Tasting Notes

What San Moro Primitivo di Manduria Riserva 2023 tastes like

Black fruit leads: blackberry, plum and blackcurrant from Primitivo grown around Manduria by the cooperative's member growers. The wood ageing a Riserva must have shows as a touch of vanilla, not as a plank. At 14.5% it is a full-bodied red, soft rather than sharp, built for a plate of meat.

Blackberry and plum first, with blackcurrant behind them: the black fruit that drinkers who rate this wine mention more than anything else. A touch of vanilla and chocolate from the wood ageing a Riserva must have, then black pepper and a little leather. It smells ripe and warm, as a 14.5% red from Manduria should.

Palate

Full-bodied and soft. Two years of ageing, at least nine months of it in wood, have rounded the ripe Primitivo tannin. The wine fills the mouth without a hard edge. Acidity is moderate, just enough to keep the fruit fresh. The alcohol is 14.5%, and you feel it as warmth rather than heat.

Finish

Medium length, on plum and a dusting of black pepper. The light oak leaves a little chocolate at the end, and the ripeness lingers.

Overall

A Riserva made by the Manduria cooperative Produttori di Manduria under its San Moro label, sold at an everyday price. Drinkers rate it well and keep returning to the same words: black fruit, a little oak, spice. Open it between 2026 and 2029 with lamb or a slow meat sauce.

Wine fit score

Where San Moro Riserva fits: value and easy drinking

The Value and Beginner cards are its strongest. The price sits at the cheap end of the Primitivo di Manduria Riserva on this site. The ripe, soft, full-bodied style needs no explaining to someone new to Italian reds.

Best value 8.5/10

The one shop on this page asks £13.95. That is the cheap end of the Primitivo di Manduria Riserva on this site, for a wine with two years of ageing behind it.

Best intro to this style 8.2/10

Ripe black fruit, soft tannin and a light touch of oak: the classic, easy Primitivo style, at a price that costs little to try.

Best with food 7.2/10

Full-bodied, with soft tannin and moderate acidity. It suits lamb, barbecue and meat sauces well. It lacks the bright acidity that lets a red cross over to lighter dishes.

Best everyday bottle 6.0/10

Priced for a weeknight. But 14.5% alcohol and a full body make it a wine for a plate of meat, not a glass on its own.

Best for cellar 5.0/10

The Riserva ageing was done at the winery, so the wine is ready now. It will hold to 2029 but is not built to improve for a decade.

Best for an occasion 4.5/10

A Riserva label and a natural cork give it some sense of occasion. Yet it is a cooperative wine at an everyday price, not a bottle for a big night.

Scoring is rule-based and deterministic. The model and weightings are documented in our Wine Fit Score methodology.

The 2023 vintage of San Moro Riserva, on sale since spring 2026

A Riserva from 2023 could not be sold before 31 March 2026. The rules ask for two years of ageing from 1 November of the harvest year, with at least nine months in wood. So the 2023 reached the shop with its cellar work already done. We would drink it between 2026 and 2029.

A wet spring in 2023 brought downy mildew to many vineyards across southern Italy, and growers expected a much smaller crop in Puglia. After two years of ageing, at least nine months of it in wood, the Riserva could be sold from 31 March 2026. Drink it between 2026 and 2029.

The disciplinare, the place, the label

Produttori di Manduria, a growers' cooperative since 1932

A group of Manduria growers formed a wine federation in 1928 and turned it into a cooperative on 9 July 1932. Today its members farm more than 700 hectares of vines, by the cooperative's own account, and more than half of that is Primitivo. The older plots are mostly bush vines. San Moro is a label it does not list at home, where its Riserva wines are called Sonetto and Elegia.

01

DOC, DOCG, IGT: what the badges mean

Italian wine law sorts bottles into a pyramid. DOCG sits at the top: tightly drawn boundaries, prescribed grapes, mandatory ageing, government tasting before release. DOC is the same idea with looser thresholds. IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) is broader still, requiring only that 85% of the grapes come from the named territory.

Primitivo di Manduria is in the DOC tier. That is not a quality verdict, it is a description of how much freedom the producer has at vinification and ageing.

4 up / 1 down
Main factor
UK duty and VAT on a 14.5% bottle

Riserva rules: two years of ageing, at least nine months in wood

    Cost up

The 2023 could not be sold before 31 March 2026. The cooperative carried the wine, the casks and the cellar space for two years before a penny came back. That waiting time is a large part of why a Riserva costs more than a plain Primitivo di Manduria.

  2. 02

UK duty and VAT on a 14.5% bottle

    Cost up

Duty on a 75 cl bottle at 14.5% is £3.33, at the rate of £30.62 per litre of pure alcohol since 1 February 2026. VAT is a sixth of the price, £2.33. So about £5.66 of the £13.95 is tax before anyone has paid for the wine.

  3. 03

A yield cap of 9 tonnes a hectare, first-crop bunches only, no added sugar

    Cost up

The rules cap the crop at 9 tonnes a hectare for the Riserva and allow only the first set of bunches. Adding sugar or must to lift the strength is forbidden. The 14.5% comes from ripe grapes alone, and the cap limits how many bottles each hectare gives.

  4. 04

Natural cork, which the Riserva rules require in place of a screwcap

    Cost up

A Primitivo di Manduria Riserva may not be sealed with a screwcap, so this wine carries the cost of a natural cork that a cheaper Puglia Primitivo can avoid.

