What Selvarossa dei Confratelli tastes like: Negroamaro with nine months in oak
Ripe fruit and spice with an elegant, deep structure, in Due Palme's own words: velvety, ripe fruit loaded with spicy oak. The notes below say what we find in the glass.

Ripe fruit and spice first, the notes Due Palme itself picks out. Dates, red fruit and balsamic notes follow, with cherries, vanilla and liquorice in the glass. Plum, blackberry and blueberry lead the fruit, then oak, vanilla and tobacco, then cherry and red fruit.
Full-bodied, warm and velvety. Negroamaro, 'niuru maru' in Salento dialect for its dark colour and firm tannin, gives the structure; Malvasia Nera softens it. A portion of the grapes are air-dried, as for Amarone, which explains the ripe, almost jammy fruit. The wine spends nine months in French oak barrels.
Long, with spicy oak, liquorice and a date-like sweetness of fruit. The tannins are vigorous but well behaved: velvety, ripe fruit loaded with spicy oak.
Angelo Maci created Selvarossa in 1989 as the flagship of his Due Palme cooperative, which now takes grapes from over 1,000 Salento growers. Gambero Rosso gave the Riserva Tre Bicchieri in 2021 and 2022; with drinkers it is a well-liked red rather than a favourite. Drink the 2022 from now to 2031 with roast beef, ragu or aged cheese.
Where to buy Selvarossa dei Confratelli in the UK, and what to pay
Laithwaites is the only UK shop we track with it: £24 a bottle for the 2022, with delivery free on 12 bottles or more and £7.99 otherwise. Its Vineyard Partners pay £16 a bottle for an annual case of six or twelve, currently the 2021.
How Selvarossa dei Confratelli scores on the Italian Wine Fit Score
Four scores out of ten. Selvarossa dei Confratelli rates highest for food and as an introduction to Salento reds, then for value at £24 and for an occasion, with Tre Bicchieri behind it.
Full, ripe and oaky with Negroamaro's firm tannin: built for roast beef, ragu, lamb and aged cheese. Too big and too spicy for fish, salads and hot dishes.
Velvety tannin, ripe fruit and sweet oak make it an easy first Salento red. The firm Negroamaro grip is the only thing a beginner will notice.
At £24 a bottle at Laithwaites, a Tre Bicchieri flagship Riserva is fair, and Laithwaites' Vineyard Partners pay £16 a bottle by the case, currently the 2021.
A Riserva label, Tre Bicchieri from Gambero Rosso in 2021 and 2022 and a winery named Italian Winery of the Year five times. Good for a dinner party; not a grand gift.
At £24 a bottle and full-bodied with spicy oak, this is a Sunday-lunch red rather than a Tuesday bottle, though partners pay £16.
Already a Riserva with nine months in oak when it reaches you. The 2022 has a drink-by date of January 2031; it will soften, not improve much.
Scoring is rule-based and deterministic. The model and weightings are documented in our Wine Fit Score methodology.

Perfect Pairings
Dishes that go with this wine
Roast beef, ragu and aged cheese: what to eat with Selvarossa dei Confratelli
A full-bodied, velvety Salento red with firm Negroamaro tannin and spicy oak wants fat, slow-cooked sauces or salty cheese. Roast beef, hearty ragu and aged cheeses come first; lamb and pasta work too.
Roast beef and steak
Beef fat and juices soften Negroamaro's firm tannin, and the wine's ripe, oaky fruit stands up to a big roast. Roast beef is the first thing to reach for.
Try with: Sunday Roast Beef · Fiorentina steak · Steak and Kidney Pie · Beef wellington · More pairings →
Hearty meat sauces and pasta
A long-cooked ragu is rich and slightly sweet, and this Riserva has the ripe fruit and warmth to match it without turning sharp. Hearty ragu, savoury first courses and pasta all belong here.
Try with: Ragu alla bolognese · Lasagna · Agnello Ragu Lucano · Cotoletta alla bolognese · More pairings →
Aged cheeses
Salt in an aged cheese makes the date and cherry fruit of this Riserva taste sweeter and rounder, and the velvety tannin never clashes with the fat. Aged cheeses are a standard match for it.
Try with: Strong cheddar cheese · Cheese board · Pecorino sardo e pan carasau · Caciocavallo farcito
Lamb, roasted or slow-cooked
Negroamaro keeps enough acidity to cut through lamb fat, and the wine's spicy oak sits well with rosemary and garlic. Lamb belongs on its list.
Try with: Lamb shank · Leg of lamb · Rack of lamb · Roast Lamb with Mint Sauce · More pairings →
Grilled meat and barbecue
Char and smoke meet the toasty oak in this full-bodied Salento red, and its ripe fruit handles sticky barbecue sauces. Grilled meat sits squarely in its range.
Try with: BBQ ribs · Pulled pork · Sirloin steak · Lamb chops · More pairings →
Raw fish, sour salads and fierce chilli
Firm Negroamaro tannin and spicy oak turn raw fish metallic and make hot chilli burn hotter, and a sharp, sour dish makes the wine taste flat and jammy. Keep it for meat, pasta and cheese.
Skip with: Oysters · Sashimi · Green curry · Som Tam · Cheesecake · Pairing guide →
Keeping Selvarossa dei Confratelli: drink by 2031
This Riserva arrives with its nine months of oak already done. The 2022 has a drink-by date of 31 January 2031; store it on its side away from heat and open it well before then.
Best in the years above; holds without falling over either side.
A short splash decant softens the first-pour edge and opens the aromatics.
Aim for the cooler end on a warm day; warmer end opens up more aromatics.

It reserves the case for Due Palme's growers and its own Vineyard Partners. Due Palme's own site carries the flagship only as Selvarossa Riserva, which won Gambero Rosso's Tre Bicchieri in 2021 and 2022.
