Azienda Agricola Ricci Curbastro

Ricci Curbastro is a family wine estate at Capriolo, on the western edge of Franciacorta and five kilometres from Lake Iseo. Riccardo Ricci Curbastro runs it with his sons Gualberto and Filippo, the eighteenth generation of a farming family. Its vines go into Franciacorta DOCG sparkling wines, including Museum Release bottles aged ten years or more before sale. The old farm buildings hold a museum of farming and wine tools. The cellar is open every day, with four guided visits to book and eight holiday flats opposite the winery.

About Azienda Agricola Ricci Curbastro

The Ricci Curbastro family has farmed for eighteen generations. Their records begin with Pietro Ricci Curbastro, born in Romagna in 1380 after the family was exiled from Florence. The family still runs an estate there, Rontana at Brisighella, and this one at Capriolo in Franciacorta. A company label from 1885 shows wine being made in the Colzano vineyard at Capriolo. Riccardo and Evelina Ricci Curbastro built the present cellar in 1946, and it is still the heart of today's cellar.

Gualberto Ricci Curbastro helped give Franciacorta its name as a wine. In 1967 he and ten other growers set up the Franciacorta DOC, eleven producers in all. His son Riccardo led the producers' consortium from 1993 to 1999, the years in which Franciacorta became a DOCG. Today Riccardo runs the estate with his sons Gualberto and Filippo. Riccardo and Filippo also make the wines with Annalisa Massetti and Andrea Rudelli.

The estate covers 34 hectares, 32 of them under vine, about 45 football pitches. The sparkling wines are Franciacorta DOCG made by metodo classico: Brut, Extra Brut, Satèn, Rosé, Demi Sec and the Gualberto, made with no added sugar. Each spends at least 30 months on the lees before it goes on sale. A few lots wait ten to twelve years and are sold as Museum Release. There are still wines too, under Curtefranca DOC and Sebino IGT. Two of them, the Curtefranca Rosso and the Sebino Pinot Bianco, are sold as organic wines.

The cellar is dug into the park on three levels, so grapes and wine move by gravity instead of pumps. The deepest floor is 15 metres down and stays at 15°C all year without cooling, holding hundreds of thousands of bottles. Three solar plants have made the estate self-sufficient in electricity since 2010. It was one of the first nine Italian wineries, and the first in Lombardy, to be certified sustainable under the Equalitas standard. It has published a sustainability report every year since 2017. In 2023 it became a benefit company, the first in Franciacorta, with a duty to society and the environment written into its statutes beside profit.

Visitors are welcome every day. The farm buildings house the Agricultural and Wine Museum, opened by Gualberto in 1986. It holds thousands of tools and objects from farm life of the past, a family archive going back six centuries and a library of more than 5,000 books. Four guided visits combine the museum, the cellar and a tasting of one to three Franciacorta wines. Eight holiday flats sit in the restored Cascina San Lorenzo opposite the winery, and a night there includes the museum and cellar visit with a tasting.