  5. 05

Cooperative scale: more than 700 hectares of member vineyards

    Cost down

Produttori di Manduria's members farm more than 700 hectares of vines, by its own account, more than half of it Primitivo. A label like San Moro draws on that large pool, not on one small estate. That scale is a big part of why a two-year Riserva can sell at £13.95.

01

Riserva rules: two years of ageing, at least nine months in wood

The 2023 could not be sold before 31 March 2026. The cooperative carried the wine, the casks and the cellar space for two years before a penny came back. That waiting time is a large part of why a Riserva costs more than a plain Primitivo di Manduria.

Food Pairing

Dishes that suit a 14.5% Primitivo di Manduria Riserva

Ripe tannin, black fruit and 14.5% alcohol want fat and protein. Lamb off the grill, pulled pork and a long-cooked meat sauce all give the San Moro Riserva something to grip. Chilli heat and delicate fish are the two things to keep away from it. The alcohol makes a burn worse, and the weight flattens a light fish.

Tannin softening Strong match

Lamb off the grill or out of the oven

The fat and protein in lamb soften the ripe tannin of this Primitivo, so the wine tastes rounder and fruitier beside the meat. At 14.5% it has the weight to stand up to a chop or a shank. A full-bodied red like Primitivo di Manduria Riserva is made for lamb.

Try with: Lamb chops · Lamb shank · Leg of lamb · Rack of lamb · More pairings →

Body matching Strong match

Barbecue, ribs and slow-cooked pork

Smoke and sweet, sticky glazes need a wine with as much weight and ripeness, or the food flattens it. The blackberry and plum in this San Moro Riserva meet the sweetness head on. The soft tannin does not fight the char. A ripe, full-bodied Primitivo is the Italian red to open at a barbecue.

Try with: BBQ ribs · Pulled pork · Beef stew · Pork belly · More pairings →

Aromatic bridge Good match

Slow meat sauces and baked pasta

A long-cooked meat sauce turns sweet and savoury at once. The black fruit and pepper in this wine pick up both. The alcohol carries the richness of a lasagne without tasting heavy. Primitivo di Manduria, a full-bodied southern red, does here what a Chianti does with a lighter ragu.

Try with: Ragu alla bolognese · Lasagna · Brasato al Barolo · Agnello Ragu Lucano · More pairings →

Fat cutting Good match

Sunday roasts and meat pies

Roast beef fat and buttery pastry coat the mouth. The tannin and moderate acidity in this Riserva scrub it clean between bites. The ripe fruit sits well with gravy. Think of Primitivo di Manduria as a bold, soft Italian red for a British Sunday table.

Try with: Sunday Roast Beef · Shepherd's Pie · Steak and Kidney Pie · Beef wellington · More pairings →

Salt balance Good match

Aged hard cheeses

Salt in an aged cheese makes the fruit in this wine taste sweeter and takes the edge off its 14.5% warmth. The chocolate note from the oak is a natural fit for a nutty, crumbly cheese. A ripe Primitivo di Manduria is the southern Italian red for the cheese board.

Try with: Caciocavallo farcito · Pecorino sardo e pan carasau · Strong cheddar cheese · Cheese board

Avoid Clash

Hot chilli dishes and delicate fish

Alcohol makes chilli heat burn hotter. At 14.5% this Primitivo turns a jalfrezi or a Szechuan dish into a fire. Its weight and tannin also flatten delicate fish and raw seafood. For those, a light Italian white such as Verdeca or Fiano from Puglia does the job.

Skip with: Chicken jalfrezi · Szechuan beef · Nigiri Sushi · Steamed sea bass · Green curry · Pairing guide →

Keeping San Moro Riserva 2023: drink by 2029

This is not a wine to lay down. The two years of ageing a Riserva needs happened at the winery, so the 2023 is ready now and will hold until 2029. Store it on its side in a cool, dark place. It comes under a natural cork; the rules do not allow a screwcap on a Riserva.

Aim for the cooler end on a warm day; warmer end opens up more aromatics.

Common Questions

Produttori di Manduria, the growers' cooperative in Manduria. It took its co-operative form on 9 July 1932, under the legal name Consorzio Produttori Vini e Mosti Rossi. San Moro is a label it does not list on its own site; at home its Riserva wines are called Sonetto and Elegia. Its members farm more than 700 hectares of vines, by the cooperative's own account, and over half of that is Primitivo.

Two years of ageing from 1 November of the harvest year, with at least nine months in wood. The rules also set a minimum strength of 14%. A Riserva may go on sale only two years after the 31 March that follows the harvest. For the 2023 that meant 31 March 2026. A Riserva may not be sealed with a screwcap; this one has a natural cork.

The one shop on this page is The Wine Society, which asks £13.95 for the 2023. It is a co-operative owned by its members, so you join first (a share costs £40) and then buy. With one shop there is no price to compare here. The shop also runs a case saving on this wine until 16 November 2026.

Drink it between 2026 and 2029. The cellar work a Riserva needs was done before release, so it is ready now. Keep it lying down somewhere cool. The natural cork and the 14.5% alcohol will hold it for those three years. It will not gain much after that.

Lamb, barbecue and slow-cooked meat sauces. The ripe tannin and 14.5% alcohol need fat and protein to lean on. Lamb chops, pulled pork, a beef stew or a lasagne all work. Keep it away from chilli heat, which the alcohol makes burn hotter, and from delicate fish.

Only lightly. The Riserva rules put it in wood for at least nine months. Large wooden casks leave a touch of vanilla and chocolate rather than a plank of oak. Drinkers who rate it mention black fruit more often than oak: blackberry, plum and blackcurrant lead, with pepper and a little leather behind.
