Tasting Notes

What Tenuta San Francesco's Tramonti Bianco tastes like

The grapes grow between 300 and 600 metres above the Amalfi coast, on terraces facing south-east. The wine is made in steel only and spends six to eight months there before bottling. That is why it tastes of white peach, lemon and sage, with a salty, stony edge and no oak.

Nose

White peach first, then lemon and a brush of sage and thyme. The scent is clean and bright, with no oak at all, because Tenuta San Francesco makes this wine in steel only. Underneath sits a cool, stony note from the thin layer of red clay and volcanic ash over limestone on the Tramonti terraces.

Palate

Crisp and dry, with a lemon bite and a salty, stony edge. The body is medium at 13% alcohol. The grapes grow between 300 and 600 metres, in a cool climate with big swings between day and night, and are picked in October, so the wine keeps its freshness. Peach comes back in the middle, and there is no creamy weight because the wine never touches wood.

Finish

Soft and clean, the stony note lasting after the fruit fades. Six to eight months in steel, then a month or two in bottle, keep that finish bright.

Overall

This is the estate's everyday white. It comes from about six football pitches of white grapes on the terraces around Tramonti, where four local growers founded Tenuta San Francesco in 2004. Drinkers pick out the peach, the citrus and the stony side most often, and so do we. Drink it young, within two or three years of the harvest, with seafood or starters.

Buying Tramonti Bianco in the UK: one shop, about £24

Vino.com is the only UK shop we list for this wine, with the 2025 at about £24 a bottle. There is no second price to compare, so the question is whether a steel-made Amalfi white at that money suits you. On this site most other Costa d'Amalfi whites cost more, some of them several times more, so about £24 is the cheap end.

Wine fit score

Where Tramonti Bianco fits: food first, then first-time buyers

Its strongest cards are food and beginner appeal: crisp, dry and 13%, with no oak to get in the way, and seafood is the obvious match.

Best with food 8.5/10

Crisp, dry, salty and oak-free at 13%: a white that suits most seafood, fried food and simple starters.

Best intro to this style 8.0/10

Dry, fruity, unoaked and 13%: easy to like, from a place that is easy to picture, the terraces above the Amalfi coast.

Best value 6.0/10

About £24 is the cheap end for a Costa d'Amalfi white: most others on this site cost more, some several times more. Many other Campania whites cost less.

Best everyday bottle 6.0/10

An easy midweek white with fish, though about £24 is above a bargain budget.

Best for an occasion 5.5/10

A DOC white from a small Amalfi estate: a good summer-lunch bottle rather than a celebration wine.

Best for cellar 2.5/10

Made in steel for freshness and released after six to eight months: drink within two or three years of the harvest.

Scoring is rule-based and deterministic. The model and weightings are documented in our Wine Fit Score methodology.

The disciplinare, the place, the label

Tramonti inside the Costa d'Amalfi DOC: what the rules ask of this white

Tramonti is one of three named areas in the Costa d'Amalfi DOC, with Ravello and Furore, and covers the villages of Tramonti and Maiori. A white that carries the name must be at least 40% Falanghina or Biancolella, alone or combined, reach 11% alcohol and crop lower than the plain Costa d'Amalfi white. Tenuta San Francesco's own terraces give 7 to 9 tonnes a hectare, under the 10-tonne cap.

01

DOC, DOCG, IGT: what the badges mean

Italian wine law sorts bottles into a pyramid. DOCG sits at the top: tightly drawn boundaries, prescribed grapes, mandatory ageing, government tasting before release. DOC is the same idea with looser thresholds. IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) is broader still, requiring only that 85% of the grapes come from the named territory.

Costa d'Amalfi is in the DOC tier. That is not a quality verdict, it is a description of how much freedom the producer has at vinification and ageing.

02

Steep terraces between 300 and 600 metres above the Amalfi coast

    Cost up

Tenuta San Francesco's vines stand on steep terraced slopes facing south-east, in the hills of Tramonti. Terraces cannot be farmed like a flat vineyard, so each bottle carries more labour.

  2. 02

Low yields on the estate's terraces

    Cost up

The estate crops about 7 to 9 tonnes of grapes per hectare, under the 10-tonne cap the Tramonti rules allow. Fewer grapes per vine means fewer bottles to spread the costs over.

