Russiz Superiore is the Felluga family's top estate in the Collio hills of Friuli, in Italy's far north east. Marco Felluga bought the property in 1967. Vines have grown on these slopes for more than seven centuries. Today about 70 football pitches of hillside vines surround the cellar at Capriva del Friuli. White wines lead the range: Friulano, Pinot Bianco, Ribolla Gialla, Sauvignon Blanc and the Col Disore blend. The Rosso Riserva degli Orzoni heads the reds.
Marco Felluga bought Russiz Superiore in 1967, eleven years after founding his own winery in Gradisca d'Isonzo. He treated this hillside estate as the family cru. The land once belonged to the Torre Tasso princely family, who reached Friuli in 1273. Their eagle still appears on every label.
The Fellugas are now in their sixth generation of wine. The line begins with Michele Felluga, who worked Malvasia and Refosco vines in Istria in the late 1800s. Ilaria Felluga runs the estate today, along with the sister Marco Felluga winery. Her father Roberto set the direction on technique and sustainability, and the cellar still follows it. Since 2024 the company has a partner: Tommasi Family Estates, a family firm from Verona.
The estate covers one hundred hectares, about 140 football pitches, and half is planted with vines. Collio DOC whites lead the way. Friulano, Pinot Bianco, Ribolla Gialla, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio are each bottled on their own. Col Disore is the top white blend. The reds are Cabernet Franc, Merlot and the Rosso Riserva degli Orzoni. That wine ages in the Barricaia degli Orzoni, the old red-wine cellar visitors walk through on the estate tour.
The vineyards are certified under VIVA, the Italian environment ministry's scheme for sustainable farming. The work relies on integrated pest control, ozone treatments and natural fertilisers. Solar panels fitted in February 2021 let the winery run on its own power. The longer-term aim is production where nothing goes to waste.
Visitors can book three tastings at the cellar in Capriva del Friuli. The shortest is a one-hour walk with three wines. The longest runs two hours with five wines, two of them Riserve. Booking goes through marcofelluga.com. Guests can also stay overnight at the Relais Russiz Superiore, on the estate itself.
