Green pepper, sage and tomato leaf lead, the grassy side of Sauvignon one Italian reviewer picks out in Saurint. Ripe melon, peach and grapefruit sit underneath. Vivino drinkers most often log tree fruit next to a stony, mineral streak.
Miani Sauvignon Saurint Magnum
Miani
A single-vineyard Sauvignon from Enzo Pontoni, who makes about 8,000 bottles a year in Buttrio. Fermented in French oak: green pepper, sage, melon and a salty, stony edge. The 2023 magnum lists at £340 in the UK.
What Miani's Saurint tastes like

Fermented and aged in French oak for about a year, it is rich rather than sharp: concentrated and soft-textured, with a citrus vein running through it. An Italian reviewer describes an elegant salty edge. That fits the ponca, the marl and sandstone under Miani's hillside vines.
Long and savoury. It closes on wet stones and the honeyed note Vivino tasters often log.
Saurint comes from Enzo Pontoni's best Sauvignon parcels, per US merchant Leon & Son, and drinkers back it: 4.4 on Vivino across 347 ratings. Drink the 2023 magnum from 2025 to about 2033.
Buying a wine that sells out in days
DoctorWine says Miani releases vanish from the few shops that get them within days. The UK has one live listing: the 2023 magnum at Hedonism Wines for £340. The same shop lists the 75cl at £140.
Where Saurint fits, and where it does not
This is a food wine and an occasion wine before it is an everyday buy. The whole estate makes about 8,000 bottles a year, and the magnum costs £340.
A cult Friuli white in large format: Vivino puts the 2016 in the top 2% of wines worldwide and DoctorWine says releases sell through in days.
Salt, acidity and aroma with real body: it cuts frico and fried fish and holds up to roast chicken. Merchant pages on both sides of the Atlantic agree on that set.
Oak-fermented single-vineyard white from tiny yields; Vivino's top-rated Saurint vintages are 7 to 13 years old, and magnums age slower still.
£340 a magnum (£170 per 75cl equivalent) buys scarcity and cult standing, not everyday value.

2023 in Friuli: a hard year Miani got right
Vinous called Friuli's 2023 'great wine in the face of great sacrifice': an extremely trying season that only strict growers mastered. Tasting the young wines, Eric Guido called Miani's 2023 Sauvignon Blanc 'a huge success'.

Vinous called Friuli's 2023 an extremely trying season, titling its report 'great wine in the face of great sacrifice'. Eric Guido still singled out Miani's young 2023 Sauvignon Blanc as 'a huge success'.

Perfect Pairings
Dishes that complement this wine
Salty, herby food for a rich Sauvignon
Miani's home region shows the way: frico, cured ham, creamed salt cod. The salty edge and green-herb aromas do the cutting, and the oak-built body stands up to roast chicken.
Frico and the fried things Friuli loves
Frico is melted Montasio cheese and potato, and the wine's acidity and salty edge slice straight through it. This is a pairing from Miani's home hills. The same cut works on any crisp batter.
Try with: Frico · Gnocco fritto · Fish and Chips · More pairings →
Herb-led fish from the north Adriatic
Saurint's sage, tomato-leaf and green-pepper aromas run straight into herby fish cookery. The citrus vein an Italian reviewer describes keeps seafood bright rather than buried.
Try with: Pesce spada alla Siciliana · Brodetto alla giuliese · herb-roasted sea bass · More pairings →
Roast white meats
Oak fermentation gives Saurint the weight of a light red without the tannin. Roast white meats top the pairing list at US merchant Leon & Son, and Italian merchant Galli Enoteca lists white meat too.
Try with: Roast chicken · roast turkey · pork loin with sage · More pairings →
Cured ham and salty cheese, melon on the side
The wine's own melon and peach echo the classic ham-and-melon plate. Its salty edge meets San Daniele ham, made a few hills west of Buttrio, salt for salt.
Try with: Prosciutto e melone · Baccala Mantecato · aged Montasio · More pairings →
Tomato-sauced pasta
Sauvignon's tomato-leaf note meets the fruit it hints at, and the wine's acidity matches the sauce's. Italian reviewer Simon Italian Food ends his Saurint note with exactly this: a good plate of spaghetti al pomodoro.
Try with: Spaghetti al pomodoro · Spaghetti alla chitarra · Pesce spada alla Siciliana · More pairings →
Hot chilli heat
Chilli heat amplifies alcohol and strips out the herbal detail that makes Saurint worth £340 a magnum. Keep it away from hot curries and hot-sauce dishes: a gently sweet Italian white such as Moscato d'Asti handles heat far better.

Why collectors chase Miani
About 8,000 bottles a year, no website, and releases that DoctorWine says are gone within days. Vivino places the 2016 Saurint in the top 2% of all wines in the world.
Best in the years above; holds without falling over either side.
A short splash decant softens the first-pour edge and opens the aromatics.
Oak-fermented single-vineyard white from tiny yields; Vivino's top-rated Saurint vintages are 7 to 13 years old, and magnums age slower still.
£340.00 is the lowest tracked offer for the current vintage and we have no signal of further discounting.

Miani makes about 8,000 bottles a year across all its wines, and Enzo Pontoni prunes each vine back to one or two bunches. The Italian guide DoctorWine says each release sells out within days.
Expect green pepper, sage, melon and peach, with a salty, stony edge and a rich feel from oak fermentation. Vivino drinkers score it 4.4 from 347 ratings and often log peach, minerals and honey.
