Raw fish wants a wine that is clean, dry and cold, and this Maremma rosé is all three. Its salty finish sits next to soy without fighting it. Its acidity lifts the fat in salmon sashimi and cuts the tempura batter.

Try with: Sashimi · Nigiri Sushi · Prawn Tempura · More pairings →

Avoid Clash

Hot curries and chilli heat

Chilli heat makes the 13% alcohol burn and flattens the delicate wild strawberry fruit. A madras or a jungle curry leaves this rosé tasting thin and hot, because its dryness gives the heat nothing to lean on. For real heat, pick a lightly sweet, low-alcohol Moscato d'Asti instead.

Skip with: Chicken madras · Chicken jalfrezi · Szechuan chicken · Jungle Curry · Pairing guide →

Drinking + cellar

Aqua di Venus Rosé is a wine to drink young, not to keep

Made in temperature-controlled steel: drink the 2025 from 2026 to 2028 and serve it well chilled. The point of this rosé is the fresh strawberry fruit of its first two years, so there is no reason to hunt for older vintages.

Drinking window
2026 → 2028

Best in the years above; holds without falling over either side.

Decanting
30 minutes

A short splash decant softens the first-pour edge and opens the aromatics.

Serving temperature
8-10°C

Aim for the cooler end on a warm day; warmer end opens up more aromatics.

Cellar potential
Low

Made in steel for freshness and sold young: drink the 2025 by 2028, as nothing here improves in a cellar.

Ruffino, Toscana IGT and the grapes behind Aqua di Venus Rosé

Common Questions

Syrah, Vermentino, Pinot Grigio and Sangiovese, grown on the Maremma coast in southern Tuscany. Ruffino's own pages do not agree on the exact shares. One of them also lists small amounts of Merlot and Chardonnay, so we print no percentages. The blend has changed over the years: the 2019 was Syrah, Sangiovese and Pinot Grigio only.

Dry, with about one gram of sugar per litre in the 2025, which the mouth reads as none. It drinks in the Provençal style: pale, light-bodied, with wild strawberry and citrus fruit and a salty, stony finish.

Wild strawberry, a touch of spice and a cool citrus lift on the nose. Then a light, bone-dry palate with a pronounced salty edge and a clean, stony finish. Falstaff gave the 2024 89 points. Its note: "yellow apple and a subtle hint of wild berries on the nose, with a touch of citrus and marjoram on the finish".

Two UK shops list the 2025, at £18.50 and £18.90 a bottle with duty and VAT included. The second figure is a sale price cut from its usual list. Prices move, so check the offers on this page before you order.

Drink the 2025 between 2026 and 2028. It is made in steel with no oak and sold for freshness. The wild strawberry fruit is at its best in the first two years, and a cellar adds nothing.

The ribs copy the shell on which Venus rises from the sea in Botticelli's Birth of Venus, finished in 1485. Ruffino named the wine after the goddess and designed the bottle as a tribute to the painting.
