Sicily's everyday white from Donnafugata: lemon peel, white peach and a salty edge, at 12.5% and no oak. It was the first wine the Rallo family made here, in 1983, and it still suits fried fish and a squeeze of lemon.

Tasting Notes

Lemon peel, white peach and a salty edge

Donnafugata ferments Anthilia in steel and keeps it away from wood, so what you smell is the fruit and nothing else. The acidity is high for a wine this light in alcohol, and you taste it as a clean lemony snap.

Nose

Lemon peel and white peach come first, with a soft floral lift behind them. Donnafugata never puts this wine near oak, so nothing sits between you and the fruit. Alfredo Ravanetti of the Italian site Wine Dharma also found yellow flowers and a light herbal edge.

Palate

The fruit is pear and peach, the notes Vivino drinkers name most often across 2,997 written reviews. Acidity is high for a wine of only 12.5%, so it stays tight and clean rather than soft. There is a light saltiness through the middle, which the Contessa Entellina hills give it: warm days, cool nights, grapes that keep their bite.

Finish

Short and clean, with a lemon snap at the end. It is built for a second glass, and Donnafugata says to drink it within three years.

Overall

Anthilia was the first wine the Rallo family made at Donnafugata, back in 1983, and it still tastes like a house white rather than a show wine. Crisp, lemony, faintly salty, and easy to finish.

Why a €10.50 Sicilian white costs more here

Donnafugata's own shop in Sicily prices Anthilia at €10.50. In Britain the same bottle carries £2.87 of duty and 20% VAT before shipping and shop margin, and that is most of the gap. It is sold as a wine to open now, not to store.

Wine fit score

Where Anthilia earns its keep

It scores high for food and for ease, low for keeping. That is the wine Donnafugata set out to make: 12.5% alcohol, no wood, and fruit picked for drinkability rather than power.

Best intro to this style 8.8/10

No tannin, no oak, no puzzle: a clean lemony white that a first-time buyer will understand at once.

Best with food 8.4/10

Goes with almost any light plate, and the acidity does real work on fried and salty food.

Best everyday bottle 7.2/10

A weeknight bottle in every way except the UK price, which pushes it past a true everyday buy.

Best value 6.6/10

Good value near the bottom of its UK range, much less so at £20, given that Donnafugata sells it at home for €10.50.

Best for an occasion 3.6/10

Pleasant and well made, but an entry-level island white is not what most people open for a big occasion.

Best for cellar 1.2/10

Made to drink young, with two months in tank and no wood, so there is nothing to gain by keeping it.

Scoring is rule-based and deterministic. The model and weightings are documented in our Wine Fit Score methodology.

2024 was a drought year, 2025 was not

At Contessa Entellina the 2024 season brought 409 mm of rain against a normal 651 mm. Donnafugata pumped water from its own reservoirs to save the crop. In 2025 the rain came back and the summer stayed mild, so picking began on 28 July rather than a record-early 22 July.

A kind year in western Sicily. Rain fell through the season and the summer stayed mild, so Donnafugata started picking at Contessa Entellina on 28 July, later than the record-early 2024. Drink it now while the lemon and peach are fresh.

The disciplinare, the place, the label

Sicilia DOC covers the whole island

Sicilia went from a regional IGT label to a full DOC in 2011, and a white can come from any part of the island. At least half must be Catarratto, Inzolia, Grillo, Grecanico, Chardonnay, Viognier or Sauvignon. The crop limit is a generous 13 tonnes of grapes per hectare.

01

DOC, DOCG, IGT: what the badges mean

Italian wine law sorts bottles into a pyramid. DOCG sits at the top: tightly drawn boundaries, prescribed grapes, mandatory ageing, government tasting before release. DOC is the same idea with looser thresholds. IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) is broader still, requiring only that 85% of the grapes come from the named territory.

Sicilia is in the DOC tier. That is not a quality verdict, it is a description of how much freedom the producer has at vinification and ageing.

02

The denomination rules, in detail

  • Allowed grapes. 11 varieties listed in the disciplinare
  • Yield ceiling. 13.0 tonnes per hectare
  • Tasting panel. No mandatory pre-release tasting
03

  1. 01

UK duty and VAT on a 12.5% bottle

    Cost up

Duty is £2.87 and VAT adds a fifth on top. On a £15 bottle that is about £5.37 gone before anyone pays for the wine, the shipping or the shop.

  2. 02

Donnafugata sells it for €10.50 in its own Sicilian shop

    Cost up

British shelves ask roughly £15 to £20 for the same 2025 bottle. Nearly all of the gap is tax, freight from Marsala and the retailer's margin, not the wine itself.

