What Fattoria dei Barbi's Riserva tastes like
Barbi makes this wine only in years it rates worth decades, then gives it three years in oak casks. On Vivino, 335 drinker reviews centre on oak, tobacco, leather and cherry.

Black cherry, blackberry and ripe plum lead, with the liquorice and black pepper on the 2019's retail sheet. Barbi's own sheet adds undergrowth, spice and a cool edge of eucalyptus. Vivino drinkers add tobacco, leather and chocolate.
Full and warm, its closely woven tannin carried by the bright acidity Sangiovese holds on Barbi's marl slopes at 400 metres. Dark plum and blackberry run through a savoury middle. Three years in casks, small then large, round it out, and the oak shows: it is the note Vivino drinkers mention most.
Long and savoury, closing on liquorice, tobacco and the balsamic note critic Piero Pardini found in the 2019.
A Riserva the estate makes only in years it rates highly, and it shows. Vivino drinkers score it 4.3 across vintages, praising oak, leather and cherry depth. Drink the 2017 now; the five-star 2019 deserves years in the cellar.
Where to buy the 2017 and 2019 Riserva
Four UK-facing retailers list the Riserva between £77 and £134. The 2017 sits at £87.50 on Vino.com; the five-star 2019 starts at £109 in stock.
How the Barbi Riserva scores in practice
Six practical scores for this Riserva. It peaks as a cellar and occasion wine and scores lowest as an everyday pour at three-figure prices.
Brunello DOCG already demands years of ageing before release, and Barbi rates this wine's span at 20 to 80 years: built for the cellar.
Top Tuscan DOCG, riserva tier, a five-star 2019 vintage and 94-point scores: a statement bottle for milestone dinners.
Firm tannin and bright acidity built for fat, char and slow-cooked meat; the producer's own list runs roast, braise, game and aged cheese.
Around £109 buys the 94-point, five-star 2019, far less than Montalcino's cult riservas, but this is still a special-purchase price.
An austere, tannic Sangiovese that needs decanting, big glasses and patience; better as a third Brunello than a first.
A three-figure, special-occasion wine by price and by build; not a weeknight pour.
Scoring is rule-based and deterministic. The model and weightings are documented in our Wine Fit Score methodology.

2017 or 2019: which Barbi Riserva to buy
The Brunello consorzio rated 2019 five stars and 2017 four. The 2019 took 93 to 94 points from four major critics; the hot, dry 2017 drinks earlier.

A hot, dry season cut yields by a quarter, and older vines coped best. The wines came out riper and rounder than classic years: a four-star vintage drinking well now.

Perfect Pairings
Dishes that go with this wine
Dishes that stand up to a Brunello Riserva
The producer's own advice is roast or braised meat, game and mature cheeses. Woven tannin and focused acidity ask for fat, char and salt on the plate.
Thick steak and roast beef
Seared beef brings fat, char and salt, which smooth the Riserva's closely woven tannin and make its dark fruit taste sweeter. This is the classic Montalcino table: a bistecca and an austere Sangiovese.
Try with: Fiorentina steak · Ribeye steak · Sunday Roast Beef
Game and slow-cooked dark meat
A wine this full needs food with the same weight. Venison, beef stew and lamb shank carry deep savoury flavours that sit level with the Riserva's structure and echo its leather and tobacco notes.
Try with: Venison Stew · Beef stew · Lamb shank · More pairings →
Rich northern braises
Long braising turns beef and veal rich and sticky. Sangiovese's focused acidity lifts each bite so the plate stays fresh, which is why the producer itself points at braised meat.
Try with: Brasato al Barolo · Ossobuco alla Milanese · More pairings →
Mature pecorino and hard cheese
Aged cheese coats the mouth in fat and salt. The wine's acidity cuts through, and its tannin binds to the cheese protein and turns soft and fine. Mature cheese is on the producer's own pairing list.
Try with: Pecorino sardo e pan carasau · Aged pecorino · More pairings →
Earthy risottos and fungi
Porcini and truffle share the forest-floor tone drinkers keep finding in this wine on Vivino. Matching earth to earth lets the cherry and plum fruit stand out against the savoury rice.
Try with: Porcini mushroom risotto · Truffle risotto · More pairings →
Skip chilli heat and raw fish
Chilli makes 14.5% alcohol burn and tannin taste bitter, so hot dishes fight this wine. Delicate raw fish and oysters lose entirely under its weight and firm grip; pour a crisp white such as Vermentino instead and keep the Riserva for the roast.

Cellaring the Riserva: 20 years is a starting point
Fattoria dei Barbi puts the wine's span at 20 to 80 years. Keep bottles on their side at 12 to 14°C, and give young vintages an hour in a decanter before pouring.
Best in the years above; holds without falling over either side.
A short splash decant softens the first-pour edge and opens the aromatics.
Brunello DOCG already demands years of ageing before release, and Barbi rates this wine's span at 20 to 80 years: built for the cellar.

Common Questions
The Riserva is made only in vintages the estate judges capable of very long ageing, such as 2016, 2017 and 2019. It spends three years in oak casks and at least six months in bottle, and reaches the market six years after harvest.
Fattoria dei Barbi puts its ageing span at 20 to 80 years. For the 2019, retailer guidance suggests 15 to 25 years. Store bottles on their side at 12 to 14°C.
Yes. The Brunello growers' consortium rated 2019 five stars, and this Riserva took 94 points from James Suckling, Wine Spectator and Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, with 93 from Vinous.
UK-facing retailers currently list the 2019 between 77 and 134 pounds and the 2017 at about 87 pounds. Stock moves quickly at this level, so check each listing.
Open it an hour ahead or decant it, and serve at 18°C, the temperature the producer recommends. A large glass helps the aromas open.
The producer points at roast or braised meat, game and mature cheeses. Fatty, savoury dishes soften its firm tannin: think bistecca alla fiorentina or venison.
