- Typical of Nebbiolo
Sweet spice, dried flowers, leather and undergrowth lead. The 2022 is smoky and spicy, with embers and bergamot over the dried flowers. The 2021 has a pretty chalky quality, most of all on the bouquet, with cocktail cherry and cassis.
Harmonious, with good structure and elegant tannins, both refined and powerful. The 2022 is firm and full-bodied, its tannins austere yet balanced, with refreshing acidity to carry it. The Nebbiolo comes from the family's own vineyards in La Morra, Verduno and Serralunga d'Alba, blended the traditional way.
The 2022 finishes dry and sticky and is best left until 2028: James Suckling scored it 92 and says to wait. The 2021 is readier, informal, bright and accessible, and the Wine Advocate scored it 92.
This is Ascheri's biggest Barolo, the traditional three-village blend, with 45,500 bottles of the 2021 made. A well-liked, classic Barolo for anyone who wants one to drink with a slow meal.

Where Ascheri's Barolo scores best
Best value and best with food: a Barolo DOCG from £28.78 that the Wine Advocate scored 92 for the 2021. It is firm enough for braised beef and game.
The 2021 sells from £28.78, cheaper than more than nine in ten of the 422 Barolo in stock on this site. Both vintages carry 92-point scores, the 2021 from the Wine Advocate.
Firm and full-bodied with refreshing acidity, so it wants food. It is at its best with braised beef, game, lamb and egg pasta.
A Barolo DOCG from a family that has made wine since the early 1800s. The Wine Advocate gave the 2021 92 points, and the 2022 scored 92 too. Right for a Sunday roast or a birthday dinner.
Ascheri gives it 18 to 20 years in a cool, dark place. The 2021 comes from a vintage that James Suckling's report says 'is looking like a landmark year', with high acidity for long ageing.
The 2021 is informal, bright and accessible, which helps. Still, the tannins are firm and UK shops list 14.5 to 15% alcohol, so it is a big first step rather than an easy one.
Cheap for a Barolo at £28.78. Still, the firm tannins make it a bottle for a proper meal, not a glass on its own on a weeknight.
Scoring is rule-based and deterministic. The model and weightings are documented in our Wine Fit Score methodology.

2021 or 2022: a great year and a drought year
The 2021 Barolo vintage 'is looking like a landmark year', in James Suckling's report, with high acidity for long ageing. The 2022 came from a drought, when the shoots in Ascheri's vineyards never reached the third wire of the trellis. He still gave the 2022 92 points.

Perfect Pairings
Dishes that go with this wine
Dishes for a firm, full-bodied Barolo: beef, game and truffle pasta
The 2022 is firm and full-bodied, with austere yet balanced tannins and refreshing acidity. That grip wants braised beef, game, lamb or egg pasta, the matches that suit it best.
Braised and roast beef
Slow-cooked beef softens firm tannin, and the gravy picks up the wine's leather and sweet spice. The 2022's tannins are austere yet balanced: the grip of a firm, full-bodied Barolo like this one.
Try with: Brasato al Barolo · Ossobuco alla Milanese · Fiorentina steak · Sunday Roast Beef · More pairings →
Egg pasta with truffle or a meat sauce
Fresh acidity cuts through butter, egg yolk and meat sauce, and keeps each mouthful lively. The 2022 has refreshing acidity, and its undergrowth note meets truffle head on. Piedmont's tajarin and agnolotti are the home match for a firm, dry Barolo like this.
Try with: Tajarin al Tartufo · Agnolotti del Plin · Ragu alla bolognese · Tagliatelle al tartufo di Acqualagna · More pairings →
Mushroom and truffle risotto
Earthy food meets earthy wine: leather and tar run through this Barolo. Those notes carry straight into porcini and truffle, while the wine's cherry fruit keeps the dish from feeling heavy.
Try with: Porcini mushroom risotto · Truffle risotto · Polenta alla Valdostana · More pairings →
Venison, game and lamb
A full-bodied red needs a dish with the same weight, and game and lamb have it. The 2022 is full-bodied, and UK shops list it at 15% alcohol. Lamb and game are among this Barolo's best matches.
Try with: Venison Stew · Leg of lamb · Rack of lamb · Roast Duck
Hard and aged cheeses
Salt and fat in an aged cheese soften firm tannin and bring the fruit forward. A dry, firm Barolo like Ascheri's suits a hard cheese better than a soft, creamy one.
Try with: Strong cheddar cheese · Cheese board · Pecorino sardo e pan carasau
Chilli heat and delicate fish
At 14.5 to 15% alcohol, with firm tannin, this Barolo makes chilli burn hotter. The same tannin can taste metallic with oily or delicate fish, so keep it away from sushi and steamed fish.
Skip with: Crispy chilli beef · Green curry · Nigiri Sushi · Steamed sea bass · Pairing guide →

Ascheri gives the wine 18 to 20 years in a cool, dark place. The 2021 drinks well now and should keep until about 2039. The 2022 wants until 2028 and should keep until about 2040.
Best in the years above; holds without falling over either side.
A short splash decant softens the first-pour edge and opens the aromatics.
Aim for the cooler end on a warm day; warmer end opens up more aromatics.
Ascheri gives it 18 to 20 years in a cool, dark place. The 2021 comes from a vintage that James Suckling's report says 'is looking like a landmark year', with high acidity for long ageing.

Ascheri gives it 18 to 20 years in a cool, dark place. The 2021 drinks well now and should keep until about 2039. James Suckling says to try the 2022 from 2028, and it should keep until about 2040.
Braised beef, game, lamb and egg pasta with truffle or a meat sauce. The firm tannins and fresh acidity need a dish with some fat and weight. Beef, lamb, pasta and game are the classic matches for it.
No. This is the blend, sold in a blue label with no vineyard name, and Ascheri lists it as its Blue Label. Barolo Ascheri has a cream label with ASCHERI under the word Barolo. It comes from one vineyard area in La Morra, the village where the family started out. Ascheri makes it, like Sorano, Pisapola and Coste & Bricco, only in the best years.
Four UK shops have it in stock. Vinatis sells the 2021 at £28.78, the lowest price on this page. Great Wines Direct has the 2022 at £35.03, and The Great Wine Co. has it at £38 on offer, down from £44. Field & Fawcett sells it at £41.60 without naming the vintage.
