Tasting Notes

What La Roncaia's Ramandolo tastes like

La Roncaia dries its Verduzzo Friulano grapes for at least eight weeks, then ferments and matures the wine in small French oak barrels. The result is sweet and amber, and honey and caramel are the notes drinkers mention most.

Nose

Amber in the glass, with a very intense smell of chestnut honey and dried fruit. Caramel and orange peel come through as well. La Roncaia dries its Verduzzo Friulano grapes for at least eight weeks before pressing, which concentrates the sugar and the scents.

Palate

Sweet, full and velvety, with acidity and a light tannic grip keeping the sugar in balance. Few white grapes carry tannin in their skins, and Verduzzo is one of them. The wine ferments and matures in small French oak barrels for more than a year, with constant stirring.

Finish

The finish is extremely long. Honey and caramel, the notes drinkers mention most, stay right to the end.

Overall

Ready to drink now in both vintages here, with blue or long-aged cheese, or on its own after dinner. James Suckling scored the 2018 92 points, and drinkers rate the wine highly across many vintages.

Wine fit score

Where La Roncaia Ramandolo fits

Best with food and Best for an occasion are its strongest cards. La Roncaia pairs this Ramandolo with blue and aged cheeses, and a half bottle suits the end of a special dinner.

Best with food 8.5/10

Sweetness, acidity and a light tannic grip make it a strong match for blue cheese, aged cheese and foie gras. These are the pairings La Roncaia itself suggests.

Best for an occasion 8.2/10

A DOCG sweet wine in a half bottle, it suits the cheese course or the end of a dinner party. La Roncaia also calls it a wine to sip slowly on its own.

Best for cellar 7.2/10

Wine Advocate's window for the 2010 ran from 2014 to 2020, about ten years from harvest, and both vintages here still have years left.

Best value 5.8/10

About £24 for a half bottle of the 2021, or £34 for the 2018, is more than the average Ramandolo costs. The price pays for grapes dried for weeks and more than a year in French oak.

Best intro to this style 5.5/10

Honey and dried fruit make it easy to enjoy. But the light tannic grip is unusual in a white wine, so it suits a curious drinker more than a first-timer.

Best everyday bottle 2.2/10

At about £24 for the 2021 or £34 for the 2018, this half bottle is a treat. It belongs with the cheese course, not a weeknight supper.

Scoring is rule-based and deterministic. The model and weightings are documented in our Wine Fit Score methodology.

The disciplinare, the place, the label

Ramandolo DOCG: sweet Verduzzo from the slopes of Mount Bernadia

Ramandolo DOCG covers hillsides in Nimis and Tarcento, sheltered from cold north winds by Mount Bernadia. Its slopes are steeper than 30% and very often worked entirely by hand. It is the most northerly wine area in Friuli.

01

DOC, DOCG, IGT: what the badges mean

Italian wine law sorts bottles into a pyramid. DOCG sits at the top: tightly drawn boundaries, prescribed grapes, mandatory ageing, government tasting before release. DOC is the same idea with looser thresholds. IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) is broader still, requiring only that 85% of the grapes come from the named territory.

Ramandolo is in the DOCG tier. That is not a quality verdict, it is a description of how much freedom the producer has at vinification and ageing.

Main factor
Grapes dried for at least eight weeks before pressing
  1. 01

Grapes dried for at least eight weeks before pressing

    Cost up

Drying takes water out of the grapes to concentrate sugar and flavour, so each half bottle needs more fruit than a dry wine would. La Roncaia dries its Verduzzo Friulano for at least eight weeks.

  2. 02

More than a year in small French oak barrels

    Cost up

The wine ferments and matures in small French oak barrels, stirred constantly, for more than a year before bottling. Barrels and the long wait before sale both add to the cost.

  3. 03

Steep DOCG hillsides worked by hand

    Cost up

Ramandolo's slopes are steeper than 30% and very often have to be worked entirely by hand, harvest included. La Roncaia's grapes come from its own vineyards inside the DOCG.

  4. 04

Half bottles, so a high price per litre

    Cost up

Both offers on this page are 37.5 cl. Per litre, the 2021 works out at about £63 and the 2018 at about £91.

