Tasting Notes

What Oddero's Barolo actually tastes like

Oddero's own note lists truffle, liquorice and dried flowers. The 1,815 Vivino drinkers who described it put tar and leather at the top, then cherry. Both are talking about the same wine.

Oddero's own note names truffle, liquorice and dried flowers, and that is what people find. Vivino drinkers logged tar and leather 591 times across 1,815 written notes, ahead of every other smell. Antonio Galloni found crushed flowers and spice in the 2021. Give it an hour in a jug and the perfume opens right up.

Oddero describe the tannin as important and full, and it grips from the first sip. Under it sits sour cherry and raspberry, the note Vivino drinkers mention 439 times. Thirty months in big old casks rounds that grip off without leaving any oak flavour. Fat and slow-cooked meat soften it further.

Finish

The finish is long and dry, and the tannin still holds on at the end. Oddero keep the wine six months in bottle after the casks, which takes the hard edge off before it ever reaches a shop.

Overall

This is Oddero's house Barolo, blended from three plots rather than one famous hillside, so it costs far less than their single vineyard bottles. Drinkers score it 4.1 out of 5 across 8,965 Vivino ratings.

Wine fit score

How this Barolo scores against the way you will drink it

Six measures, weighted for this bottle. Strong on food and on keeping, weak for a Tuesday night, and good value for a Barolo at this price.

Best with food 9.2/10

Firm tannin and bright acidity cut fat and salt, which is why braised beef, game and hard cheese all work.

Best for an occasion 9.0/10

Barolo is Piedmont's headline red, and Oddero is an old La Morra name, so the bottle carries weight on a table.

Best for cellar 8.8/10

Held back 38 months by the rules, 30 of them in big casks here, with a drinking window of ten to fifteen years.

Best value 7.8/10

The current release starts near 49 pounds, against 68 pounds for the middle Barolo among the 489 on this site.

Best intro to this style 5.8/10

A famous name and an easy wine to find, but the tannin is drying and it needs food to show well.

Best everyday bottle 2.4/10

At about 49 pounds and needing an hour open and a plate of food, this is not a weeknight bottle.

Scoring is rule-based and deterministic. The model and weightings are documented in our Wine Fit Score methodology.

Vintages

Three vintages here: 2021, 2022 and a 1970

2021 had snow in January and a dry, sunny season, and the wines came out fresh and firm. 2022 was a drought year, picked up to twenty days early. The 1970 is 55 years old and needs drinking, not keeping.

2022 was a drought year in the Langhe, with almost no winter rain, and picking started up to twenty days early. The wines still came out fresh and rounder than 2017. James Suckling gave this one 94 points and Vinous 92.

Snow in January 2021 refilled the water in the ground, then the season stayed dry and finished sunny, so the grapes ripened slowly. An April frost cut the crop by about a tenth. Antonio Galloni called this Barolo fabulous, aromatic and inviting.

The Langhe vintage record calls 1970 a very good year: complete, velvety and splendidly balanced. This bottle is now 55 years old, so stand it up for a day, pour it gently and drink it soon.

The disciplinare, the place, the label

The Oddero family have bottled in La Morra since 1878

Giacomo Oddero rebuilt the estate in the 1950s. As the province's agriculture man he signed off many of the rulebooks that gave Langhe and Roero wines their DOC and DOCG status. His daughter Mariacristina runs it now, with Isabella and Pietro, the seventh generation.

01

DOC, DOCG, IGT: what the badges mean

Italian wine law sorts bottles into a pyramid. DOCG sits at the top: tightly drawn boundaries, prescribed grapes, mandatory ageing, government tasting before release. DOC is the same idea with looser thresholds. IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) is broader still, requiring only that 85% of the grapes come from the named territory.

Barolo is in the DOCG tier. That is not a quality verdict, it is a description of how much freedom the producer has at vinification and ageing.

02

The denomination rules, in detail

  • Allowed grapes. 1 varieties listed in the disciplinare
  • Yield ceiling. 8.0 tonnes per hectare

Three small plots, each made as its own wine
  1. 01

Three small plots, each made as its own wine

    Cost up

Bricco Chiesa and Capalot sit in La Morra, Bricco Fiasco in Castiglione Falletto. That is 5.2 hectares, about seven football pitches, and the oldest vines are 60. Oddero ferment and age each plot apart, then blend in spring. Three lots of work for one wine.

  2. 02

Only about 30,000 bottles a year

    Cost up

Oddero state production at around 30,000 bottles from those few plots. The plots cover about seven football pitches, and the wine then spends three years in cask and bottle before it is sold. Every cost of that is shared by just 30,000 bottles, so small runs do not get cheap.

  3. 03

Three and a half years before the first sale

    Cost up

Oddero give it 30 months in big Slavonian and Austrian casks, then six more months in bottle. The Barolo rules ask for 38 months in total. The cellar carries that cost for years before any money comes back.

