Tasting Notes

Il Brecciarolo in the glass: Velenosi's Montepulciano and Sangiovese blend

Velenosi grows the grapes in its own vineyards around Offida and Ascoli Piceno, 200 to 300 metres up on clay and limestone. The wine ferments in steel, stays about 20 days on the skins and then rests in used oak barrels.

Fleshy red fruit, very fresh violets and a hint of spice, in Marianna Velenosi's own note. Drinkers mention oak and vanilla more than anything else, then plum, blackberry and cherry, so expect the used oak barrels to show from the first sniff.

Warm and full-bodied, with the cherry and dried-plum fruit the producer's sheet picks out. The 70% Montepulciano and 30% Sangiovese come from Velenosi's own vineyards 200 to 300 metres up on clay and limestone around Offida and Ascoli Piceno, and the wine stays balanced rather than heavy.

Lingering and warm, as the producer's sheet puts it, with a vanilla edge from barrels first used for the estate's Ludi and Roggio wines.

Overall

Drinkers rate it 3.7 out of 5 across almost 9,000 ratings, and the 2022 is the best-rated recent year at 4.0. Oak, black fruit and red fruit are the words they use most. A warm, dependable Marche red for grilled meat and baked pasta, best drunk young.

Where Il Brecciarolo fits best

Food and value are its strongest cards: a full-bodied red at £11.80 that handles grilled meat, roasts and baked pasta.

Best with food 8.5/10

Full body, warm fruit and a fresh Sangiovese share make Il Brecciarolo a safe match for grilled meat, roasts, baked pasta and hard cheese.

Best value 8.0/10

At £11.80 from the one shop on this page it sits in the cheaper half of the Rosso Piceno wines in stock on this site today. James Suckling scored the 2021 at 91 points.

Best intro to this style 7.5/10

Juicy red fruit, a vanilla edge and a warm, smooth taste make this an easy first Marche red. The blend reads as a step up from a plain Montepulciano.

Best everyday bottle 7.5/10

A warm, full-bodied red at £11.80 that suits weeknight pasta and a weekend roast alike.

Best for an occasion 5.0/10

Good for a relaxed dinner with friends rather than a gift. James Suckling's 91 points for the 2021 give it a talking point, but the 2024 is an everyday bottle.

Best for cellar 3.0/10

The 2024 has a drinking window to 2027 on this page. It is one to drink young rather than to lay down.

Scoring is rule-based and deterministic. The model and weightings are documented in our Wine Fit Score methodology.

The disciplinare, the place, the label

Rosso Piceno Superiore from Offida and Ascoli Piceno

Il Brecciarolo is 70% Montepulciano and 30% Sangiovese from vineyards Velenosi owns in the districts of Offida and Ascoli Piceno. It ages in barrels first used for the estate's Ludi and Roggio wines.

01

DOC, DOCG, IGT: what the badges mean

Italian wine law sorts bottles into a pyramid. DOCG sits at the top: tightly drawn boundaries, prescribed grapes, mandatory ageing, government tasting before release. DOC is the same idea with looser thresholds. IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) is broader still, requiring only that 85% of the grapes come from the named territory.

Rosso Piceno/Piceno is in the DOC tier. That is not a quality verdict, it is a description of how much freedom the producer has at vinification and ageing.

Food Pairing

Dishes for a warm, full-bodied Montepulciano blend

Il Brecciarolo's full body and warm red fruit suit grilled beef, lamb and baked pasta. Beef, veal, poultry and pasta are the food matches listed for it.

Tannin softening Strong match

Grilled beef and lamb

Montepulciano gives Il Brecciarolo a full body and a warm, lingering taste that meets the char and fat of grilled red meat. The meat softens the tannin, so the cherry and plum fruit come forward.

Try with: Fiorentina steak · Ribeye steak · Lamb chops · Leg of lamb · More pairings →

Fat cutting Strong match

Baked pasta and meat ragù

The Sangiovese share keeps this Rosso Piceno fresh enough to cut through béchamel, cheese and slow-cooked meat sauce. Its red fruit and violet scent sit well beside tomato.

Try with: Lasagna · Ragu alla bolognese · Agnello Ragu Lucano · More pairings →

Body matching Good match

Sunday roasts

A full-bodied Montepulciano blend has the weight for roast beef, lamb or pork with gravy. The vanilla edge from the used oak suits browned, roasted flavours.

Try with: Sunday Roast Beef · Roast Lamb with Mint Sauce · Roast pork · Roast Duck · More pairings →

Aromatic bridge Good match

Braised and stewed meats

Dried plum and sour cherry in Il Brecciarolo echo the deep flavours of a long braise. The warm, lingering palate matches the richness without overpowering the dish.

Try with: Beef stew · Brasato al Barolo · Venison Stew · Bollito dei Pastori

Salt balance Good match

Hard cheese and a pork pie

Salt in aged cheese and cured pork makes the fruit of this Rosso Piceno taste sweeter and its tannin softer. Its full body stands up to a strong cheddar or pecorino.

Try with: Cheese board · Strong cheddar cheese · Pecorino sardo e pan carasau · Melton Mowbray Pork Pie

Avoid Clash

Hot chilli and sweet-and-sour dishes

Chilli heat makes the tannin of this Montepulciano blend taste harsh and its 13.5% alcohol burn. Sweet glazes flatten its dry red fruit. Keep it for savoury food with little heat.

Skip with: Crispy chilli beef · Szechuan beef · Lamb bhuna · Sweet and sour pork · Pairing guide →

Drinking + cellar

Il Brecciarolo is for drinking, not keeping

Common Questions

It is 70% Montepulciano and 30% Sangiovese from vineyards Velenosi owns around Offida and Ascoli Piceno, 200 to 300 metres up on clay and limestone. The grapes are picked by hand in small crates, usually in mid-October.

It ferments in steel tanks and stays about 20 days on the skins. It then ages in small oak barrels first used for Velenosi's Ludi and Roggio wines, which gives it a vanilla edge without heavy new oak.

Warm, full-bodied and lingering, with juicy red fruit, fresh violets and a hint of spice. Drinkers most often mention oak and vanilla, then plum, blackberry and cherry, and rate it 3.7 out of 5 across almost 9,000 ratings.

Drink it between now and about 2027. It is a wine for its first three years, not one to cellar, and it shows best with food such as grilled meat, roasts or lasagne.

The one shop on this page sells the 2024 at £11.80, a cut price, so there is no price to compare here. Of that £11.80, about £5.07 is tax: £3.10 duty on a 13.5% wine and £1.97 VAT.

The producer's page lists 91 points from James Suckling and 88 points with a Best Buy tag from Wine Enthusiast for the 2021. That vintage is not on sale here now; the 2024 is.
