Azienda Vinicola Paternoster
Paternoster sits at Barile, on the volcanic slopes of Monte Vulture in northern Basilicata. The first bottle with the family name was filled in 1925, and three generations have built the estate around one grape and one wine: Aglianico, as Aglianico del Vulture. Pino Paternoster helped win that wine its DOC in 1971. Don Anselmo, the single-estate red named after the founder, has led the range since 2000. Since 2016 the winery has belonged to Tommasi Family Estates. Visits run from the wineshop on the working estate.

About Azienda Vinicola Paternoster
The first bottle with the Paternoster name was filled in 1925. Anselmo Paternoster, a winemaker from Barile, began selling his Aglianico in bottles instead of demijohns. His son Giuseppe, known as Pino, took over in 1945. Pino was the Vulture's first trained winemaker, and he championed its volcanic reds across Italy and abroad. In 1971 he was among the producers who pushed Aglianico del Vulture to DOC status. That step anchored the modern identity of southern Italy's most age-worthy red.
The estate covers about 28 football pitches of vines, between 450 and 643 metres up. They are scattered across the old Barile contrade of Rotondo, Macarico, Pian di Carro and Gelosia. The soil is a layer cake of volcanic tuff, laid down by the Vulture eruptions around 130,000 years ago. That black rock works like a sponge. It holds the winter rain and releases it slowly through the dry summer. Warm days and cold nights then give Aglianico the long, even ripening it needs.
In 2000 the family launched Don Anselmo, a single-estate cru named in honour of the founder. It quickly became one of the reference Aglianicos of the south, with Synthesi as the more approachable partner. The range now adds Bariliott, from younger Aglianico vines, and Vulcanico, a Falanghina Basilicata IGT white from the same volcanic soils. Assensi is the sparkling brut, and Barone Rotondo is the single-vineyard Aglianico del Vulture Superiore DOCG.
In 2016 Paternoster joined Tommasi Family Estates, the Veneto group behind Tommasi Viticoltori in Valpolicella. The group owns and runs the estate today, working alongside Fabio Mecca, the family's fourth-generation winemaker. Every parcel still ferments on its own, so the differences between Rotondo, Macarico and the other Barile sites can be read in the glass.
For visitors, Paternoster is the historic anchor of Aglianico del Vulture. The wineshop and cellar at Contrada Valle del Titolo are the easiest place in Barile to taste the whole range side by side. Pino Paternoster spent his career arguing that this corner of Basilicata belonged on the same map as Italy's other great red zones. Walk the volcanic vineyards and you see why.
