Tasting Notes

How Bertani's Tenuta Novare Valpolicella tastes

Bertani bottles this wine at Grezzana under the name of Tenuta Novare, its estate in the heart of Valpolicella Classica. The label says plain Valpolicella DOC, not Classico, and names no vineyard.

The 2025 is pale ruby. Red cherry and raspberry leaf come first, over a graphite note. Behind them sits the light touch of rose that young Valpolicella is known for.

Palate

Light to medium-bodied and juicy, with fine tannins, ripe red-berry fruit and white pepper spice. At 12% alcohol and with no oak flavour, it stays fresh and lifted.

Finish

It ends fresh, with the gently bitter twist of young Valpolicella. Nothing from oak blurs the fruit.

Overall

A simple, fresh Valpolicella DOC that Bertani bottles under its Tenuta Novare name. It is a wine for everyday meals, not for the cellar: serve it slightly chilled and drink it by the end of 2028.

The disciplinare, the place, the label

Bertani, Tenuta Novare and plain Valpolicella DOC

Bertani has made wine near Verona since 1857. From single vineyards on its Tenuta Novare estate it makes two wines, Le Miniere di Novare and Ognisanti di Novare.

01

DOC, DOCG, IGT: what the badges mean

Italian wine law sorts bottles into a pyramid. DOCG sits at the top: tightly drawn boundaries, prescribed grapes, mandatory ageing, government tasting before release. DOC is the same idea with looser thresholds. IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) is broader still, requiring only that 85% of the grapes come from the named territory.

Valpolicella is in the DOC tier. That is not a quality verdict, it is a description of how much freedom the producer has at vinification and ageing.

02

The denomination rules, in detail

  • Allowed grapes. 3 varieties listed in the disciplinare
  • Yield ceiling. 12.0 tonnes per hectare
  • Minimum ABV. 11.0% vol
  • Minimum ageing. No statutory minimum - producers release on their own schedule
  • Tasting panel. No mandatory pre-release tasting
03

Region and area context

  1. 01

UK duty and VAT on a 12% red

    Cost up

Of a £12.95 bottle, about £4.91 is tax: £2.76 duty at £30.62 per litre of pure alcohol for wine from 8.5% to 22%, and £2.16 VAT. At 12% alcohol, the duty is lower than on a stronger red.

Sold young: the 2025 is on sale about a year after its harvest

    Cost down

The 2025 is on sale in October 2026, about a year after the harvest. Plain Valpolicella has no ageing rule, unlike the Superiore, which must age for at least a year before sale.

  3. 03

    No oak influence

    Cost down

The wine shows no oak influence, so no new-oak cost sits in the bottle. The price pays for young Corvina fruit instead.

Perfect Pairings

Dishes that go with this wine

Food Pairing

What to eat with Tenuta Novare Valpolicella

At 12% alcohol, with fine tannins and fresh acidity, this Valpolicella suits tomato sauces, roast chicken and grilled steak. Keep it away from hot chilli.

Acidity matching Strong match

Tomato pasta and pizza

The fresh acidity of this light, Corvina-led Valpolicella meets the sharpness of tomato, so the sauce tastes bright, not flat. Fine tannins and 12% alcohol keep it from swamping a simple pizza.

Try with: Pizza Margherita · Ragu alla bolognese · Lasagna · More pairings →

Body matching Strong match

Roast chicken and pork

A light to medium-bodied red like this Valpolicella matches the weight of white meat without hiding it. Its red-cherry fruit sits well beside crisp skin and pan juices.

Try with: Roast chicken · Roast pork · Roast turkey · More pairings →

Tannin softening Good match

Grilled steak and barbecue

Salty, charred meat softens the fine tannins of this young Valpolicella, so the red-berry fruit comes forward. Serve it slightly chilled at a barbecue.

Try with: Steak · Ribeye steak · Sirloin steak · More pairings →

Aromatic bridge Good match

Mushroom and radicchio risotto

The cherry fruit and gently bitter edge of a young Valpolicella echo the slight bitterness of radicchio and the earthy taste of porcini. Its light body does not crush a creamy risotto.

Try with: Porcini mushroom risotto · Radicchio risotto · Pumpkin risotto · More pairings →

Avoid Clash

Hot curries and chilli

Chilli heat makes the tannin and alcohol in a red taste harsh, and it strips the fresh cherry fruit from a light Valpolicella like this one. Save it for milder food.

Skip with: Chicken madras · Chicken jalfrezi · Crispy chilli beef · Red Curry · Pairing guide →

Drinking + cellar

Tenuta Novare Valpolicella is for drinking, not keeping

The appellation's rules describe plain Valpolicella as a young wine, and this one has no oak influence and 12% alcohol. We would finish the 2025 by the end of 2028.

Drinking window
2026 → 2028

Best in the years above; holds without falling over either side.

Decanting
30 minutes

A short splash decant softens the first-pour edge and opens the aromatics.

Serving temperature
16-18°C

Aim for the cooler end on a warm day; warmer end opens up more aromatics.

Common Questions

It comes from Bertani. The back label says it was bottled at Grezzana, near Verona, by Cav. G.B.B., the Bertani company. Tenuta Novare is the name of Bertani's estate in the heart of Valpolicella Classica.

No, the label says plain Valpolicella DOC, not Classico, and it names no vineyard. Bertani's Tenuta Novare estate lies in the Classico zone, but the label does not say the grapes come from there.

Serve it slightly chilled, as you would a light red. It is light to medium-bodied, with 12% alcohol and no oak flavour.

Drink it from now to the end of 2028. It is a young Valpolicella DOC at 12% alcohol, with no oak influence.

One shop on this page sells the 2025, at £12.95 a bottle, so there is no price to compare here. Of that price, about £4.91 is UK duty and VAT.

Tomato pasta, pizza, roast chicken and grilled steak all work well. Its fresh acidity meets tomato, and its fine tannins soften beside salty, charred meat.
