Tasting Notes

How Castellare's Il Poggiale Riserva tastes

Il Poggiale is 90% Sangioveto, the estate's name for Sangiovese, with 5% each of Canaiolo and Ciliegiolo. It ferments in steel tanks, then spends 12 to 18 months in small oak barrels, a fifth of them new, and 12 months in bottle.

Nose

Violets and cherry come first, with a stony note, as the estate's own notes describe. The grapes grow in one vineyard, Il Poggiale, 350 to 400 metres up on limestone at Castellina in Chianti. After red fruit, drinkers most often pick out oak, tobacco and vanilla.

Palate

Freshness and flavour carry the middle of the palate, around cherry and plum fruit. Antonio Galloni of Vinous scored the 2022 at 92 points and called it "potent and deep", with "very good balance". The 2023 has lively acidity and fine, well-integrated tannin.

Finish

The finish brings back fragrant fruit. In Castellare's fresh 2023 it lasts, with red fruit, floral echoes and a light touch of spice.

Overall

Castellare calls Il Poggiale one of its best wines, and it is the estate's single-vineyard Riserva, first made in 1993. Drinkers rate it highly and pick out red fruit, oak and earthy notes. We would open the 2022 now or keep it until 2037.

Wine fit score

Where Il Poggiale fits: the dinner table and the cellar

Best with food and Best for an occasion lead its scores. Castellare counts Il Poggiale among its best wines.

Best with food 8.8/10

Fresh acidity and real structure make this Sangiovese Riserva a natural match for grilled steak, game and aged cheese, the foods the estate itself suggests.

Best for an occasion 8.6/10

Castellare's single-vineyard Chianti Classico Riserva, first made in 1993, and a bottle that suits a celebration dinner with a steak or a roast.

Best for cellar 8.2/10

A Riserva from one vineyard, with 12 to 18 months in oak and 12 in bottle. Antonio Galloni gives the 2022 a window of 2025 to 2037.

Best intro to this style 6.2/10

Its violet and cherry notes are typical of Sangiovese, so it shows a newcomer what Chianti Classico Riserva tastes like. The price and the oak make it a bigger step than a basic Chianti.

Best value 4.8/10

The 2022 costs about £42 to £46, more than most Chianti Classico Riserva. You pay for one vineyard, low yields and two years or more in the cellar.

Best everyday bottle 2.5/10

At £39 or more a bottle and made to age, this is a wine for a special dinner rather than a weeknight.

Scoring is rule-based and deterministic. The model and weightings are documented in our Wine Fit Score methodology.

What critics scored Il Poggiale's 2022 and 2023

James Suckling scored this wine's 2022 at 95 points and its 2023 at 94. Other critics placed both years at 92 or 93 points.

01

DOC, DOCG, IGT: what the badges mean

Italian wine law sorts bottles into a pyramid. DOCG sits at the top: tightly drawn boundaries, prescribed grapes, mandatory ageing, government tasting before release. DOC is the same idea with looser thresholds. IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) is broader still, requiring only that 85% of the grapes come from the named territory.

Chianti Classico is in the DOCG tier. That is not a quality verdict, it is a description of how much freedom the producer has at vinification and ageing.

Food Pairing

Grilled steak, game and aged cheese with Il Poggiale

Castellare matches Il Poggiale with grilled meat, above all Chianina beef steak, and with game. It also calls aged cheese an interesting partner.

Body matching Strong match

Grilled steak, Florentine style

A big grilled steak needs a red with real weight, and this Chianti Classico Riserva has it. Its fresh acidity also cuts the charred fat, so each bite of beef tastes clean.

Try with: Fiorentina steak · Ribeye steak · Sirloin steak · Fillet steak · More pairings →

Tannin softening Strong match

Venison, pheasant and other game

Rich, dark game meat softens the tannin in this Sangiovese Riserva, so the wine tastes rounder with each mouthful. Its cherry and plum fruit sits well beside a gamey sauce.

Try with: Venison Stew · Roast Pheasant · Roast Duck · More pairings →

Fat cutting Good match

Ragù, lasagne and porchetta

The fresh acidity of this Chianti Classico Riserva cuts through a rich beef ragù or fatty roast pork, so the dish never feels heavy. Its cherry fruit sits easily with tomato.

Try with: Ragu alla bolognese · Lasagna · Porchetta · More pairings →

Salt balance Good match

Aged cheeses

Salt in an aged cheese tames the tannin of this Sangiovese Riserva and brings its fruit forward. Firm, mature cheeses work better here than soft, creamy ones.

Try with: Strong cheddar cheese · Pecorino sardo e pan carasau · Cheese board

Aromatic bridge Good match

Porcini, truffle and slow-cooked veal

Drinkers find earthy, leathery notes in this Chianti Classico Riserva, and they meet the woodland flavour of porcini and truffle halfway. The wine's freshness keeps a rich risotto from feeling heavy.

Try with: Porcini mushroom risotto · Truffle risotto · Ossobuco alla Milanese · More pairings →

Avoid Clash

Hot curries and chilli

Chilli heat makes the tannin and alcohol of this Sangiovese Riserva taste harsh and hot, and it hides the cherry fruit. Save fiery curries and Sichuan dishes for another bottle.

Skip with: Chicken madras · Chicken jalfrezi · Szechuan beef · Crispy chilli beef · Pairing guide →

Common Questions

Il Poggiale is Castellare di Castellina's Chianti Classico Riserva from a single vineyard of the same name at Castellina in Chianti. It is 90% Sangioveto, the estate's name for Sangiovese, with 5% Canaiolo and 5% Ciliegiolo. The first vintage was 1993.

Il Poggiale comes from one vineyard, while the plain Riserva is a selection of the estate's best grapes. Il Poggiale also has 5% Ciliegiolo and ages 12 to 18 months in small oak barrels, a fifth of them new. The plain Riserva spends about 15 months in barrels on their second or third use, then 15 months in bottle.

The 2022 is ready now and should keep until 2037, the window Antonio Galloni of Vinous gives it. Il Poggiale is made as a red of great structure and longevity.

Grilled meat, above all a Chianina beef steak, is the match the estate names first, along with game. It also calls aged cheese an interesting partner.

On this page the 2022 costs about £42 to £46, depending on the shop. The 2023 is about £39 and the 2020 about £47. The 2018 and 2019 are sold here only as magnums, at £109.