  5. 05

UK duty and VAT inside the price

    Cost up

At 12.5%, a 37.5 cl bottle pays about £1.44 in duty. Of the £23.60 for the 2021, about £5.37 is tax, duty plus VAT; of the £34 for the 2018, about £7.10.

  6. 06

An older vintage with a 92-point score

    Cost up

The 2018 costs about £10 more than the 2021 for the same half bottle. It is three years older, and James Suckling scored it 92 points.

Food Pairing

Blue cheese, aged cheese and foie gras with Ramandolo

La Roncaia suggests its Ramandolo with aged and blue cheeses, with foie gras, or on its own as a sipping wine. The sweetness meets salt and fat head on, and the acidity keeps each mouthful fresh.

Salt balance Strong match

Blue cheese and Stilton

Salty, tangy blue cheese makes the honeyed sweetness of this Ramandolo taste brighter, and the sweetness softens the cheese's bite. Blue cheese is one of the matches La Roncaia itself suggests for this Verduzzo Friulano sweet white.

Try with: Blue cheese · Stilton · Gorgonzola

Tannin softening Strong match

Long-aged hard cheeses

Ramandolo is a sweet white with a light tannic grip, and the fat and protein in a long-aged cheese smooth that grip away. Its sugar, in turn, rounds off the salt in the cheese.

Try with: Strong cheddar cheese · Pecorino sardo e pan carasau · Parmigiano Reggiano · Cheese board

Fat cutting Good match

Foie gras and smooth liver pâtés

Rich, fatty liver works best with a wine that brings both sweetness and acidity. The sweetness of this Ramandolo meets the richness head on, and its acidity clears the fat from your mouth. La Roncaia lists foie gras among its own matches.

Try with: Foie gras · Chicken liver pâté · Duck liver parfait

Aromatic bridge Good match

Strudel and nut pastries

The dried fruit and chestnut honey in this Verduzzo Friulano sweet wine echo the baked apple, raisins and nuts of a strudel. Choose a pastry that is less sweet than the wine, or the Ramandolo will taste thin.

Try with: Strudel · Strucolo · Torta Della Nonna · Bakewell Tart · More pairings →

Avoid Clash

Puddings sweeter than the wine

A pudding sweeter than the wine makes this sweet Ramandolo taste thin and sharp, and its honey and dried fruit disappear. Keep it for cheese, or for desserts that are only lightly sweet.

Skip with: Sticky Toffee Pudding · Chocolate cake · Baklava · Treacle Tart · Pairing guide →

Drinking + cellar

How long La Roncaia Ramandolo keeps

Wine Advocate gave the 2010 a drinking window of 2014 to 2020, four to ten years after the harvest. On that pattern the 2018 drinks well until about 2028 and the 2021 until about 2031.

Drinking window
2025 → 2031

Best in the years above; holds without falling over either side.

Cellar potential
High

Wine Advocate's window for the 2010 ran from 2014 to 2020, about ten years from harvest, and both vintages here still have years left.

Common Questions

It is a sweet amber wine with a very intense smell of chestnut honey and dried fruit, with caramel and orange peel too. The palate is full and velvety, and a light tannic grip keeps the sweetness in balance. The finish is extremely long.

Ramandolo is made only from Verduzzo Friulano, one of the very few white grapes with tannin in its skins. La Roncaia picks the grapes by hand and dries them for at least eight weeks before pressing, which concentrates the sugar.

Blue cheese, aged cheese and foie gras, the matches La Roncaia itself suggests. It also suits a strudel or a nut pastry that is less sweet than the wine, or a glass on its own after dinner.

Serve it at 12 to 13°C, the temperature La Roncaia recommends. That is cool, but warmer than a bottle straight from the fridge.

Two are on this page, both in 37.5 cl half bottles: the 2021 at about £24 and the 2018 at about £34. Each vintage has one shop here, so there is no price to compare for either.

The 2018 should drink well until about 2028 and the 2021 until about 2031. That follows the window Wine Advocate gave the 2010: 2014 to 2020, four to ten years after harvest.
