Tenuta San Francesco's standard Tramonti red sits below its 4 Spine Riserva and works through a whole meal, from now to 2029. Drinkers rate it well and name red fruit such as cherry and raspberry most often.

How the Tramonti Rosso scores

Best with food and Best intro to this style lead its scores. Tenuta San Francesco describes this Tramonti Rosso as fresh and supple, a red for the whole meal.

Best with food 8.5/10

Fresh and medium-bodied, with red fruit and spice, it suits tomato sauces, red meat, medium-aged cheese and meaty fish. Tenuta San Francesco calls it a red for the whole meal.

Best intro to this style 7.2/10

Supple, fresh and easy to drink, with familiar red fruit and spice. It is a gentle first taste of the Amalfi Coast's own grapes, Tintore and Piedirosso.

Best value 6.8/10

About £23 for a red aged 18 to 24 months before release. That is at the lower end for a Costa d'Amalfi red, though it is not a bargain everyday price.

Best for an occasion 5.8/10

It brings the Amalfi Coast's own grapes, Tintore and Piedirosso, to the table, a good talking point at dinner. It is a fresh table red rather than a grand bottle.

Best everyday bottle 5.5/10

Easy to drink and good with many dishes, though at about £23 it is more of a weekend bottle than a weeknight one.

Best for cellar 4.0/10

A red to drink within a few years: we would open the 2023 by 2029. The estate's own sheets claim long ageing potential for its 4 Spine Riserva, not for this wine.

Scoring is rule-based and deterministic. The model and weightings are documented in our Wine Fit Score methodology.

The disciplinare, the place, the label

Tenuta San Francesco and the Tramonti terraces

Four local growers, among them Gaetano and Generoso Bove, founded Tenuta San Francesco in Tramonti in 2004. The winery sits in an 18th-century family estate, and all its vines grow on steep terraces between 200 and 600 metres.

01

DOC, DOCG, IGT: what the badges mean

Italian wine law sorts bottles into a pyramid. DOCG sits at the top: tightly drawn boundaries, prescribed grapes, mandatory ageing, government tasting before release. DOC is the same idea with looser thresholds. IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) is broader still, requiring only that 85% of the grapes come from the named territory.

Costa d'Amalfi is in the DOC tier. That is not a quality verdict, it is a description of how much freedom the producer has at vinification and ageing.

Food Pairing

What to eat with a fresh Costa d'Amalfi red

Tenuta San Francesco names red meat, medium-aged cheese and fish dishes for this Tramonti Rosso. Its freshness also suits tomato sauces and pizza.

Acidity matching Strong match

Tomato sauce, pizza and baked aubergine

The wine's freshness meets the sharpness of tomato, so the sauce tastes rounder and the wine stays lively. A fresh Campanian red like this Tramonti Rosso, from Aglianico, Tintore and Piedirosso, suits pizza, baked pasta and baked aubergine.

Try with: Pizza Margherita · Eggplant parmesan · Lasagna · Frittata di maccheroni · More pairings →

Body matching Strong match

Grilled and roast red meat

Red meat is one of the matches Tenuta San Francesco names for this wine. A medium-bodied red from Aglianico, Tintore and Piedirosso, with spice and tobacco, has the weight for lamb chops or a steak without swamping them.

Try with: Lamb chops · Fiorentina steak · Agnello Ragu Lucano · Arrosticini · More pairings →

Fat cutting Good match

Medium-aged cheeses

The fresh edge of this Costa d'Amalfi red cleans the palate between bites of semi-firm cheese, so each mouthful tastes fresh again. The estate suggests medium-aged cheeses, and caciocavallo from southern Italy is an easy place to start.

Try with: Caciocavallo farcito · Pecorino sardo e pan carasau · Cheese board

Aromatic bridge Good match

Herby roast pork and rabbit

The spice and tobacco in this Tramonti Rosso echo the herbs, garlic and pepper in porchetta and other herby roasts. Its medium body suits pork and rabbit without feeling heavy.

Try with: Porchetta · Roast pork · Coniglio alla ligure

Body matching Good match

Meaty fish such as swordfish and tuna

Tenuta San Francesco says this red works with fish too. A supple, medium-bodied red from Aglianico, Tintore and Piedirosso has the weight for meaty fish, and its freshness keeps the dish light.

Try with: Pesce spada alla Siciliana · Tuna · Polpo alla pignata

Avoid Clash

Fiery chilli dishes

Strong chilli heat makes the alcohol and grip of a red like this Tramonti Rosso feel hotter and harsher. It also buries the red fruit and violets that make the wine worth opening.

Skip with: Chicken madras · Chicken jalfrezi · Szechuan beef · Crispy chilli beef · Pairing guide →
