Tasting Notes

How Bukkuram Sole d'Agosto tastes

Sole d'Agosto comes from bush vines of 40 to 55 years on terraced volcanic slopes in the Bukkuram district of Pantelleria. The grapes are picked by hand in two passes, in August and September.

Raisin, dried fig and apricot come first, with honey and a hint of ginger behind them. Part of the Zibibbo dries in the sun for at least two weeks at Bukkuram, on mats walled in by lava stone.

Palate

The palate is sweet and fruity, with apricot and peach over the raisin. The wine soaks with the dried grapes for about three months, and they give it sugar, colour and aroma. A touch of caramel sits underneath, and the wine spends a brief spell of at least six months in barrel before steel.

Finish

It ends fresh, with orange peel and almond after the dried fruit.

Overall

Marco De Bartoli's family calls this its younger, fresher and more immediate passito, first made in 2011. Drinkers rate it highly and keep coming back to raisin, apricot and honey; we would open it now, with blue cheese or a festive cake.

Where Sole d'Agosto fits: the end of a special meal

Best for an occasion comes first for Sole d'Agosto, with Best intro to this style and Best with food close behind.

Best for an occasion 8.2/10

Marco De Bartoli's sweet wine from Pantelleria, made partly from Zibibbo dried in the August sun, is a bottle to open with Panettone at Christmas or a fine blue cheese.

Best intro to this style 7.2/10

Raisin, apricot and honey make it easy to read, and the family made it as its younger, fresher passito. It is a good first taste of Passito di Pantelleria.

Best with food 7.0/10

A sweet Zibibbo passito for the end of a meal: very good with blue cheese, festive Italian cakes and almond pastries, but not a wine for a main course.

Best value 5.5/10

At £57 it is a lot for one bottle. Still, it is a full 75 cl bottle, and the grapes are picked by hand in two passes, with part of them dried in the sun.

Best for cellar 5.5/10

The family makes Sole d'Agosto younger and more immediate, with a brief spell in barrel. Its passito of great vintages is Padre della Vigna, with 30 months in French oak.

Best everyday bottle 1.5/10

At £57 a bottle and sweet, this is a wine for a special dinner or a cheese board, not a weeknight.

Scoring is rule-based and deterministic. The model and weightings are documented in our Wine Fit Score methodology.

The disciplinare, the place, the label

Marco De Bartoli and the Bukkuram estate on Pantelleria

Marco De Bartoli founded his winery near Marsala in 1978 and acquired a property in the Bukkuram district of Pantelleria in the 1980s. Sole d'Agosto is the estate's younger passito, and Padre della Vigna, first made in 1984, is its passito of great vintages.

01

DOC, DOCG, IGT: what the badges mean

Italian wine law sorts bottles into a pyramid. DOCG sits at the top: tightly drawn boundaries, prescribed grapes, mandatory ageing, government tasting before release. DOC is the same idea with looser thresholds. IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) is broader still, requiring only that 85% of the grapes come from the named territory.

Pantelleria is in the DOC tier. That is not a quality verdict, it is a description of how much freedom the producer has at vinification and ageing.

02

The denomination rules, in detail

  • Allowed grapes. 1 varieties listed in the disciplinare
  • Yield ceiling. 10.0 tonnes per hectare

Food Pairing

Blue cheese, Panettone and almond pastries with Sole d'Agosto

The family says soaking the wine with sun-dried grapes gives it freshness and a fruity structure. It is a sweet wine for the end of a meal, with salty blue cheese or a festive Italian cake.

Salt balance Strong match

Stilton, blue cheese and the cheese board

Salt in a blue cheese makes the sweetness of this Zibibbo passito taste brighter, and the wine softens the cheese's sharp edge. Raisin and honey sit well beside the blue veins.

Try with: Stilton · Blue cheese · Cheese board

Aromatic bridge Strong match

Panettone and other bakes full of raisins

The raisin and dried fig in this Passito di Pantelleria meet the dried fruit in the bake, so each sip and bite echo each other. Its orange peel picks up the candied peel in a Panettone.

Try with: Panettone · Christmas Pudding · Bread and Butter Pudding

Sweet balance Good match

Pastiera, cheesecake and creamy cakes

A creamy, gently sweet cake lets the sweetness and apricot fruit of this Zibibbo passito show. The wine's freshness lifts the cream, so the next mouthful tastes clean.

Try with: Pastiera napoletana · Cheesecake · Tres Leches Cake

Fat cutting Good match

Bakewell tart, baklava and buttery pastries

The fresh side of this passito cuts through buttery pastry. Its almond and honey notes meet the nuts and honey in the filling.

Try with: Bakewell Tart · Baklava · Strudel

Avoid Clash

Hot curries and chilli

Chilli heat makes the alcohol in this passito burn and buries its apricot and honey. Save fiery curries and Sichuan dishes for another bottle.

Skip with: Chicken madras · Chicken jalfrezi · Szechuan beef · Crispy chilli beef · Pairing guide →

Common Questions

It is Marco De Bartoli's younger Passito di Pantelleria, a sweet white wine made every year from 100% Zibibbo in the family's Bukkuram vineyard on Pantelleria. The first vintage was 2011.

The name means August sun. Marco De Bartoli often said the August sun was essential to his passito. August is the month the grapes are laid out to dry at Bukkuram.

Sole d'Agosto is the younger, fresher one, and Padre della Vigna is the family's passito of great vintages. Padre della Vigna dries half its grapes for at least four weeks and spends 30 months in French oak. Sole d'Agosto dries part of its grapes for at least two weeks and has a brief spell of at least six months in barrel.

Part of the Zibibbo is picked by hand in the second week of August and dried in the sun for at least two weeks. The rest ripens on the vine until September and ferments with native yeasts. The wine then soaks with the dried grapes for about three months, and they give it sugar, colour and aroma.

Blue cheese such as Stilton is the best match, because its salt brightens the wine's sweetness. It also suits Panettone, Pastiera and almond pastries such as Bakewell tart.

The one shop on this page sells the 2023 in a 75 cl bottle at £57, so there is no price to compare here.
