Tasting Notes

What Numero 20 tastes like

Nose

Redcurrant and blueberry over rose and violet, with a walnut, lightly balsamic edge behind the fruit. It smells perfumed rather than jammy for a 14.1% wine.

Palate

Full-bodied and silky yet firm: polished tannin, fresh acidity and ripe red fruit from the warm five-star 2020 summer. Pure Sangiovese, as every Brunello must be.

Finish

Savoury and long, closing on the walnut, balsamic note rather than sweetness. Freshness carries it.

Overall

An anonymised parcel from a serious organic estate, sold on quality instead of a name. Approachable now with a few hours in a decanter, and printed to live until September 2045.

Wine fit score

Who Numero 20 suits

A cellar-worthy occasion red for drinkers who care more about what is in the glass than what is on the label. The scores below break that down.

Best for cellar 9.0/10

A printed drink-by of 10 September 2045 and a five-star vintage: this is built to keep.

Best with food 8.8/10

Acidity and tannin built for the table: beef, game, aged cheese and mushroom dishes all fit.

Best for an occasion 7.8/10

Five-star Brunello quality for a milestone dinner, though the anonymous label makes it a quieter gift than a famous name.

Best intro to this style 3.5/10

Full-bodied, firm and 14.1%, and it wants a decanter: better as a step up than a first Italian red.

Best everyday bottle 0.8/10

A £70 occasion red, not a weeknight pour.

Scoring is rule-based and deterministic. The model and weightings are documented in our Wine Fit Score methodology.

The disciplinare, the place, the label

Brunello rules protect you, even with no name

Whoever bottled it, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG means pure Sangiovese grown around Montalcino, held back more than four years and passed by a tasting panel before release.

01

DOC, DOCG, IGT: what the badges mean

Italian wine law sorts bottles into a pyramid. DOCG sits at the top: tightly drawn boundaries, prescribed grapes, mandatory ageing, government tasting before release. DOC is the same idea with looser thresholds. IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) is broader still, requiring only that 85% of the grapes come from the named territory.

Brunello di Montalcino is in the DOCG tier. That is not a quality verdict, it is a description of how much freedom the producer has at vinification and ageing.

Food Pairing

What to eat with a full-bodied Brunello

Treat it as top-table Tuscan: bistecca alla fiorentina, slow braises, game and aged pecorino. Firm, polished tannin and fresh acidity want protein and fat on the plate.

Acidity matching Strong match

Bistecca and chargrilled beef

Brunello's fresh acidity and firm tannin were made for rare beef. The fat softens the grip, and the char echoes this wine's savoury, balsamic edge.

Try with: Fiorentina steak · Ribeye steak · Sunday Roast Beef

Tannin softening Strong match

Slow braises and game

Polished but firm tannin turns silky against long-cooked meat, and the walnut, savoury side of the wine sits naturally with pan juices and game.

Try with: Venison Stew · Beef stew · Lamb shank · More pairings →

Fat cutting Good match

Aged pecorino and hard cheeses

Salty aged cheese meets the fresh acidity, which rinses the fat and lets the redcurrant fruit come back through.

Try with: Pecorino sardo e pan carasau · Cheese board

Body matching Good match

Porcini and earthy autumn plates

A full-bodied Sangiovese with a walnut, forest edge meets mushrooms note for note; no meat needed on the plate.

Try with: Porcini mushroom risotto · Beef wellington

Avoid Clash

Hot chilli and delicate fish

Chilli heat makes 14.1% alcohol burn and firm tannin taste harsh, and light seafood vanishes under this much body.

Skip with: Vindaloo · Szechuan beef · Sushi · Oysters · Pairing guide →

Drinking + cellar

A 2045 drink-by date on a £70 bottle

The merchant prints 10 September 2045 on the sheet: a twenty-year runway. A five-star Brunello with this structure rewards a cool, dark cupboard even without a famous name.

Drinking window
2026 → 2045

Best in the years above; holds without falling over either side.

Decanting
1 hour

A short splash decant softens the first-pour edge and opens the aromatics.

Serving temperature
16-18°C

Aim for the cooler end on a warm day; warmer end opens up more aromatics.

Cellar potential
High

A printed drink-by of 10 September 2045 and a five-star vintage: this is built to keep.

Common Questions

It is what the trade calls a cleanskin: a real estate's wine sold with almost nothing on the label. The estate keeps its name off the bottle, and in exchange the merchant sells a five-star Brunello for less than the open-label price.

It is not disclosed. Laithwaites gives only clues. The estate sits in Castelnuovo Berardenga, in the south of Chianti Classico, with buildings dating to 1099. Its current owners bought it in 1984, farm it 100% organically on solar power, and their named wines have scored a perfect 100.

Yes. Brunello di Montalcino DOCG can only be Sangiovese grown around Montalcino, held back more than four years and passed by a tasting panel before release. A blank label does not change any of those rules.

Both work. 2020 was a five-star year and this is ripe and surprisingly approachable, so it drinks now after a few hours in a decanter. The printed drink-by date is 10 September 2045, so there is no hurry.

The missing name is the discount. The merchant says the estate's own-label wines regularly earn top scores, including a perfect 100, and open-label Brunello at that level sells well above £70. Anonymity is the whole deal.
