Nose

Fragrant and primary, following Picchioni's scheda tecnica: strawberry, redcurrant and visciola sour cherry lifted by a note of aromatic herbs. Vivino drinkers layer blueberry, plum and violet over that red-fruit core. In the glass it is a deep ruby, nearly opaque, with violet flashes.

Palate

Moderately sweet, never syrupy: fermentation is interrupted by chilling and filtration at around 7% alcohol, so natural grape sugar stays balanced against fresh Barbera acidity. A gentle autoclave presa di spuma keeps it light and softly fizzy, with the full, easy 'beverino' feel the producer aims for and barely a grip of Croatina tannin.

Finish

Clean and moderately persistent, closing on sour cherry; Decantalo's 2024 note finds a surprising mineral edge, in keeping with the sandy, pebbly soils Picchioni farms in the Valle Solinga.

Overall

A textbook Sangue di Giuda dell'Oltrepò Pavese DOC from a ten-hectare estate at Canneto Pavese: sweet, gently sparkling and 7%, built for the dessert table rather than the cellar. Vivino's crowd scores it 3.9 across 386 ratings, with the 2019 ranked in the top 10% of its region on the platform; drink it young and well chilled.

Where to buy Fior del Vento in the UK

Wine fit score

How Fior del Vento scores as an Italian wine pick

Scored as a dessert-table specialist: high marks for beginners and red-fruit puddings, deliberately low on cellar potential. The value read uses the £14.40 Decantalo UK price against artisan sweet-red norms.

Best intro to this style 8.5/10

Sweet, softly fizzy, low tannin and 7% alcohol, the producer's own 'beverino' style: about as unthreatening as Italian red wine gets.

Best value 7.8/10

price_aggregate is empty, so judged editorially: £14.40 at Decantalo UK for a hand-harvested, small-estate DOC sweet red undercuts most artisan dessert wines, which start nearer £15 for a 50 cl bottle.

Best everyday bottle 7.2/10

Low alcohol and £14.40 keep it casual (inverse of its cellar score, no price penalty), tempered because the dessert-slot style is not a nightly pour.

Best with food 7.0/10

A dessert-and-cheese specialist: the sweetness rule confines it to red-fruit puddings, dry pastry and piquant Gorgonzola, where it excels.

Best for an occasion 4.8/10

A niche DOC for the dessert table and festive panettone moments rather than a prestige statement; mid-band by classification and price.

Best for cellar 1.8/10

Steel tanks, autoclave fizz and arrested fermentation build a drink-young wine; nothing here asks for more than three or four years.

Scoring is rule-based and deterministic. The model and weightings are documented in our Wine Fit Score methodology.

DOC, DOCG, IGT: what the badges mean

Italian wine law sorts bottles into a pyramid. DOCG sits at the top: tightly drawn boundaries, prescribed grapes, mandatory ageing, government tasting before release. DOC is the same idea with looser thresholds. IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) is broader still, requiring only that 85% of the grapes come from the named territory.

Sangue di Giuda dell'Oltrepò Pavese is in the DOC tier. That is not a quality verdict, it is a description of how much freedom the producer has at vinification and ageing.

Food Pairing

Sweet-wine rules: what fits Sangue di Giuda

Picchioni's scheda points at red-fruit desserts, dry pastry and, for the brave, piquant Gorgonzola. One rule matters most: keep the dish no sweeter than the wine's arrested-fermentation sugar.

Sweet balance Strong match

Red-fruit desserts first

Sangue di Giuda's first rule is the sweetness rule: the dish must not out-sweeten the wine. Fior del Vento's arrested-fermentation sugar sits comfortably beside berry and jam desserts, exactly the red-fruit dolci Picchioni's scheda names as the ideal match.

Try with: Trifle · Bakewell tart · jam crostata · More pairings →

Salt balance Strong match

Piquant Gorgonzola, the producer's dare

Sweet wine against salty, spicy blue cheese is a classic contrast, and Picchioni's scheda itself suggests piquant Gorgonzola for the brave. The wine's sugar cushions the cheese's salt and sting while the fizz scrubs the fat.

Try with: Blue cheese · Gorgonzola piccante · Stilton · More pairings →

Fat cutting Good match

Fizz against cream

Cold autoclave bubbles and Barbera acidity cut through cream and mascarpone, so the wine stays light where a still sweet red would cloy. At 7% it refreshes the palate instead of adding weight.

Try with: Cheesecake · Eton Mess · panna cotta with berries

Body matching Good match

Light wine, dry pastry

At 7% with soft Croatina tannin, Fior del Vento will not overpower plain bakes. Picchioni's scheda recommends pasticceria secca, and Lombardy's own panettone works the same way at the Christmas table.

Try with: Panettone · cantucci · almond biscotti · More pairings →

Aromatic bridge Good match

Strawberry echoes strawberry

The scheda's own descriptors, fragola, ribes and visciola, bridge straight onto fresh red fruit. Regione Lombardia's tasting guidance for the DOC adds strawberries and peaches, served around 12 C.

Try with: Fresh strawberries · white peaches · red-fruit salad

Avoid Clash

Keep it off the savoury main course

A sweet 7% frizzante red collapses against seared meat and dry savoury mains, and fierce chilli heat magnifies its sugar. Vivino's generic beef and lamb suggestions track the broad regional style, not this sweet wine: stay in the producer's dessert-and-cheese lane.

Skip with: Ribeye steak · lamb vindaloo · Oysters · Pairing guide →

Drinking + cellar

Cellaring Fior del Vento: a drink-young style

This is bottled to be drunk young: steel tanks, autoclave fizz and 7% alcohol leave nothing that needs cellar time. Buy on release and drink within three or four years, while the strawberry fruit is loudest.

Decanting

Common Questions

It is a Sangue di Giuda dell'Oltrepò Pavese DOC: a sweet, gently sparkling red grown in the Valle Solinga at Canneto Pavese, Lombardy. Picchioni interrupts the fermentation by chilling and filtration, so the wine keeps natural grape sugar and lands at about 7% alcohol, with the fizz taken in autoclave.

Moderately sweet rather than syrupy. The producer's scheda describes it as moderately sweet, harmonious and full, and the arrested fermentation leaves clear residual sugar balanced by Barbera acidity and a light fizz. Vivino drinkers score it 3.9 from 386 ratings, citing blueberry, plum and violet notes.

Red-fruit desserts are the classic match: berry trifle, Bakewell tart, jam crostata. Picchioni also recommends dry pastry such as cantucci, and suggests piquant Gorgonzola for a sweet-salty contrast. Keep the dish no sweeter than the wine and serve it chilled.

Croatina and Barbera lead the blend, completed by Uva Rara. The Sangue di Giuda DOC rules require 25-65% each of Croatina and Barbera, with locally grown varieties such as Uva Rara, Ughetta and Pinot Nero allowed up to a combined 45%.

Serve it chilled, at 8-12 C in a tulip glass as the producer advises, and drink it young: this is a steel-and-autoclave wine made for freshness, at its best within three or four years of the vintage.

Decantalo UK lists the 2024 vintage at £14.40 a bottle, £13.32 on offer at the time of writing. Sweet Oltrepò reds are a niche import, so expect a single UK stockist and occasional gaps between restocks rather than wide distribution.
