- Typical of Pinot Nero
Red fruit first: cherry and wild berries, with plum behind. Then vanilla and tobacco from the French oak barrels, and a leathery, earthy note. The grapes grow on terraces around the Bachmannhof farm, up to 700 metres, where cool nights keep the scent fresh.
Dry and smooth, with soft tannin and a firm core of fruit. Weathered porphyry rock under the vines and big swings between day and night give it a spicy, elegant edge.
The finish is dry, with the smooth tannin holding to the end. Grower Robert Oberkofler's steep terraces, with slopes of up to 60%, give a delicate, spicy and elegant wine.
A Pinot Nero Riserva from a Bolzano cooperative of 224 families, which drinkers rate warmly for its red fruit and oak. Open the 2022 now with roast duck or game, or keep it to about 2030.

What the Bachmann Pinot Nero Riserva is best for
Its strongest cards are food and value: a fresh, soft-tannin red for duck and game, among the cheapest Alto Adige Pinot Nero Riservas on this site.
A fresh, soft-tannin Pinot Nero from mountain terraces: it sits well with duck, game, mushrooms, dumplings with speck and white meat alike.
At £20.50, this Riserva is among the cheapest Alto Adige Pinot Nero Riservas on this site. The grower's steep terraces and French oak come with it.
Easy to like: cherry and red berries, soft tannin and a touch of vanilla. The 14% alcohol and oak spice make it a little fuller than a first Pinot Nero.
A named-farm Riserva from a Bolzano cooperative of 224 families, dressed up enough for a roast duck dinner at about £20.
A Riserva with French oak behind it: it will keep to about 2030, though it is a wine to enjoy rather than a long-term keeper.
Above £20 and a Riserva, so more a Sunday or dinner-party red than a weeknight one.
Scoring is rule-based and deterministic. The model and weightings are documented in our Wine Fit Score methodology.

Dishes that fit a mountain Pinot Nero from Bolzano
Cherry fruit, soft tannin and oak spice: this Riserva suits roast duck, game, mushroom risotto and the bread dumplings of the Bolzano valleys.
Roast duck and game birds
The cherry and red berry fruit in this Alto Adige Pinot Nero meets the sweetness of roast duck head on. Its soft tannin does not fight the lean meat, and the tobacco note from the oak picks up the roasting flavours.
Try with: Roast Duck · Duck breast · Venison Stew
Mushroom risotto and earthy dishes
A mountain Pinot Nero keeps its freshness, and that lifts a buttery mushroom risotto instead of sitting heavy on it. The leathery, earthy side of the wine matches the mushrooms.
Try with: Porcini mushroom risotto · Truffle risotto · Pumpkin risotto · More pairings →
Tyrolean dumplings and speck
Bread dumplings with speck are the home cooking of the valleys around Bolzano. This medium-weight red has enough fruit to carry the smoked ham and enough freshness to cut through the butter.
Try with: Canederli · Spatzle or Tyrolean dumplings · Roast pork
Roast chicken and pork
Soft tannin and ripe cherry fruit make this Riserva an easy red for white meat. Roast chicken brings out the fruit, and the wine's spice from French oak gives plain pork something to lean on.
Try with: Roast chicken · Roast pork · Pork belly · More pairings →
Lamb and medium-aged cheese
The freshness of a Pinot Nero grown high above Bolzano cuts the fat of lamb chops and a cheese board. Keep the cheeses medium-aged: a very strong one would bury this delicate red.
Try with: Lamb chops · Rack of lamb · Cheese board · More pairings →
Hot curries and sweet sauces
Chilli heat makes the 14% alcohol in this wine burn and hides its delicate red fruit. Sweet and sour sauces make a dry Pinot Nero taste thin and sour beside them.
Skip with: Lamb bhuna · Green curry · Sweet and sour pork · Szechuan beef · Pairing guide →
Keeping the Bachmann Pinot Nero Riserva 2022
A Riserva from French oak that is ready now. We would drink it from now to about 2030; a few years in the cellar will soften the oak spice further.
Best in the years above; holds without falling over either side.
Pour it straight from the bottle.
Aim for the cooler end on a warm day; warmer end opens up more aromatics.
A Riserva with French oak behind it: it will keep to about 2030, though it is a wine to enjoy rather than a long-term keeper.
£22.50 for a 75cl bottle of the 2022, at XtraWine, is the best price we track, and we have no signal of further discounting.
