Azienda Agricola Tre Monti

Emilia Romagna, Italy

Azienda Agricola Tre Monti farms 55 hectares of certified-organic vineyards across two adjoining estates in eastern Emilia-Romagna: one tucked into the cool Rio Sanguinario valley above Imola, the other crowning a Forli hillside that catches both the Apennine fohn and the Adriatic bora. Founded by Sergio Navacchia and his wife Thea in the early 1970s and now led by their sons David and Vittorio, the winery built its reputation on serious Romagna Albana DOCG and Romagna Sangiovese DOC, then pushed it further with skin-contact Albana aged in Georgian qvevri.

About Azienda Agricola Tre Monti

The winery's identity is the Navacchia family. Sergio and Thea began bottling in the early 1970s, when chasing quality in Romagna meant arguing with the prevailing wisdom that this was bulk-wine country. Today their sons David and Vittorio run the cellar and the estate, working alongside an eleven-strong team that, Tre Monti note, communicates in four languages including Romagnolo and Treviso dialect. The two estates are deliberately twinned and deliberately different. The Imola property sits in the Rio Sanguinario valley on the administrative line between Emilia and Romagna, a small cool dip that protects the vines through ripening. The Forli property is the opposite shape: an exposed ridge above the Ravenna plain that takes both the warm Apennine fohn and the salty Adriatic bora. Roughly twenty-six hectares each, fifty-five total. Every wine in the catalogue carries the Agricoltura Biologica Italiana certification. The range moves from frizzanti like Anabla to sulphite-free reds and whites in the SO2 Free line, to single-vineyard Sangiovese under Petrignone and Boldo, to a small set of skin-contact whites that includes Vitalba, a Romagna Albana DOCG matured in Georgian qvevri. Bottles ship to twenty-six markets. For most readers the entry point is Thea, the family flagship: a Romagna Sangiovese Superiore Riserva that Vinous reviewed favourably across recent vintages, and a white Rubicone IGP cuvee named for the same matriarch. Vitalba's Doctor Wine Faccino in 2025 confirmed the macerated Albana as the estate's most distinctive bottle. Either is a useful Romagnan reference if you have only met Sangiovese in its Tuscan dress. Visits and tastings are bookable directly on tremonti.it, with separate forms for parties of two to nine and groups of ten or more. The estate sits ten minutes from central Imola in the village of Bergullo, an easy detour for travellers passing between Bologna and the Adriatic riviera.