  3. 03

A small estate: about six football pitches of white grapes

    Cost up

The white grapes, including the named plot Vigna dei Preti, cover four and a half hectares, about six football pitches. Small volumes mean each bottle carries a bigger share of the fixed costs.

  4. 04

    Steel only, no oak barrels

    Cost down

The wine is made and aged in steel for six to eight months and never sees a barrel. So there is no barrel cost and no years of cellar storage in the price.

  5. 05

UK duty and VAT inside the price

    Cost up

Of a bottle at about £24, about £7 is tax: about £3 of duty at 13% alcohol, plus VAT at a sixth of the price.

Food Pairing

Seafood, herbs and fried things: what to eat with Tramonti Bianco

The producer's own suggestion is starters and seafood, and the wine's crisp, salty side explains why. Its lemon bite cuts through fried squid, and its peach and herb notes sit well beside grilled fish, mozzarella and basil.

Acidity matching Strong match

Fried seafood and fish and chips

The lemon bite cuts straight through batter and oil, so each mouthful tastes clean again. This is a crisp, dry Costa d'Amalfi white at 13%, and fried food is where it shows best.

Try with: Fritto misto · Fish and Chips · Salt and pepper squid · Prawn Tempura

Salt balance Strong match

Raw and lightly cooked fish, Japanese style

A salty, stony white with no oak sits well beside raw fish and soy. Its peach note softens the salt in the soy, and the acidity keeps tempura light: an Amalfi white doing the job a dry white should.

Try with: Sashimi · Nigiri Sushi · Prawn Tempura · Tempura · More pairings →

Aromatic bridge Good match

Mozzarella, tomato and basil

The wine smells of sage and thyme, herbs from the same hills as the basil and lemon of the Amalfi table. Its peach note meets the milky mozzarella, and the acidity keeps the tomato bright: a Costa d'Amalfi white for a caprese salad.

Try with: Insalata Caprese · Pizza Margherita · Focaccia · More pairings →

Body matching Good match

Grilled and steamed white fish

Medium-bodied and dry, this Tramonti white neither crushes a plain piece of sea bass nor gets lost beside it. Its salty edge works like a squeeze of lemon on the fish.

Try with: Steamed sea bass · Salmon · Miso Black Cod · Pesce spada alla Siciliana

Fat cutting Good match

Shellfish in butter or garlic

Mussels and prawns cooked in butter or oil leave a coating on the tongue. The acidity and the stony finish of this unoaked Amalfi white wash it away, so the next mouthful tastes fresh.

Try with: Mussels · Impepata di cozze · Crab · Oysters

Avoid Clash

Hot curries and chilli-heavy dishes

Chilli heat makes a dry 13% white taste sharper and thinner, and it buries the peach and sage. Keep this bottle for the seafood and starters it was made for; a lightly sweet Moscato d'Asti handles heat far better.

Skip with: Chicken madras · Jungle Curry · Crispy chilli beef · Kimchi jjigae · Pairing guide →

Drinking + cellar

Keeping Tramonti Bianco: a white for the next two or three summers

This is not a wine to lay down. It is made in steel, released after six to eight months, and its point is freshness. Drink the 2025 from 2026 to 2028 and keep it cool. The estate also makes a reserve white, Per Eva, from the same terraces.

Common Questions

Falanghina, Biancolella and Pepella, all grown on the estate's own terraces at Tramonti. The Costa d'Amalfi rules ask for at least 40% Falanghina or Biancolella, alone or combined, and allow other local white grapes, such as Pepella, for the rest.

White peach, lemon and herbs such as sage and thyme, then a crisp, salty palate with a stony edge and a soft finish. It is dry, 13% alcohol, and made in steel, so there is no oak flavour.

Yes. It is made to drink young: best from 2026 to 2028, served well chilled. Six to eight months in steel and a month or two in bottle are all the ageing it gets.

Vino.com is the only UK shop we list for it, with the 2025 at about £24 a bottle, so there is no price to compare between shops. Delivery terms are on the shop's page.

Tramonti is one of three named areas inside the Costa d'Amalfi DOC, with Ravello and Furore. It covers the villages of Tramonti and Maiori: Tramonti sits inland in the hills, Maiori on the coast below it. A white that carries the name must reach 11% alcohol and crop lower than the plain Costa d'Amalfi white.

Seafood and starters, which is the producer's own suggestion. Fried squid, prawns, mussels, a caprese salad or a plain grilled sea bass with lemon all suit its crisp, salty style.
