Tasting Notes

What Vite Colte's Il Furetto tastes like: strawberry, rose and almond

Il Furetto is a sweet Brachetto d'Acqui with a light fizz and just 6% alcohol. Vite Colte puts the sugar at about 130 grams a litre, and fresh acidity keeps it lively rather than syrupy.

Nose

Strawberry and cherry come first, with rose petals close behind. That rose scent is the mark of Brachetto, and Vite Colte puts it down to the grape's high sugar and strong natural aroma.

Rose petalRose petal
CherryCherry
Red forest berriesRed forest berries
StrawberryStrawberry
AlmondAlmond
Palate

It is sweet and light, with just 6% alcohol and about 16 grams of sugar in a 125 ml glass. Fresh acidity keeps that sugar in check, and the texture is smooth. The gentle fizz comes only from its own fermentation, and the pressed juice is kept chilled until then.

Finish

It ends on a soft note of almond. The balance of sugar and acidity leaves the mouth fresh rather than sticky.

Overall

This is a light, low-alcohol sweet red made to drink young, so open the 2025 by the end of 2027. Drinkers rate it well and single out its strawberry fruit.

Wine fit score

Who Vite Colte's Il Furetto suits

Its strongest cards are Best intro to this style and Best with food. Il Furetto is sweet and light at 6% alcohol, and made for strawberry puddings and chocolate.

Best intro to this style 8.5/10

Sweet, fruity, lightly fizzy and only 6% alcohol, with a smooth feel. It is an easy first red for anyone who finds most reds too dry.

Best with food 7.2/10

Made for strawberry puddings, fruit and chocolate, and it can open a meal beside salami and salty snacks. With savoury main courses its sweetness gets in the way.

Best value 6.5/10

At about £15, Il Furetto costs more than most Brachetto d'Acqui sold in the UK, though not the most. You pay extra for a wine from growers held to strict vineyard rules.

Best for an occasion 6.2/10

Its bright, pinkish red colour, rose scent and gentle fizz suit Valentine's Day, birthdays and summer parties. It is a cheerful bottle rather than a grand one.

Best everyday bottle 6.0/10

Light and only 6% alcohol, so a glass with fruit after supper is easy. Its sweetness means most people will save it for pudding rather than pour it with dinner every night.

Best for cellar 1.0/10

Made to drink young: Brachetto d'Acqui is meant for the first year or two after release. Drink the 2025 by the end of 2027.

Scoring is rule-based and deterministic. The model and weightings are documented in our Wine Fit Score methodology.

The 2025 Il Furetto: an early, aromatic Brachetto harvest

The 2025 is the vintage on sale, from a hot, early harvest in the Brachetto hills. It is made for drinking now, so open it by the end of 2027.

A scorching first half of August pushed the 2025 Brachetto harvest about a week ahead of 2024. Storms on 17 and 18 August then cooled the nights, and the grapes came in healthy, aromatic and fresh.

The disciplinare, the place, the label

What the Brachetto d'Acqui DOCG rules mean for Il Furetto

Il Furetto is the plain Brachetto d'Acqui type, the sweet red known as tappo raso. Its fizz must come only from its own fermentation, at no more than 2.5 bar. At least 97% of the grapes must be Brachetto, and the vintage must appear on the label.

01

DOC, DOCG, IGT: what the badges mean

Italian wine law sorts bottles into a pyramid. DOCG sits at the top: tightly drawn boundaries, prescribed grapes, mandatory ageing, government tasting before release. DOC is the same idea with looser thresholds. IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) is broader still, requiring only that 85% of the grapes come from the named territory.

Brachetto d'Acqui/Acqui is in the DOCG tier. That is not a quality verdict, it is a description of how much freedom the producer has at vinification and ageing.

  1. 01

Only 6% alcohol, so it pays the lower UK duty rate

    Cost down

UK duty on wine from 3.5% to 8.4% alcohol is £26.61 per litre of pure alcohol, against £30.62 from 8.5%. At 6%, a bottle of Il Furetto carries about £1.20 of duty, where a 13% red pays about £3.

  2. 02

VAT and duty inside the shelf price

    Cost up

Of a bottle at about £15, about £3.70 is tax: roughly £2.50 of VAT plus the £1.20 of duty.

  3. 03

Growers paid by vineyard size, not by the crop

    Cost up

Vite Colte pays each of its 180 member growers by the area they farm, not the weight they pick, so nobody gains by pushing the vines for volume. Fewer grapes per vine cost more per bottle.