  3. 03

No barrels and no long wait

    Cost down

Two months in tank, about two months in bottle, and it ships. Money is not tied up for years, which is why a wine from a famous Sicilian name still lands under £20.

  4. 04

    A generous crop is allowed

    Cost down

The Sicilia DOC rulebook lets a white take 13 tonnes of grapes per hectare, and Donnafugata picks 8 to 9. More wine from each field keeps the cost of every bottle down.

  5. 05

A light bottle made on the island

    Cost down

The Wine Society lists the empty bottle at 410 g. Donnafugata moved Anthilia into light Sicilian recycled-glass bottles from the 2023, which cuts what it costs to ship.

  6. 06

Contessa Entellina had to be watered in 2024

    Cost up

Rain there fell to 409 mm against a normal 651 mm, so the estate pumped from its own reservoirs. The crop came in under average, and a smaller crop costs more per bottle to make.

Perfect Pairings

Dishes that go with this wine

Food Pairing

Sicilian fried fish is the home match

Donnafugata's own advice is raw and fried fish, vegetable pies, fresh cheese and white meat. Vivino's wine experts suggest shellfish and starters. It all points one way: salt, lemon and light food.

Acidity matching Strong match

Fried food, from the chip shop to a Sicilian street stall

The acidity scrubs the fat off hot batter and resets your mouth between bites. This is a lean, lemony Sicilian white built on Catarratto, so it does the job without adding weight of its own.

Try with: Fish and Chips · Arancini · Pizza Fritta · Salt and pepper squid · More pairings →

Salt balance Strong match

Raw fish and shellfish

Oysters and raw fish need salt and citrus, not richness. Anthilia has both, and the faint salty edge in this dry Sicilia DOC white sits with shellfish the way a lemon wedge does.

Try with: Oysters · Sashimi · Impepata di cozze · Cozze arraganate · More pairings →

Aromatic bridge Good match

Swordfish and other salty fish dishes

Swordfish with capers and olives is a strong, salty dish, and a soft wine disappears under it. This crisp Sicilian white has the acidity to answer back, and the same island flavours to match it.

Try with: Pesce spada alla Siciliana · Fregula ai frutti di mare · Baccalà Mantecato · More pairings →

Fat cutting Good match

Fresh cheese and vegetable starters

Young mozzarella and ricotta are creamy but mild, so they need lift rather than power. The lemon and pear fruit of this dry Sicilian white cuts the cream and leaves the cheese tasting fresher.

Try with: Insalata Caprese · Torta pasqualina · Focaccia · More pairings →

Body matching Good match

Cold veal and breadcrumbed cuts

Vitello tonnato is rich with tuna and mayonnaise, and it wants a wine with bite. At 12.5% this light Sicilian white keeps up without smothering the meat, and its citrus edge does what a squeeze of lemon does.

Try with: Vitello Tonnato · Cotoletta alla Milanese · Steamed sea bass · More pairings →

Avoid Clash

Chilli heat flattens it

Heat strips the fruit out of a delicate white and leaves only the acid, which then tastes sharp. Save Anthilia for gentler plates, and pour a soft, juicy Frappato from the same island with anything hot.

Skip with: Pasta arrabbiata · Pizza Diavola · Goan fish curry · Pairing guide →

Drinking + cellar

Anthilia is not a bottle to lay down

Donnafugata says to drink it within three years, and The Wine Society gives the 2025 until 2028. There is no oak and no long ageing to build on, so waiting gains nothing. Buy it for this summer.

Common Questions

Lemon peel, white peach and pear, with a light salty edge and a clean, short finish. It is dry, fresh and only 12.5% alcohol. Donnafugata keeps it out of oak, so the fruit is what you get.

Fish, above all fried fish and raw fish. Donnafugata suggests mixed starters, vegetable pies, fresh cheese and white meat. Sicilian swordfish, mussels and arancini all work.

Mostly Catarratto, the white grape Sicily grows more of than any other, which Donnafugata calls by its local name Lucido. Small amounts of other white grapes are blended in. The Sicilia DOC rules ask for at least half from a named list, and Catarratto is on it.

Drink it within three years of the vintage, which is Donnafugata's own advice. The Wine Society gives the 2025 until 2028. There is no oak and no long ageing behind it, so there is nothing to wait for.

It sits at about £15 to £20 in Britain, against €10.50 in Donnafugata's own Sicilian shop. UK duty of £2.87 and 20% VAT explain most of that gap. At home in Sicily it is a supermarket bottle at €7 to €10.

Southwest Sicily, from Donnafugata's Contessa Entellina estate and nearby vineyards. The winery itself is in Marsala, on the west coast. Anthilia was the first wine the Rallo family made at Donnafugata, in 1983.
