Tenute Gregu is a family estate at Calangianus, in the hills of Gallura in north-east Sardinia. Brothers Raffaele and Federico Gregu bought the land in 2011. They farm 30 hectares of vines, about 40 football pitches, at around 500 metres on crumbled granite. Vermentino di Gallura DOCG is the main wine, with Cannonau and three Premium bottlings beside it. Tastings are held on a terrace above one of the estate's lakes. The menu runs from a two-glass tasting to cooking classes, picnics and private dinners, all booked ahead.
Book a visitThe Gregu family made wine in Barbagia, in the centre of Sardinia, from the early 1900s. It was wine for the house, and for sale loose in the village and around. The family then left wine for a time, but not the land. In 2011 Raffaele and Federico Gregu, sons of Antioco, bought 50 hectares in the countryside of Calangianus, in Gallura, and started again. The business is registered in Raffaele's name. Marianna Pinna, his partner, runs the visits and hosts the tastings.
The estate sits at the foot of Monte Limbara, the granite mountain above Calangianus, at about 500 metres. Of the estate's 50 hectares, 30 are vines, in two blocks: one by the cellar and one higher up the hill. The soil is crumbled granite. Three small lakes on the property soften the climate, and cork oaks, wild olives and scrub surround the rows. The family limits sprays, keeps grass between the vines and leaves room for bees. Vermentino takes about 85 per cent of the vineyard. Cannonau, Carignano, Muristellu, Bovale, Merlot and Syrah share the rest.
Eight wines come out of the cellar, in two lines. The Classic line is where most of the bottles are. Rias is the Vermentino di Gallura DOCG from the youngest vines, fresh and easy. Selenu is the Superiore, from the oldest vines. It spends almost a year in steel on its lees, stirred now and then, and in 2020, 2021 and 2022 it took a share of grapes touched by noble rot. Sirè is a Cannonau rosé. Raighinas is a Cannonau raised in steel, and Animosu a Cannonau aged in used French barrels. The Premium line is three wines of about 3,500 bottles each. Cala Granis is a pure Carignano, a grape of the Sulcis in the south-west, grown here in the north. Greho's blends five red grapes, Cannonau, Carignano, Muristellu, Merlot and Syrah, in equal parts and spends 30 months in used French tonneaux. Pitraia is a Vermentino di Gallura Superiore made only from grapes shrivelled by noble rot. They are picked late from the oldest parcel, on a vein of pink granite, and only in the years that allow it.
Visits are the second half of the business, under the name Tenute Gregu Experience. Every package starts with a guided walk through the vines and the cellar. The tasting then moves to a wooden table on a terrace above one of the lakes, or among the barrels when the weather turns. Food comes as a board of local cured meats and cheeses, with small Sardinian dishes served as tapas. The 2026 menu has twelve options. There are tastings of two to five glasses, and two vertical tastings of four vintages of Rias or Selenu. There is a four-hour cooking class with the estate's chef, a five-course private dinner among the barrels, and a picnic in the vineyard with a basket and a bottle. There is even a wellness session, with a sound bath, a massage or yoga before two glasses of wine. Two of the tastings, Signature and Signature Plus, are also sold on Winedering. Everything is by reservation, the dress code is smart casual, and children are welcome.
Calangianus is inland from Olbia, the port and airport of north-east Sardinia. In summer the first visit starts at 11 and the last arrival is at 8 in the evening. In winter visits run from 10, with a last arrival at 4. The cellar shop opens from 10 to 1 and from 2 to 6. Parking is free and dogs are welcome.
