Nose

Musk, orange blossom, sage and honey rise straight from the glass. The scent is the Moscato grape itself, from organic hill vineyards around Alba and Asti.

Orange blossomOrange blossom
GrapeGrape
PeachPeach
PearPear
HoneyHoney
Palate

Sweet, light and softly fizzy, with honey and the taste of just-picked grapes. Fontanafredda stops the fermentation by chilling the wine at 5% alcohol, so much of the grape sugar stays. Fresh acidity keeps that sweetness in balance.

Finish

Honey and fresh grape linger for a while, with barely any bitterness at the end. At 5% alcohol, the next sip comes easily.

Overall

Le Fronde is the organic Moscato d'Asti in Fontanafredda's classic range, and it is ready a few weeks after the harvest. Drinkers rate it well and pick out peach, pear and honey most. Open the 2025 by the end of 2026, with fruit, light cakes or on its own.

Le Fronde Moscato d'Asti: the Italian Wine Fit Score

Le Fronde does best on Best intro to this style and Best value: it is sweet, light, only 5% alcohol and about £12.

Best intro to this style 8.8/10

Sweet, softly fizzy, fragrant and only 5% alcohol, Le Fronde is an easy first taste of Moscato d'Asti. There is nothing hard to like in it.

Best value 7.2/10

At about £12, Le Fronde sits a little below the middle of UK prices for Moscato d'Asti, and it is certified organic. Fair value rather than a bargain.

Best everyday bottle 6.0/10

Light, low in alcohol and about £12, it suits a weekend pudding or brunch more than a weeknight dinner, since it does not go with savoury food.

Best with food 5.8/10

Le Fronde is at its best with light cakes, fresh fruit and creamy puddings, or on its own before dinner. Its sweetness and 5% alcohol make it a poor match for savoury mains.

Best for an occasion 4.5/10

A cheerful bottle for a birthday cake, a summer party or the Christmas panettone. It comes from Fontanafredda's classic range, so it is not a showpiece.

Best for cellar 0.8/10

Fontanafredda says this wine should be drunk very young. Keeping it only fades the fresh grape scent that is the point of the bottle.

Scoring is rule-based and deterministic. The model and weightings are documented in our Wine Fit Score methodology.

The disciplinare, the place, the label

How Fontanafredda makes Le Fronde Moscato d'Asti

Le Fronde comes from organic vineyards on limestone-rich clay around Alba and Asti, 250 to 400 metres up. Fontanafredda stops the fermentation at 5% alcohol by chilling the wine to 0°C, which keeps the grape's sweetness.

01

DOC, DOCG, IGT: what the badges mean

Italian wine law sorts bottles into a pyramid. DOCG sits at the top: tightly drawn boundaries, prescribed grapes, mandatory ageing, government tasting before release. DOC is the same idea with looser thresholds. IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) is broader still, requiring only that 85% of the grapes come from the named territory.

Asti is in the DOCG tier. That is not a quality verdict, it is a description of how much freedom the producer has at vinification and ageing.

02

The denomination rules, in detail

  • Yield ceiling. 10.0 tonnes per hectare

Perfect Pairings

Food Pairing

Le Fronde Moscato d'Asti with cakes, fruit and creamy puddings

Fontanafredda suggests Le Fronde on its own or with fine, delicate sweets. Its sweetness meets the sugar in a dessert, and its light fizz and fresh acidity stop cream from feeling heavy.

Sweet balance Strong match

Light Italian cakes and biscuits

A dessert wine should be at least as sweet as the dessert. Moscato d'Asti Le Fronde has the honeyed sweetness to match a light cake, so the wine never tastes thin. Its soft fizz lifts a buttery crumb such as panettone.

Try with: Panettone · Torta Della Nonna · Baci di Dama · Strudel · More pairings →

Aromatic bridge Strong match

Fresh fruit, from peaches to strawberries

Moscato d'Asti smells of fresh grape and orange blossom, and that fruity scent links straight to ripe fruit. The sweetness and light fizz of Le Fronde make peaches and strawberries taste juicier.

Try with: Peaches and cream · Strawberries · Fruit salad · Eton Mess

Fat cutting Good match

Creamy puddings and custard

The fresh acidity and soft bubbles in Moscato d'Asti cut through cream and custard, so each spoonful feels lighter. The honey note in Le Fronde sits well with vanilla.

Try with: Trifle · Panna cotta · Zabaglione · Bread and Butter Pudding

Salt balance Good match

Salty bites before dinner

Salt makes a sweet wine taste fresher and fruitier. A cold glass of Moscato d'Asti Le Fronde with ham and melon or salted nuts makes a light start to the evening, and at 5% alcohol it stays gentle.

Try with: Prosciutto and melon · Salted almonds · Grissini · Gorgonzola dolce

Avoid Clash

Dark chocolate, coffee desserts and red meat

Bitter cocoa and roast coffee flatten the delicate grape scent of Moscato d'Asti. A pudding sweeter than the wine makes it taste thin, and at 5% alcohol it has too little body for red meat.

Skip with: Chocolate cake · Tiramisu · Sticky Toffee Pudding · Roast beef · Pairing guide →

Common Questions

It tastes sweet, light and softly fizzy, with honey and fresh grape. The nose brings musk, orange blossom, sage and honey. Fresh acidity keeps the sweetness from feeling heavy.

Le Fronde is a sweet wine with just 5% alcohol, under half the strength of most table wine. Fontanafredda stops the fermentation by chilling the wine at 5% alcohol, so much of the grape's natural sugar stays in the bottle.

Light cakes, fresh fruit and creamy puddings suit it best. Try it with panettone, peaches and cream or a trifle, or pour it on its own before dinner. Skip dark chocolate and coffee desserts, which flatten its grape scent.

No, they are two different wines. Le Fronde is the organic Moscato d'Asti in Fontanafredda's classic range, at 5% alcohol, made to drink young. Moncucco comes from the Moncucco site in Santo Stefano Belbo, has 5.5% alcohol and rests on its fine yeast for at least 10 months.

Drink the 2025 by the end of 2026. Fontanafredda says the wine is ready a few weeks after the harvest and should be drunk very young, so there is nothing to gain from keeping it.

About £12 a bottle. Two UK shops sell the 2025, both at about £12 for a 75 cl bottle, a little below the middle of UK prices for Moscato d'Asti.
