The Bosco family's own sheet describes wild cherry and red berries, a touch of spice and a smooth, medium-bodied taste. The grapes are Montepulciano alone, grown on pebbly, chalky hillsides around Nocciano, near Pescara, and fermented in steel tanks.

Palate

Medium-bodied and smooth, made from Montepulciano alone. The grapes grow on pebbly, chalky hillsides around Nocciano and ferment in steel tanks kept at a steady temperature. In the 2025, plum and black cherry fill out the middle, and the texture stays smooth.

Finish

Dry and smooth, with plum and black cherry lingering. The 2025 has under 3 grams of sugar a litre, so it tastes properly dry.

Overall

An easy, everyday Montepulciano d'Abruzzo from a family that has made wine near Pescara since 1897. Drinkers rate it a fair everyday red rather than a standout, and often mention darker fruit, tobacco and an earthy edge. We would drink the 2025 from 2026 to 2028.

Wine fit score

Where Bosco's Linea Classica Montepulciano d'Abruzzo fits

Bosco's Linea Classica scores highest as an everyday red, for value and for beginners: a smooth, medium-bodied Montepulciano d'Abruzzo at about £12 to £13 a bottle.

Best everyday bottle 9.0/10

About £12 to £13, smooth, and good with pizza, pasta and cold meats. A midweek red you can open without a reason.

Best value 8.5/10

At about £12 to £13 a bottle it costs less than most Montepulciano d'Abruzzo on sale in the UK, from a family winery founded in 1897.

Best intro to this style 8.5/10

Smooth, medium-bodied and fruity, with soft tannins and no sweetness. An easy first taste of Montepulciano, Abruzzo's own red grape, at a modest price.

Best with food 8.0/10

A smooth, medium-bodied red that the family pairs with salami, cheese, roast meat and arrosticini. It handles pizza and meat sauces well, but not chilli heat or raw fish.

Best for an occasion 3.0/10

An honest everyday bottle rather than a gift or a special-dinner wine. For a bigger night, look to the family's Riserva.

Best for cellar 2.5/10

A young red for drinking soon. We would open the 2025 from 2026 to 2028, while its cherry fruit is fresh.

Scoring is rule-based and deterministic. The model and weightings are documented in our Wine Fit Score methodology.

All three shops with it in stock sell the 2025, at 13.5% alcohol. Early reports on Abruzzo's 2025 harvest said water stored up in spring helped the vineyards through the summer heatwaves. It is a young, smooth red: we would drink it from 2026 to 2028.

The disciplinare, the place, the label

Bosco Nestore: a Nocciano family making Montepulciano d'Abruzzo since 1897

Giovanni Bosco founded the winery in 1897, and the fourth generation, Nestore and Stefania Bosco, runs it today. The vineyards lie in the hills behind Pescara, between the Maiella and the Gran Sasso, with a breeze off the sea. The winery makes about 650,000 bottles a year.

01

DOC, DOCG, IGT: what the badges mean

Italian wine law sorts bottles into a pyramid. DOCG sits at the top: tightly drawn boundaries, prescribed grapes, mandatory ageing, government tasting before release. DOC is the same idea with looser thresholds. IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) is broader still, requiring only that 85% of the grapes come from the named territory.

Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is in the DOC tier. That is not a quality verdict, it is a description of how much freedom the producer has at vinification and ageing.

02

The denomination rules, in detail

  • Allowed grapes. 1 varieties listed in the disciplinare
  • Yield ceiling. 15.0 tonnes per hectare
  • Minimum ABV. 12.0% vol

Mostly cost down
Drivers
2 up / 4 down
Main factor
UK duty and VAT inside a £13 bottle
  1. 01

UK duty and VAT inside a £13 bottle

    Cost up

Of a £13 bottle, about £5.27 is tax: £3.10 of duty and £2.17 of VAT. The UK charges £30.62 duty per litre of pure alcohol, so a 13.5% wine pays a little more than a 12% one.

  2. 02

A bigger crop per hectare than the family's Riserva

    Cost down

Bosco's sheet gives a yield of 11.5 tonnes per hectare for the Linea Classica, against 8 tonnes for its Don Bosco Riserva. More wine from each hectare keeps the cost of each bottle down.

  3. 03

Fermented in steel and sold young

    Cost down

The grapes ferment in steel tanks at a steady temperature, and the 2025 reached UK shelves within a year of its October harvest. Less time in the cellar means less money tied up before the wine is sold.

  4. 04

A large family winery: about 650,000 bottles a year

    Cost down

The Bosco winery in Nocciano makes about 650,000 bottles a year across its ranges. Bottling and shipping at that scale cost less per bottle than at a small estate.

  5. 05

    Natural cork, not a screwcap

    Cost up

The 2025 is sealed with natural cork, which costs more than a screwcap. It is a small part of a £13 price, but it is there.

