Tasting Notes

How Conte Vistarino's 2024 Sangue di Giuda tastes: violet, strawberry and sweet fruit

Conte Vistarino's 2024 is 65% Croatina and 35% Barbera, picked by hand in mid-September. The crushed grapes rest on their skins in the cold for five days to draw out colour and scent. Fermentation is then stopped by chilling, and the wine keeps 100 grams of sugar per litre at just 7% alcohol.

Sweet, soft and elegant, with the acidity and the natural sweetness in balance, as the producer's own note puts it. There are 100 grams of sugar in every litre against just 7% alcohol, and the fizz is light.

Finish

Fruit and sweetness carry through to the end. At only 7% alcohol, the 2024 leaves no heat on the finish.

Overall

A sweet red for dark chocolate or something spicy, best drunk young, by 2027. Falstaff scored the 2022 vintage at 90 points. It suits anyone who likes a red that is sweet, fruity and low in alcohol.

Wine fit score

Where Conte Vistarino Sangue di Giuda fits: sweet, fizzy and 7%

Its strongest card is Best intro to this style. Violet and strawberry, a light fizz and just 7% alcohol make it an easy first sweet red.

Best intro to this style 8.2/10

An easy first sweet red, with violet and strawberry on the nose, a light fizz and just 7% alcohol.

Best with food 6.4/10

It shines with dark chocolate desserts, spicy cured meats, red fruit and chilli heat, the matches Conte Vistarino gives. Being sweet, it suits fewer main courses than a dry red.

Best everyday bottle 5.5/10

Light in alcohol and fairly priced, but a sweet red suits a pudding or a spicy snack better than a weeknight dinner.

Best value 5.2/10

At £16.70 it buys a hand-picked DOC wine, and its low strength keeps UK duty to about £1.40 a bottle, around half what a 12% wine pays.

Best for an occasion 3.5/10

A cheerful bottle to finish a meal or share at a party, rather than one to mark a big day.

Best for cellar 1.2/10

Made to drink young. It sees no barrel, the rules set no ageing time, and we would open the 2024 by 2027.

Scoring is rule-based and deterministic. The model and weightings are documented in our Wine Fit Score methodology.

The disciplinare, the place, the label

Conte Vistarino and Sangue di Giuda, a DOC of the Oltrepò Pavese

The Giorgi di Vistarino family has owned a large farm estate at Rocca de' Giorgi since the mid-1400s, by its own account. Ottavia Giorgi di Vistarino leads the family firm today. Sangue di Giuda became a DOC in its own right in 2010. Its frizzante must have at least 80 grams of sugar per litre and at least 7% alcohol. At 7%, this 2024 sits right on the alcohol floor.

01

DOC, DOCG, IGT: what the badges mean

Italian wine law sorts bottles into a pyramid. DOCG sits at the top: tightly drawn boundaries, prescribed grapes, mandatory ageing, government tasting before release. DOC is the same idea with looser thresholds. IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) is broader still, requiring only that 85% of the grapes come from the named territory.

Sangue di Giuda dell'Oltrepò Pavese is in the DOC tier. That is not a quality verdict, it is a description of how much freedom the producer has at vinification and ageing.

Grapes picked by hand into 20 kg crates

    Cost up

  2. 02

Five days on the skins in chilled steel tanks

    Cost up

Before fermentation the crushed grapes rest for five days in chilled steel tanks to draw out colour and scent, a step that takes tank space and cooling.

  3. 03

Fizz made in a pressure tank, no time in barrel

    Cost down

The wine ferments in a sealed pressure tank that keeps its bubbles. It then goes into bottle with no time in barrel, so there is no oak or long cellar ageing to pay for.

  4. 04

Lower UK duty at 7% alcohol

    Cost down

Wine of 3.5% to 8.4% alcohol pays £26.61 of UK duty per litre of pure alcohol, against £30.62 from 8.5% to 22%. At 7% this bottle carries about £1.40 of duty, about half the £2.76 a 12% wine pays.

Food Pairing

Dark chocolate, spicy cured meats and red fruit with Conte Vistarino Sangue di Giuda

Conte Vistarino suggests dark chocolate desserts, spicy cured meats, red fruit salads and spicy dishes. A sweet red needs food that is less sweet than it is, and this one has 100 grams of sugar per litre to work with.

Sweet balance Strong match

Dark chocolate desserts

Dark chocolate is bitter and only lightly sweet, so a sweet red meets it without turning sour. This Sangue di Giuda from the Oltrepò Pavese has 100 grams of sugar per litre, which softens the bitterness and adds red fruit to the cocoa. Conte Vistarino suggests dark chocolate desserts itself.

Try with: Torta Barozzi · Dark chocolate cake · Dark chocolate mousse

Salt balance Strong match

Spicy cured meats

Salt and pepper in a spicy salami make a sweet wine taste fruitier. The light fizz and the acidity of this Croatina and Barbera red then clear the fat from your mouth. Conte Vistarino names spicy cured meats as a match.

Try with: Pizza Diavola · Spicy salami · 'Nduja on toast

Aromatic bridge Good match

Strawberries and red fruit salads

Conte Vistarino's Sangue di Giuda smells of violet and strawberry, so ripe red berries meet the same notes in the glass. Its sweetness matches the fruit, where a dry red would taste sharp beside it.

Try with: Fresh strawberries · Red berry fruit salad · Raspberries and cream

Sweet balance Good match

Chilli-hot dishes

Sugar softens chilli heat, while alcohol fans it. Sweet and only 7% alcohol, this Sangue di Giuda calms a hot dish where a strong dry red would make it burn more. The producer suggests spicy dishes too.

Try with: Crispy chilli beef · Chicken tikka · Red Curry

Avoid Clash

Puddings sweeter than the wine

A pudding sweeter than the wine strips out its fruit and leaves it tasting thin and sour. Even with 100 grams of sugar per litre, this Sangue di Giuda is outmatched by treacle tart or a tres leches cake.

Skip with: Treacle Tart · Tres Leches Cake · Sticky toffee pudding · Pairing guide →

Common Questions

Yes, it is a sweet wine. The producer gives it 100 grams of sugar per litre and just 7% alcohol. The rules for a Sangue di Giuda frizzante ask for at least 80 grams of sugar per litre.

It means Judas's blood. The producer tells an old legend about the name. In it, Judas, sorry for betraying Jesus, was forgiven and brought back to life in the Oltrepò. There he healed the local vines of a disease.

The 2024 is 65% Croatina and 35% Barbera, both red grapes. The producer's older sheet for the 2022 also listed Uva Rara, so earlier bottles may differ. The rules allow up to 65% Croatina, so the 2024 uses as much as is permitted.

Dark chocolate desserts, spicy cured meats, red fruit salads and spicy dishes are the producer's own suggestions. Its sweetness softens chilli heat, and at 7% alcohol it does not fan the burn the way a strong red would.

Serve it cool, at 12 to 15°C, the range the producer gives. That is cooler than most red wines are served.
