Orange blossom and honey: how Dindarello tastes

Maculan dries hand-picked Moscato for a month at Breganze, ferments in steel and skips oak entirely. Tom Cannavan's 2026 note found spring-blossom freshness and chilled-grape sweetness; Vivino drinkers average 4.0 from roughly 3,900 ratings.

Orange blossom and acacia honey lead, the calling card of month-dried Moscato grown on Maculan's volcanic tufa slopes at Breganze. Tom Cannavan's July 2026 note logged fresh herbs and spring-blossom freshness, while Vivino drinkers keep returning to grape, honey and citrus.

Fully sweet at 110 g/l residual sugar yet light on its feet at around 11.5% alcohol. The month in the fruttaio is followed by a temperature-controlled steel fermentation and no oak at all, so the honeyed, chilled-grape flavours Cannavan described stay primary, with citrus acidity carrying the sugar.

Finish

Long, honeyed and floral rather than syrupy: the fresh acidity both Bernabei's sheet and the Vino.com panel single out stops 110 g/l of sugar reading heavy.

Overall

Dindarello is Maculan's drink-young passito: one month of drying and no botrytis, where the four-month-dried Torcolato and botrytised Acininobili sit above it for weight and age. With 91 points from Cannavan and a 4.0 Vivino average across roughly 3,900 ratings, critics and drinkers land on the same verdict: floral, genuinely fresh sweetness.

How Dindarello scores as an Italian dessert wine

The scores below weigh Dindarello as a beginner-friendly, pastry-flexible passito at a £16 half-bottle price, benchmarked against Veneto sweet-wine peers like Anselmi's I Capitelli.

Best intro to this style 8.8/10

Moscato passito at its most approachable: aromatic, unoaked, openly sweet at 11.5%, with no tannin and no botrytis funk to explain.

Best value 8.0/10

£16.00 buys the 91-point 2024 in half bottle; peer Veneto passiti such as Anselmi's I Capitelli trade around £23 the half at Italian retail (price_aggregate is empty, so this is an editorial benchmark).

Best with food 7.8/10

A sweet-course specialist: 110 g/l sugar and steel-fresh acidity cover fruit tarts, cream desserts and blue cheese, but it stays a dessert-course wine.

Best for an occasion 7.2/10

Panettone season, dinner-party desserts and gifting suit it, and twin 91-point reviews for 2024 and 2025 give it talking points beyond the price.

Scoring is rule-based and deterministic. The model and weightings are documented in our Wine Fit Score methodology.

The disciplinare, the place, the label

Veneto IGT from Breganze fruit: where Dindarello sits

Dindarello is labelled Veneto IGT rather than Breganze DOC, which leaves Maculan free to dry Moscato for a month in the fruttaio. The family has farmed Breganze's volcanic tufa hillsides since 1947, today about 40 hectares of terraced slopes.

01

DOC, DOCG, IGT: what the badges mean

Italian wine law sorts bottles into a pyramid. DOCG sits at the top: tightly drawn boundaries, prescribed grapes, mandatory ageing, government tasting before release. DOC is the same idea with looser thresholds. IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) is broader still, requiring only that 85% of the grapes come from the named territory.

Veneto is in the IGT tier. That is not a quality verdict, it is a description of how much freedom the producer has at vinification and ageing.

  2. 02

40 hectares of volcanic tufa hillside at Breganze

    Cost up

The family farms terraced slopes of volcanic tufa, about 70% of Breganze's vineyard land, hand-worked hillsides that cost more to farm than mechanised valley floors.

  3. 03

    Steel-only cellar: no oak programme

    Cost down

Per Tom Cannavan's note the wine sees no oak at all; that spares the year in one-third-new French barriques Maculan reserves for Torcolato, and keeps Dindarello the affordable sweet wine in the range.

  4. 04

Half-bottle format keeps the ticket at £16

    Cost down

The canonical 37.5cl format halves the fruit per bottle sold; UK shelf prices run £15.50 to £18, with our live listings at £16.00 and £17.38 (currently reduced to £13.90).