  6. 06

Cheaper by the six or twelve at two shops

    Cost down

Two of the three UK shops take more off the £13 single-bottle price when you buy six or twelve bottles, so a case works out cheaper per bottle.

Perfect Pairings

Dishes that go with this wine

Food Pairing

Salami, cheese and arrosticini: what to eat with Bosco's Montepulciano d'Abruzzo

The Bosco family pairs this wine with salami and cheeses, roast meat and arrosticini, the grilled lamb skewers of Abruzzo. A smooth, medium-bodied red suits food like this without swamping it. Keep it away from hot chilli.

Salt balance Strong match

Salami, cured meats and a cheese board

Salt in cured meat and aged cheese softens the tannin in Bosco's Montepulciano d'Abruzzo and makes its cherry fruit taste riper. A smooth, medium-bodied red does not overpower a plate of salami. This is the first match on the family's own sheet.

Try with: Cheese board · Pecorino sardo e pan carasau · Strong cheddar cheese

Body matching Strong match

Arrosticini and other lamb dishes

Arrosticini, Abruzzo's grilled lamb skewers, are small and fatty, and a medium-bodied Montepulciano d'Abruzzo matches their weight without swamping them. Its red fruit and light spice lift each salty, smoky bite. The Bosco family calls this wine perfect with arrosticini.

Try with: Arrosticini · Agnello Cacio e Ova · Agnello Ragu Lucano · Lamb chops · More pairings →

Tannin softening Good match

Roast meats

Protein and fat in a roast soften the tannin in this Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, so the wine tastes rounder and fruitier with each bite. It is a smooth, medium-bodied red, so it suits roast pork or chicken as well as beef.

Try with: Roast pork · Roast chicken · Sunday Roast Beef · Beef stew · More pairings →

Body matching Good match

Pasta with a meat sauce

A meat ragù needs a red with some body, and Montepulciano d'Abruzzo has enough without being heavy. Its cherry fruit sits well with slow-cooked tomato. Try it with spaghetti alla chitarra, the square-cut pasta of Abruzzo.

Try with: Spaghetti alla chitarra · Lasagna · Ragu alla bolognese · More pairings →

Aromatic bridge Good match

Pizza and flatbreads

The red fruit and light spice in Bosco's Montepulciano d'Abruzzo meet the tomato, herbs and char of a pizza. The wine is smooth and not too heavy, so it suits a thin crust as well as a richer topping.

Try with: Pizza Margherita · Pizza Romana · Pizza Marinara · Crescia · More pairings →

Avoid Clash

Hot curries and chilli heat

Chilli makes the 13.5% alcohol in this Montepulciano d'Abruzzo taste hotter and turns its tannin bitter. Raw fish and oysters also clash with a red and taste metallic. With hot or raw food, pour a lightly sweet Moscato d'Asti or a crisp Vermentino instead.

Skip with: Chicken jalfrezi · Green curry · Szechuan beef · Nigiri Sushi · Oysters · Pairing guide →

Drinking + cellar

How long to keep Bosco Linea Classica Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2025

Bosco's Linea Classica is a smooth, medium-bodied red to drink young, not one for the cellar. We would open the 2025 from 2026 to 2028, while the cherry fruit is fresh. Until then, keep bottles lying down somewhere cool and dark.

Drinking window
2026 → 2028

Best in the years above; holds without falling over either side.

Decanting
1 hour

A short splash decant softens the first-pour edge and opens the aromatics.

Serving temperature
16-18°C

Aim for the cooler end on a warm day; warmer end opens up more aromatics.

Cellar potential
Low

A young red for drinking soon. We would open the 2025 from 2026 to 2028, while its cherry fruit is fresh.

Bosco Linea Classica: grape, appellation and producer

Common Questions

It is made from Montepulciano alone, the signature red grape of Abruzzo. The family's technical sheet lists no other variety. The vines grow on pebbly, chalky soil in the hills around Nocciano, in the province of Pescara.

It is a smooth, medium-bodied red with wild cherry, red berries and a little spice. The 2025 adds plum and black cherry on the palate. It is dry, with under 3 grams of sugar a litre, and 13.5% alcohol.

Salami, cheese and roast meat, the matches the Bosco family gives, and above all arrosticini, Abruzzo's grilled lamb skewers. It also suits pizza and pasta with a meat sauce. Avoid hot curries, as chilli makes the alcohol taste hotter.

The 2025 costs about £12 to £13 a bottle at three UK shops. Two of them take a little more off when you buy six or twelve bottles. That puts it among the cheaper Montepulciano d'Abruzzo on UK shelves.

Drink it now. We would open the 2025 between 2026 and 2028, while its cherry fruit is fresh. It is a smooth, young red, not one to lay down for years.

Bosco Nestore, a family winery in Nocciano near Pescara, founded by Giovanni Bosco in 1897. The fourth generation, Nestore and Stefania Bosco, runs it today. Linea Classica is one of the family's five ranges; the Don Bosco Riserva and Pan sit in its Top range.
