Ripe cherry and plum lead, with cocoa and vanilla from four months in French oak barriques. Drinkers pick out the oak and dark fruit most, with dried plum and a touch of leather behind them. The producer's own note for Mandus names the same cherries, plums, cocoa and vanilla.

The wine is full and smooth, with the structure PietraPura promises. The grapes soak on their skins at a controlled temperature, then get a gentle pressing, so the tannins are firm but fine rather than rough. Acidity stays fresh enough to keep the ripe fruit from feeling heavy. At 14%, the 2024 carries some warmth through the middle.

Finish

Ripe fruit and sweet spice return on a long, warm finish.

Overall

Mandus is the standard Primitivo di Manduria in PietraPura's range, below the Cotis Riserva, and it is made to drink young. Choose it for ripe fruit, vanilla and a soft feel with a meat ragù or a game stew.

Wine fit score

Where PietraPura Mandus fits your table

Mandus puts ripe fruit, a smooth feel and a touch of vanilla first. Choose it for a hearty meal rather than for keeping.

Best intro to this style 8.5/10

Ripe fruit, vanilla and a soft feel make Mandus an easy first Primitivo di Manduria, though its 14% strength needs a meal beside it.

Best with food 8.0/10

Mandus works best with meat sauces, game and aged cheese; its weight and oak limit lighter matches such as fish or salads.

Best value 7.2/10

At the current Vino.com price, Mandus sits a little below the middle of the Primitivo di Manduria wines we track in stock, a fair price for the quality.

Best everyday bottle 6.8/10

Modestly priced and easy to like, Mandus suits a weeknight ragù; the 14% strength and robust style make it less flexible than a lighter red.

Best for an occasion 4.0/10

Mandus is the standard DOC in its line rather than the Riserva, so it fits a hearty dinner better than a special bottle.

Best for cellar 3.0/10

Primitivo di Manduria DOC sets no minimum ageing and Mandus spends only four months in oak, so it is made for drinking within about three years.

Scoring is rule-based and deterministic. The model and weightings are documented in our Wine Fit Score methodology.

The disciplinare, the place, the label

Primitivo di Manduria DOC, the Salento's ripe red

Primitivo di Manduria DOC covers vineyards around Manduria, on the Ionian side of the Salento in the provinces of Taranto and Brindisi. The rules ask for at least 13.5% alcohol, and Mandus sits at 14%.

01

DOC, DOCG, IGT: what the badges mean

Italian wine law sorts bottles into a pyramid. DOCG sits at the top: tightly drawn boundaries, prescribed grapes, mandatory ageing, government tasting before release. DOC is the same idea with looser thresholds. IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) is broader still, requiring only that 85% of the grapes come from the named territory.

Primitivo di Manduria is in the DOC tier. That is not a quality verdict, it is a description of how much freedom the producer has at vinification and ageing.

Four months in French oak barriques

    Cost up

PietraPura ages Mandus for about four months in small French oak barrels, which cost more than tanks and hold the wine back from sale for a season.

  2. 02

Grapes chosen by Rocca delle Macìe's team

    Cost up

The Primitivo comes from vineyards picked by Rocca delle Macìe's technicians, and the estate's winemaker Luca Francioni oversees the wine from fermentation to bottling in Puglia.

  3. 03

UK duty and VAT inside the £18.30

    Cost up

At 14%, a 75cl bottle pays about £3.22 of duty (0.75 litres x 14% x £30.62 per litre of pure alcohol). VAT is a sixth of the price, about £3.05, so roughly £6.27 of the £18.30 is tax.

  4. 04

One shop sending it from Italy

    Cost up

Vino.com is the only UK shop we track with Mandus in stock, so no competing offer pulls the £18.30 price down. Delivery from Italy is charged on top.

  5. 05

No minimum ageing under the DOC rules

    Cost down

Primitivo di Manduria DOC sets no minimum ageing, so the 2024 Mandus could be sold within about two years of harvest with little cellar time to finance.

  6. 06

A brand line, not an estate of its own

    Cost down

PietraPura is a line Rocca delle Macie makes with partner wineries in Puglia, from grapes selected in the Salento. So the price carries no estate land or vineyard staff of its own.

Food Pairing

Meat ragù, game and aged cheese with Mandus

The producer suggests meat sauces, game and mature cheese, and the wine's ripe fruit and fine tannins back that up. Keep fierce chilli away from its 14% warmth.

Body matching Strong match

Meat ragù with the weight of Mandus

A slow-cooked meat sauce has the richness this full Primitivo needs. Its ripe cherry and plum stay clear beside the meat, while the fine tannins and 14% warmth match the sauce rather than fight it.

Try with: Ragu alla bolognese · Lasagna · Agnello Ragu Lucano · More pairings →

Tannin softening Strong match

Game and slow-cooked red meat

Game is the producer's own suggestion for Mandus. The meat's protein softens the firm tannins, and the wine's cocoa and vanilla sit well against the deeper flavour of a venison or pheasant dish.

Try with: Venison Stew · Roast Pheasant · Sunday Roast Beef · More pairings →

Salt balance Good match

Aged cheese against the ripe fruit

Salty, mature cheese makes the ripe fruit in Mandus taste sweeter and rounder. The fat in the cheese smooths the grip of the tannin, and the wine has enough weight to hold up to a strong cheddar.

Try with: Strong cheddar cheese · Lancashire Cheese · Red Leicester · More pairings →

Aromatic bridge Good match

Roast and barbecued meat for the oak

The vanilla and cocoa from four months in barriques echo the char on roast or barbecued meat. The ripe fruit then does the job a sweet glaze would, so the plate needs no extra sauce.

Try with: BBQ ribs · Pulled pork · Roast pork · More pairings →

Avoid Clash

Keep Mandus away from fierce chilli and light fish

Hot chilli makes this 14% Primitivo feel hotter and its tannins harsher. Delicate fish is the other poor match, because the wine's weight and oak flatten it.

Skip with: Vindaloo · Thai green curry · Grilled sea bass · Pairing guide →

The grape, the zone and the brand behind Mandus

Common Questions

PietraPura is a brand of Rocca delle Macìe, the Zingarelli family's Chianti Classico estate in Tuscany. The grapes are chosen in the Salento area of Puglia, and the wine is made and bottled there under the estate's winemaker, Luca Francioni.

Ripe cherry and plum lead, with cocoa and vanilla from four months in French oak barriques. It is full and smooth, with firm but fine tannins and a warm 14% finish.

It is 100% Primitivo from the Primitivo di Manduria DOC zone around Manduria in Puglia. Primitivo is the same grape as California's Zinfandel.

No. Mandus is the standard Primitivo di Manduria DOC in the PietraPura line. Cotis is the Riserva, which must age for at least two years before sale, and it costs more.

Meat ragù, lasagna, game stews and aged cheese suit its weight and ripe fruit. Serve it at 16 to 18°C, and keep it away from very hot chilli dishes, which make its 14% alcohol feel hotter.
