Black plum and blackberry lead in Vivino's 1,599 written reviews of this wine, with 437 mentions, and oak, vanilla and chocolate follow close behind with 396. Cherry, leather and smoke come next. Pasqua's own sheet calls it a warm nose of red fruit and spice; Majestic tags it vanilla, black fruit and black plum. The vanilla comes from a year in small oak barrels.
Full and soft, with fruit ripe enough to taste almost sweet. Pasqua leaves the Primitivo grapes to over-ripen on the vine before picking, and Vinello's sheet lists a touch of residual sugar. The tannins are velvety rather than grippy and the alcohol is a warm 14%. Majestic's customers agree: 96% of 637 reviewers say they would buy it again.
Long and warm, with cocoa, liquorice and a little dried fig from the over-ripe grapes. The oak shows most here, as a vanilla edge that softens the fruit.
An easy, ripe Primitivo for the price: 4.0 from 10,595 Vivino ratings. Vintages since 2015 score 3.9 to 4.1, with 2017 Vivino's best-liked year. Drink the 2024 within about three years of release, with pizza, grilled meat or a mild curry. It is not a wine to cellar, and it is sold in the UK only by Majestic.
Where to buy Surani Costarossa in the UK: Majestic only
Majestic sells Costarossa as a UK exclusive at £16.50 a bottle, or £12 each in any mixed six, and lists the 2024 vintage with a natural cork. Vinello in Germany ships it for £10.58 a bottle before UK duty and VAT, which explains the gap.
How Surani Costarossa scores on the Italian Wine Fit Score
Four scores out of ten, from how well it suits a beginner to how well it suits a weeknight. Costarossa scores highest as an introduction to Primitivo and for food, and well for value at £12 in a mixed six.
Soft tannin, ripe plum fruit, vanilla and a touch of sweetness: the style most new red-wine drinkers like first. Majestic's 637 reviewers agree, 96% of them would buy it again.
Ripe, soft and full: a natural partner for barbecue, tomato pasta, pizza, aged cheese and mild spice. Too big and too sweet-fruited for fish, salads and sharp dishes.
£16.50 a bottle at Majestic, or £12 each in a mixed six, for a DOC Primitivo with a year in oak. Over 10,500 Vivino drinkers rate it 4.0. Vinello sells it from Germany at £10.58 before UK duty and VAT.
At £12 in a mixed six it is a weeknight red for pizza and pasta. At 14% alcohol it is a one-glass-with-dinner wine rather than a session bottle.
A DOC label and a natural cork give it enough polish for a casual dinner. A mass-market Majestic exclusive at £16.50 is not a gift or celebration wine.
Made from over-ripened grapes for early drinking, with a year in oak already done at the winery. Drink the 2024 by 2028; it will not improve in a cellar.
Scoring is rule-based and deterministic. The model and weightings are documented in our Wine Fit Score methodology.

Perfect Pairings
Dishes that go with this wine
Barbecue, pizza and aged cheese: what to eat with Surani Costarossa
A full, soft 14% Primitivo with ripe plum fruit and a touch of sweetness wants food with fat, char or tomato. Pasqua suggests tasty pasta, grilled meats and seasoned cheeses; Vivino's experts add beef, lamb and poultry.
Grilled and barbecued meats
Char and meat fat soften what little grip this Primitivo has, and its ripe plum fruit meets smoky, sticky barbecue flavours head on. Grilled meats are on Pasqua's own list of matches.
Try with: Ribeye steak · Sirloin steak · BBQ ribs · Pulled pork · More pairings →
Tomato-rich pasta and pizza
Tomato sauce needs a wine with enough ripe fruit to stand up to its sharpness, and this Costarossa has plenty. Its hint of sweetness also takes the edge off a spicy sausage or chilli pizza. Majestic calls it ideal with pasta dishes.
Try with: Ragu alla bolognese · Lasagna · Pizza Diavola · Pizza Margherita · More pairings →
Seasoned and aged cheeses
Salt in an aged cheese makes the plum and dried-fig fruit of an over-ripened Primitivo taste rounder and sweeter, and the soft tannin never clashes with the fat. Seasoned cheeses are on Pasqua's own list.
Try with: Caciocavallo farcito · Pecorino sardo e pan carasau · Frico · Cheese board · More pairings →
Mildly spiced lamb and tandoori dishes
The cinnamon, pepper and liquorice that Vivino drinkers find in this wine echo the spices in a tandoori marinade, and its jammy fruit cools mild heat. Keep to mild or medium dishes; a fierce chilli is on the avoid list below.
Try with: Tandoori lamb chops · Lamb seekh kebab · Lamb bhuna · Lamb Kebab · More pairings →
Slow-cooked lamb and beef
A full, warm 14% red with soft tannin matches the weight of a braise without fighting it, and the wine's vanilla note sits well with slow-cooked, caramelised meat juices. Vivino's experts list beef and lamb as its matches.
Try with: Lamb shank · Leg of lamb · Beef stew · Lamb chops · More pairings →
Raw fish, sour salads and fierce chilli
At 14% with oak and ripe, slightly sweet fruit, this wine turns raw fish metallic and makes a hot chilli burn hotter. Sharp, sour dishes make it taste flat and jammy. Save it for meat, pizza and cheese.
Skip with: Oysters · Sashimi · Green curry · Som Tam · Cheesecake · Pairing guide →
Keeping Surani Costarossa: drink it within three years
This is not a cellar wine. The grapes are over-ripened for early drinking and the wine has already had a year in oak and four months in bottle at Pasqua. Drink the 2024 by 2028 and store it on its side, away from heat: Majestic lists a natural cork.
Best in the years above; holds without falling over either side.
A short splash decant softens the first-pour edge and opens the aromatics.

Common Questions
Pasqua Vigneti e Cantine, the Verona wine house whose founding family came from Puglia. Surani is one of Pasqua's Puglia labels; its technical sheet says the grapes come from the company's own vineyards around the town of Manduria, on limestone and clay soils. In the UK the wine is a Majestic exclusive.
No. Masseria Surani is an estate at Manduria that has belonged to the Tommasi family of Verona for over a decade, and its Primitivo di Manduria is called Soranì. Costarossa is sold under Pasqua's Surani label. Both come from Manduria, but they are different wines from different companies.
Ripe black plum and blackberry, vanilla and chocolate from a year in small oak barrels, then cherry, leather and a little spice, with soft, velvety tannin at 14%. It tastes fuller and sweeter-fruited than most Italian reds because the grapes are left to over-ripen on the vine before picking.
No, but it is not bone dry either. Vinello lists it as semi-dry, with about 8 to 11 grams of sugar a litre, so it tastes ripe and rounded rather than sweet. That sugar is a normal result of the over-ripened grapes that give Primitivo di Manduria its style. It is nowhere near a dessert wine.
£16.50 a bottle at Majestic, which sells it exclusively in the UK, or £12 a bottle when you buy any six wines. Majestic lists the 2024 vintage. No other UK shop we track carries it.
Barbecued or grilled meat, tomato pasta and pizza, aged cheese and mildly spiced lamb. Pasqua suggests tasty pasta, grilled meats and seasoned cheeses; Vivino's experts add beef, lamb and poultry. Avoid raw fish, sour salads and fierce chilli.