  4. 04

Vines at least 15 years old, picked fully by hand

    Cost up

Vite Colte only takes vineyards at least 15 years old, with low yields per vine, and has the harvest done fully by hand. Each costs more than young vines and machine picking.

  5. 05

Juice kept chilled until it ferments

    Cost up

Vite Colte keeps the pressed Brachetto juice cold until fermentation, which gives the wine its natural fizz. Holding juice in chilled tanks takes space and power.

Food Pairing

Strawberries, chocolate and salami: food for Vite Colte's Il Furetto

Strawberry and rose on the nose and real sweetness on the palate point Il Furetto at fruit puddings and chocolate. Brachetto d'Acqui has long been drunk with fruit, and strawberries and peaches suit it well. Keep the dessert less sweet than the wine, or the wine will taste thin.

Aromatic bridge Strong match

Strawberry puddings and summer berries

Il Furetto smells of strawberry and rose, so a strawberry pudding meets it note for note. Its sugar matches the dessert's, and the light fizz lifts cream off the tongue. Brachetto d'Acqui has long been drunk with desserts and fruit, above all strawberries and peaches.

Try with: Eton Mess · strawberry tart · Trifle · fresh strawberries

Sweet balance Strong match

Chocolate cake and chocolate mousse

Chocolate makes most dry reds taste bitter, but Il Furetto has the sugar to stand up to it. Its fresh acidity and gentle fizz then clean the cocoa from your mouth between bites.

Try with: Chocolate cake · chocolate mousse · Torta Barozzi · chocolate truffles

Aromatic bridge Good match

Almond bakes with cherry or raspberry jam

Il Furetto finishes on almond, so an almond bake carries that last note on. Cherry or raspberry jam meets the cherry in its scent, and the wine's sugar keeps pace with the pastry.

Try with: Bakewell Tart · cherry clafoutis · almond cake · amaretti biscuits

Salt balance Good match

Salami and salty snacks before dinner

Salt makes a sweet wine taste fresher and fruitier, and the sugar softens the salt in turn. In Brachetto country, farm families drank aromatic wines, sweet ones too, with salami and salty crostini. Serve Il Furetto well chilled as an aperitivo.

Try with: salami · prosciutto · salty crostini · Robiola di Roccaverano cheese

Acidity matching Good match

Ripe peaches and fruit salad

Ripe fruit is sweet and juicy, and Il Furetto's fresh acidity keeps pace with it, so neither tastes flat. Its strawberry and cherry notes sit happily with summer fruit.

Try with: fresh peaches · fruit salad · raspberries · watermelon

Avoid Clash

Heavy puddings sweeter than the wine

A dense, very sweet pudding makes Il Furetto taste thin and sour. At 6% alcohol and light in body, it cannot match treacle, dried fruit or syrup. Save these for a richer, stronger sweet wine such as a Vin Santo.

Skip with: Sticky Toffee Pudding · Christmas Pudding · Baklava · pecan pie · Pairing guide →

Common Questions

Yes, it is a sweet red. Vite Colte's sheet gives about 130 grams of sugar per litre, which is about 16 grams in a 125 ml glass. Fresh acidity balances the sugar, so it tastes lively rather than syrupy.

It is lightly sparkling, not fully sparkling like a spumante. Its bubbles come only from its own fermentation. For this type of Brachetto d'Acqui, the rules cap the pressure at 2.5 bar and ban the mushroom cork and wire cage of a spumante.

Strawberry puddings and chocolate are its best matches. Its strawberry and rose scent mirrors the fruit, and its sugar stands up to cocoa. Keep the dessert less sweet than the wine. Before a meal, it also works with salami and salty snacks.

Serve it cold, at 8 to 12°C, and drink the 2025 by the end of 2027. Brachetto d'Acqui is meant to be drunk within a year or two of release, so there is nothing to gain from keeping it.

Vite Colte makes it, a winery in Barolo whose 180 member growers farm vineyards across Piedmont. The grapes for Il Furetto come from the Monferrato hills. Vite Colte grew out of the Terre da Vino group, and it pays its growers by the size of their vineyards, not by the crop.

Vino.com sells it in the UK, so there is no price to compare between shops here. A single bottle costs about £15, and the price per bottle drops when you buy six or more.
