Tasting Notes

Pellegrino Nes 2024: candied orange, dried apricot and honey

Nes means miracle, in Hebrew by Pellegrino's account. It is made from Zibibbo grown on Pantelleria's low bush vines, with raisins added to the fermenting must several times. The wine then rests ten months in steel tanks and is bottled at 14.5%.

Amber in the glass, the 2024 opens on candied orange peel and dried apricot. Hints of Mediterranean herbs come through behind the fruit. Honey and raisin sit underneath.

Palate

Sweet and syrupy, yet never cloying: freshness balances the sugar. Marmalade, candied lemon peel and honey fill the mouth, with warmth from 14.5% alcohol. The 2024 grapes come from a drought year on Pantelleria and were picked healthy and well ripened.

Finish

Long and warm, with candied citrus and honey lingering after each sip. Before bottling it rests ten months in steel tanks, not wood.

Overall

Pellegrino's own page calls Nes 'the spearhead of the family production'. Drinkers rate it well across many vintages, picking out dried fruit, orange and honey, and the 2024 is ready to drink now.

Wine fit score

Where Pellegrino Nes scores best: occasions and food

Its strongest cards are Best for an occasion and Best with food. Nes is a Gold-medal sweet wine for the cheese board or the dessert course.

Best for an occasion 8.2/10

A Gold-medal Passito di Pantelleria for the cheese board or pudding at a dinner party, or a gift for someone who loves sweet wine.

Best with food 7.2/10

Very sweet and full, so it belongs at the end of a meal, with blue cheese, ricotta tarts or chocolate cake. Its freshness keeps those matches from cloying, but it is no partner for a main course.

Best intro to this style 6.6/10

Sweet, fruity and easy to like, with orange and apricot flavours anyone can pick out. The price and the very sweet style make it a treat to share more than a first bottle to learn from.

Best value 6.2/10

About £38 for 50 cl of a 2024 that won Gold with 96 points at the Decanter World Wine Awards. Not cheap, and the bottle is small, but fair for a sweet wine of that standing.

Best for cellar 3.8/10

Rested ten months in steel tanks and sold young, the 2024 is ready to drink now. There is no need to keep it before opening.

Best everyday bottle 2.5/10

A sweet wine for the end of a meal, at about £38 for 50 cl. It suits a dinner party or a gift better than an ordinary weeknight.

Scoring is rule-based and deterministic. The model and weightings are documented in our Wine Fit Score methodology.

Nes 2024: Gold and 96 points at the Decanter World Wine Awards

At the Decanter World Wine Awards 2026 the judges gave the 2024 Gold and 96 points. Their note lists 'orange blossom, marmalade, crystallised lemon rind and saffron honey'. Nes was first made in 1998, and the family's winery on the island dates from 1992.

01

DOC, DOCG, IGT: what the badges mean

Italian wine law sorts bottles into a pyramid. DOCG sits at the top: tightly drawn boundaries, prescribed grapes, mandatory ageing, government tasting before release. DOC is the same idea with looser thresholds. IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) is broader still, requiring only that 85% of the grapes come from the named territory.

Pantelleria is in the DOC tier. That is not a quality verdict, it is a description of how much freedom the producer has at vinification and ageing.

Hand-picked Zibibbo from low bush vines on small island terraces

    Cost up

Local growers pick the grapes by hand from Pantelleria's low bush vines, a way of farming on UNESCO's heritage list since 2014. They work bent low over small terraces walled with dry stone.

A short 2024 crop after the drought

    Cost up

Pantelleria was among the parts of Sicily worst hit by the 2024 drought, and the island's Zibibbo crop was estimated at about 40% below 2023. Less fruit to go round puts pressure on the price of the 2024.

    Cost down

Perfect Pairings

Dishes that go with this wine

Food Pairing

Blue cheese, ricotta tarts and Nes Passito di Pantelleria

Pellegrino pairs Nes with ricotta and chocolate desserts, such as Sicilian cassata or Sacher cake, and with blue or spicy cheeses. It is very sweet, so it can match a rich pudding without tasting thin.

Salt balance Strong match

Blue cheese, Stilton and sharp cheeses

The sweetness of Nes softens the salty, tangy bite of a blue cheese, the classic sweet-and-salty contrast. Pellegrino suggests blue and spicy cheeses with this Passito di Pantelleria, and a ripe Stilton works the same way.

Try with: Blue cheese · Stilton · Cheese board · Strong cheddar cheese

Sweet balance Strong match

Ricotta tarts, cheese pastries and custard

A pudding sweeter than its wine makes the wine taste thin. Nes is very sweet, so it holds up beside a ricotta tart or a cheesecake, and its freshness stops the pair from turning heavy. Ricotta desserts head Pellegrino's own list.

Try with: Pastiera napoletana · Seadas · Torta Della Nonna · Cheesecake · More pairings →

Aromatic bridge Good match

Panettone, Christmas pudding and honeyed pastries

The candied orange peel and dried apricot in Nes echo the candied peel and raisins in a festive cake, so wine and cake seem to share one flavour. With honey-soaked pastries, the wine's own honey notes do the same.

Try with: Panettone · Christmas Pudding · Cartellate

Body matching Good match

Chocolate cake and sticky puddings

A dense chocolate cake or a sticky toffee pudding needs a wine with real weight. Nes is full and syrupy, so it holds its own instead of tasting thin. Chocolate desserts such as Sacher cake are on Pellegrino's own list.

Try with: Chocolate cake · Sticky Toffee Pudding · Treacle Tart

Avoid Clash

Savoury main courses and sharp salads

Keep Nes for the cheese course or dessert. Beside a savoury main course its sugar swamps the food, and a salad in a sharp dressing makes this Passito di Pantelleria taste flat and cloying.

Skip with: Green salad · Grilled fish · Roast chicken · Tomato pasta · Pairing guide →

Common Questions

Nes is a sweet, amber passito with candied orange peel, dried apricot and honey, plus a hint of Mediterranean herbs. It is rich and syrupy but never cloying, because a fresh streak balances the sugar.

Pellegrino makes Nes from Zibibbo grown on Pantelleria and adds raisins to the fermenting must several times. Grapes for drying are picked from mid-August and left to dry naturally. Grapes for fresh juice follow from late August to mid-September, and the wine then rests ten months in steel tanks.

Ricotta desserts and blue cheese are the best matches. Pellegrino suggests ricotta or chocolate desserts, such as Sicilian cassata or Sacher cake, and blue or spicy cheeses. A ripe Stilton works for the same reason: its salty bite sets off the wine's sweetness.

Yes. The 2024 won Gold with 96 points at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2026. It comes from a drought year on Pantelleria: the crop was estimated at about 40% below 2023, but the grapes were healthy and well ripened.

Vino.com sells the 2024, at about £38 for a 50 cl bottle. It is the one shop on this page, so there is no price to compare here.

Serve it lightly chilled, at 12 to 14°C, as Pellegrino advises. The 2024 is ready to drink now, so there is no need to keep it first.
