Lis Neris

Lis Neris sits in San Lorenzo Isontino, on the gravel plateau the Isonzo River carved between the Friulian hills and the Slovenian border. The Pecorari family has worked these vineyards since 1879. In the 1980s Alvaro Pecorari turned the cellar toward single-vineyard whites. That move put Friuli Isonzo DOC Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Friulano at the front of the range, alongside the Venezia Giulia IGT blends. Today the estate holds roughly seventy hectares of vines, close to a hundred football pitches. A solar-powered, gravity-fed cellar and a four-suite Wine Relais complete it.

About Lis Neris

San Lorenzo Isontino is a small village south-west of Gorizia. Its vineyards begin where the Collio hills slope down into the Isonzo valley. The estate's vines stretch from the right bank of the Isonzo north to the Slovenian border. They stand on a deep plateau of river stones that locals call claps. These are rounded pebbles laid down by Alpine meltwater, free-draining and warmed by the daytime sun. The Bora, the cold north-east wind of this corner of Friuli, sweeps the valley night after night through the growing season. It drops temperatures sharply, and that sharpens the aromas in the bunches.

The Pecorari family has farmed this land since 1879. The cellar as it stands today was reshaped by Alvaro Pecorari, who took over from his father in 1982. He led the renovation that made Lis Neris a fully gravity-fed winery by 1990. His daughter Federica now works alongside him, marking the fifth generation. In the 1980s the estate moved away from co-op-style bulk production and toward single-vineyard, single-variety bottlings. That shift placed Lis Neris in the small group of Friulian estates that defined modern Friuli Isonzo DOC white wine.

The premium line is built around four historic vineyards, each made and bottled on its own. Gris is the Pinot Grigio, Picol the Sauvignon Blanc, Jurosa the Chardonnay and La Vila the Friulano. All four carry Friuli Isonzo DOC and age in 500-litre French oak tonneaux. Above them sit the Venezia Giulia IGT blends. Lis joins Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay from the three vineyards. Confini sits beside it, and Tal Luc is the air-dried, Verduzzo-led sweet wine that has earned 94-point critic scores on top vintages. Dom Jurosa, a Chardonnay metodo classico in Brut and Extra Brut versions, completes the premium tier. The entry-level Tradizionali range covers Fiore di Campo, BBK, and single-grape Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Vineyard work is done by hand. Pruning, leaf removal, cluster thinning and harvest are all manual. The estate publishes its own sustainable-viticulture guidelines rather than holding a third-party certification. The cellar stands in the centre of San Lorenzo, designed to merge into the village skyline, and runs on solar power. Production averages around 400,000 bottles a year. These fall across four ranges: premium single-grape wines, premium blends, Caveau library reserves, and traditional steel-fermented bottlings.

Casa Lis Neris is the family's hospitality wing. The Wine Relais holds four suites, named Lavanda, Glicine, Rosa and Iris, carved out of a restored farm building. Around the garden and pool, a Foresteria adds classic rooms and long-stay apartments. Three named tastings run by appointment from the cellar door: Essentials with three wines, In-Depth with five, and the Wine Lovers Special with seven. The Pausa di Gusto adds a pairing of Cormons ham and Friulian cheeses. The same complex holds three meeting rooms and a private dining area. Wine professionals and small companies use it as a quiet base in the Isonzo valley.