  4. 04

Certified organic farming on all the Nebbiolo

    Cost up

Oddero dropped chemical weedkiller in 2008 and now clear the rows by machine. Every Nebbiolo, Barbera and Dolcetto vineyard is certified organic. That means more passes through the vines and more hands doing it.

  5. 05

UK duty and VAT on every bottle

    Cost up

At 14.5 per cent, UK duty from February 2026 is 3.33 pounds a bottle, and 20 per cent VAT sits on top. On a 49 pound bottle that is about 11.50 pounds gone before the shop earns a penny.

  6. 06

Priced below most Barolo on this site

    Cost down

Of the 489 Barolos here with a live offer, the middle one starts at 68 pounds. Oddero's current release opens near 49 pounds, which puts it in the cheapest third of the field.

Perfect Pairings

Dishes that go with this wine

Food Pairing

Barolo tannin, and the food that softens it

Oddero call the tannin important and full, and it is. Fat, salt and slow-cooked meat all take the edge off it. Vivino drinkers reach most often for beef, lamb, pasta and game.

Tannin softening Strong match

Beef braised for hours

Long braising leaves beef soft and slightly sweet, and firm tannin cuts across that so it never cloys. Barolo, a dry red from Piedmont, has exactly that grip. Brasato al Barolo exists because the match works.

Try with: Brasato al Barolo · Ossobuco alla Milanese · Bollito dei Pastori · Agnolotti del Plin · More pairings →

Fat cutting Strong match

Grilled steak and pink lamb

Fat coats your mouth and dulls the next bite. Nebbiolo, the firm dry red grape behind Barolo, strips it away, so the second mouthful tastes as good as the first. Rare beef and pink lamb need that more than a lean cut does.

Try with: Fiorentina steak · Ribeye steak · Rack of lamb · Lamb shank · More pairings →

Aromatic bridge Strong match

Truffle and mushrooms

White truffle grows in the same hills as these grapes. Barolo is a dry red with an earthy, tarry side, so it meets the truffle rather than fighting it. Mushrooms do the same job for far less money. Keep the sauce plain so the perfume gets through.

Try with: Tajarin al Tartufo · Truffle risotto · Porcini mushroom risotto · Agnolotti del Plin · More pairings →

Body matching Good match

Game birds and venison

Game has a strong, faintly iron taste that flattens a light red. Barolo is a firm dry red with the weight to stand up to it, and its dried-flower smell lifts the meat instead of burying it. Roast it plainly and let the wine do the work.

Try with: Venison Stew · Roast Pheasant · Roast Duck · Beef wellington · More pairings →

Salt balance Good match

Hard, salty cheese

Salt in an aged cheese makes tannin taste rounder, so a young Barolo, firm and dry, drinks better with cheese than most people expect. Castelmagno comes from the same corner of Piedmont as this wine. Parmigiano Reggiano and a mature Cheddar work the same way.

Try with: Cheese board · Castelmagno · Parmigiano Reggiano · mature Cheddar · More pairings →

Avoid Clash

Skip hot chilli and delicate fish

Chilli heat and firm tannin make each other worse, and the wine turns bitter and hot in your mouth. Plain white fish simply vanishes under it. Gavi, a crisp dry white from the same corner of Piedmont, handles both far better.

Drinking + cellar

Keeping Oddero Barolo rather than opening it

The rules hold every Barolo back for 38 months, 18 of them in oak. Oddero go further: 30 months in big casks, then six more in bottle. Shops put the drinking window at ten to fifteen years from the vintage.

Drinking window

Best in the years above; holds without falling over either side.

Decanting

A short splash decant softens the first-pour edge and opens the aromatics.

Serving temperature

Aim for the cooler end on a warm day; warmer end opens up more aromatics.

Common Questions

Dried rose, tar, cherry and liquorice, over firm drying tannin. Oddero's own note names truffle, liquorice and dried flowers. Vivino drinkers log tar and leather more than anything else, then cherry and raspberry. It is dry, not sweet, and it wants food.

Yes, after an hour in a decanter. No Barolo can be sold until 38 months after the harvest, so it arrives already softened. Shops put the drinking window at ten to fifteen years from the vintage, so a 2021 or 2022 will also keep.

Slow-braised beef, grilled steak, game and hard cheese. The tannin cuts through fat, so rich meat makes the wine taste smoother. Brasato al Barolo, beef braised in the wine itself, is the local answer. Truffle and mushroom dishes suit its earthy side.

It is blended from three plots rather than one famous hillside. Oddero also bottle single vineyard Barolos from Brunate, Villero and Vignarionda, and those cost far more. This one starts near 49 pounds, against 68 pounds for the middle Barolo on this site.

The Langhe vintage record calls 1970 a very good year, balanced and velvety. The bottle is now 55 years old, so buy it to open soon rather than to keep. Stand it upright for a day and pour gently off the sediment.

Yes, and shops selling it suggest a full hour. Air lets the dried flower and truffle perfume come out. Serve it at 16 to 18 degrees, cooler than a warm room. An older bottle needs a slower pour to leave its sediment behind.
