Tasting Tenuta Santodeno's Sangiovese Appassimento
Sangiovese at its most intense, in Tenuta Santodeno's own words, from an estate that has made wine in the Romagna hills since 1929.

Intense red in the glass, with a persistent scent rich in red fruit and blackberry jam. Delicate spicy notes run through it. The grapes dry slowly in small crates before winemaking, to concentrate their richness.
Full and concentrated, with soft tannins and a good balance between sweetness and body. The grapes come from the Romagna hills, on medium-textured soils, and the 2024 on sale has 13.5% alcohol.
A soft, persistent finish. Tenuta Santodeno calls the wine rich, soft and persistent.
By its own account, Tenuta Santodeno made one of the first Sangiovese in Emilia-Romagna from dried grapes, and this is that wine. Drink the 2024 by the end of 2027, with game, roasts or well-aged cheese, or on its own.

How Tenuta Santodeno's Appassimento scores
It scores highest as Best value and Best intro to this style, with Best with food close behind: a soft, ripe Romagna red at about £15.
At about £15 it costs less than most Romagna wines priced on this site, for a red made the slow way, from grapes dried in crates before winemaking.
Soft tannins and ripe, jammy fruit with a touch of sweetness make it easy to enjoy, even for someone new to Italian red.
Full and soft, with ripe fruit and a touch of sweetness, it suits game, roasts, meat ragù and aged cheese, the kind of dishes its maker names. Keep it away from hot chilli.
Easy to like and about £15, it suits a Sunday roast or a pasta night, though it costs more than a basic table red.
A rich, ripe Romagna red that feels generous at a dinner with friends, but it is not a prestige bottle for a big celebration.
A ripe, soft red to drink young. We would open the 2024 by the end of 2027 rather than keep it for years.
Scoring is rule-based and deterministic. The model and weightings are documented in our Wine Fit Score methodology.

Game, roasts and aged cheese with Santodeno's Appassimento
Tenuta Santodeno matches this Sangiovese with game, roast meat and well-aged cheeses, and calls it excellent on its own too, for slow sipping.
Venison, pheasant and roast duck
Game heads the producer's own list of dishes for this wine. The blackberry jam and spice of this Sangiovese meet the dark, rich flavour of the meat, and its full body stands up to a long-cooked sauce.
Try with: Venison Stew · Roast Pheasant · Roast Duck · More pairings →
Well-aged cheeses
Salt in a well-aged cheese makes the ripe, slightly sweet fruit of this Sangiovese taste rounder, and its soft tannins sit easily with the cheese. The producer names well-aged cheeses among its own matches.
Try with: Strong cheddar cheese · Pecorino sardo e pan carasau · Cheese board
Roast lamb and pork
Roast meat is on the producer's list too. A full, concentrated Sangiovese matches the weight of a roast, and its soft tannins suit pink lamb or a pork joint.
Try with: Leg of lamb · Rack of lamb · Roast pork · More pairings →
Slow-cooked meat ragù and lasagne
The meat in a slow ragù softens what tannin this Sangiovese has, so its fruit comes forward. Its full body matches a rich sauce on fresh pasta or baked in a lasagne.
Try with: Ragu alla bolognese · Lasagna · Agnello Ragu Lucano · More pairings →
Hot curries and chilli dishes
Strong chilli heat makes the alcohol in a 13.5% red feel hotter and flattens the blackberry fruit of this Sangiovese. Keep the chilli mild, or pour a chilled, off-dry white with the hottest dishes.
Skip with: Chicken madras · Chicken jalfrezi · Red Curry · Crispy chilli beef · Pairing guide →

Game, roast meat and well-aged cheeses are the producer's own matches, and it calls the wine excellent on its own too, for slow sipping. We would add a slow-cooked meat ragù on fresh pasta.
