Elena Fucci

Elena Fucci farms six hectares of old Aglianico vines, about eight football pitches, on the eastern slopes of Monte Vulture in Basilicata. The dormant volcano's soils of pozzolana, lava and lapilli shape the whole Aglianico del Vulture zone. The estate at Solagna del Titolo was founded in 2000 and sits at 600 metres above the village of Barile. It grows a single grape and makes a single wine, Titolo, now a benchmark for Aglianico del Vulture.

About Elena Fucci

Generoso Fucci bought the highest parcels of Solagna del Titolo in the 1960s, on the eastern flank of Monte Vulture. For three decades the family farmed the vines and sold the fruit to others. Elena's father Salvatore worked the rows after Generoso. The wine itself came later. By 2000 Elena Fucci's parents were close to retirement, and selling the land looked likely. Elena chose to keep it, and turned that harvest into a single bottling. She studied winemaking while she made her first vintage, and since 2004 she has made the wine herself.

Solagna del Titolo sits at 600 metres on the eastern slope of the volcano, which rises to 1,326 metres above the plain. The soils record its old eruptions, layer on layer: dark pozzolana, lapilli, lava and ash, mixed with clay. Vines planted by Elena's grandfather and great-grandfather are now 55 to 70 years old. The oldest parcel is close to seventy years of age. The site is high, and the climate is continental: cold for the south of Italy. Grapes hang on the vine longer here, and ferment in cooler weather, than they would on the plain below.

The farming stays simple. Favino, a cover crop, is sown on alternating rows to feed the soil with nitrogen. Vines are trained to short Guyot, alberello and the local capanno vulturino. The cellar avoids chemical additions, so the total sulphites in the wine stay under 2 mg per litre. The estate keeps to one grape and one wine on principle: Aglianico from these parcels needs no blending partner and no second label. Older vintages are labelled Aglianico del Vulture DOC, while recent bottlings carry the DOCG Superiore.

Titolo has grown into a small family of wines without losing its single-vineyard focus. Titolo Classico, the founding wine, spends 24 months in small French oak barrels of 200 litres each, then a further year in bottle. Titolo Superiore and Titolo Riserva age longer, three and five years, and draw on the oldest seventy-year-old parcel. A pink edition and a grappa complete the range from the same grape. Monica Larner at Robert Parker, Jancis Robinson, Antonio Galloni at Vinous and Gambero Rosso's Grand Cru d'Italia all place the cellar among the international references for southern Italian wine.

Visiting means arriving at a working farm that has stayed in one family for three generations. Guests taste on the same parcel where the grapes grow, with views across the Vulture vineyards to the volcano itself. Three set tastings can be booked directly with the estate. Each lasts two hours and costs from 30 to 45 euro per person. For a visit on the same day, phone or email the estate first.