Perfect Pairings

Dishes that complement this wine

Food Pairing

What to eat with a Moscato passito from Breganze

Maculan's serving lead is pastry: fruit tarts, almond biscuits and cream desserts. With 110 g/l of sugar the dish must stay less sweet than the wine, and the acidity Cannavan praised keeps cream and even blue cheese in play.

Sweet balance Strong match

Fruit tarts and British baking

The first rule of dessert pairing is that the wine must be sweeter than the plate. At 110 g/l residual sugar Dindarello outruns frangipane and jam tarts, and the acidity Cannavan praised in the 2025 refreshes between bites.

Try with: Bakewell Tart · Treacle Tart · Trifle · More pairings →

Aromatic bridge Strong match

Panettone and almond pastry

Orange blossom and candied-citrus aromas in the wine mirror panettone's candied peel, while honey notes pick up almond biscuits. Maculan's own serving advice for Dindarello leans on dry pastry for exactly this bridge.

Try with: Panettone · almond biscotti · pandoro · More pairings →

Fat cutting Good match

Cream desserts and cheesecake

Steel fermentation with no oak keeps Dindarello's acidity bright, and that freshness slices through cream and mascarpone fat while sugar meets sugar. Bernabei's sheet points it at spoon desserts for the same reason.

Try with: Cheesecake · panna cotta · custard tart · More pairings →

Salt balance Good match

Blue cheese without the port weight

Salt and sweet is the classic cheese-course contrast, and at 11.5% alcohol Dindarello does it far lighter than fortified wine. The saline punch of a blue amplifies the wine's honey while the acidity scrubs the palate.

Try with: Blue cheese · Gorgonzola dolce · aged pecorino · More pairings →

Body matching Good match

Fresh fruit and light coconut desserts

Cannavan calls the 2025 fully sweet but quite light, and that low weight is the point: delicate fruit plates and coconut desserts are matched, not buried, while muscat-grape aromatics echo mango and melon.

Try with: Mango Sticky Rice · fresh fruit platter · coconut rice pudding · More pairings →

Avoid Clash

Dark chocolate and roast-coffee desserts

Bitter 70% cocoa and roasted espresso flavours crush a light, unoaked 11.5% Moscato: the orange-blossom delicacy vanishes and the sugar turns cloying against the bitterness. For chocolate, pour a Recioto della Valpolicella instead.

Skip with: dark chocolate torte · chocolate fondant · espresso desserts · Pairing guide →

Drinking + cellar

Keep Dindarello young; cellar Torcolato instead

Dindarello sees no oak and is released within a year of harvest: it is Maculan's freshest sweet wine, not an ager. The estate's four-month-dried, barrique-raised Torcolato is the cellar candidate; drink Dindarello inside three or four years.

Decanting
0

A short splash decant softens the first-pour edge and opens the aromatics.

Cellar potential
Low

Freshness is the asset: one month of drying, no oak and a Veneto IGT label with no ageing mandate. Maculan holds cellar ambitions for Torcolato; drink Dindarello within three or four years.

Common Questions

A sweet passito dessert wine from Breganze in the Veneto, made from 100% Moscato and labelled Veneto IGT. Maculan dries the grapes for about a month, ferments in steel and bottles without oak, keeping it light at around 11.5% alcohol.

Hand-picked Moscato dries for around a month in the fruttaio, concentrating sugar before a temperature-controlled steel fermentation and roughly three months' rest in bottle. Unlike Maculan's Torcolato there is no oak, and the grapes carry no botrytis.

Orange blossom, acacia honey, muscat grape and citrus, fully sweet at about 110 g/l residual sugar but fresh and light-bodied. Tom Cannavan rated the 2025 91 points, and Vivino drinkers average 4.0 across roughly 3,900 ratings.

Fruit tarts, almond pastries, panettone and cream desserts are the classic matches, and the salt-sweet contrast works with blue cheese. Keep the dish less sweet than the wine and serve chilled at 10-12C in a small glass.

Drunk young. It is built on freshness rather than concentration, so aim to drink within three or four years of the vintage; the 2024 and 2025 both sit in their ideal window now.

The canonical format is a 37.5cl half bottle, the size most UK retailers list between £15.50 and £18; Maculan also bottles a 75cl version. Our live listings start at £16.00.
