The 2022 opens on dark fruit that Antinori logs as black currant, blueberry, plum and fig, lifted by sweet violet. Behind it sit the markers Vivino tasters cite most across more than 41,000 ratings: tobacco, sweet spice and a chocolatey new-oak note, with a balsamic, graphite edge from the hot vintage.
Marchesi Antinori Solaia
Marchesi AntinoriAntinori's Cabernet Sauvignon-led Super Tuscan from a single vineyard on the Tignanello estate in Chianti Classico, with Sangiovese and Cabernet Franc and around 15 months in new French oak. A collector's Toscana IGT, made only in top vintages.
The 2022 Solaia: black currant, violet and tobacco
Antinori's official note for the 2022 calls out black currants, blueberries, plums and figs with sweet violets, then powdered sugar, Gianduja, white pepper, tobacco and quinine. Across more than 41,000 Vivino ratings the dominant markers are oak, tobacco and chocolate over blackberry and leather, matching this vintage's roughly 15 months in new French oak.

Creamy and rich on entry, the palate rides the freshness Antinori highlights for this vintage rather than sheer power. Cabernet Sauvignon drives cassis and dark berry, while roughly 15 months in new French oak layer on tobacco and cocoa. The tannins are silky but tight-knit, giving a firm, polished frame.
The finish is long and energetic, with sweet tobacco and a balsamic, graphite lift that critics tie to the 2022 season. It closes with real grip that promises a long cellar life.
A benchmark Cabernet-led Super Tuscan from Antinori's Solaia vineyard, more elegant and approachable than a typical vintage yet built to age from 2026 into the 2040s. Vivino's 41,000-plus ratings average 4.6, placing it among Tuscany's most celebrated reds.
Reading Solaia's price: 750ml, magnum and vintage scarcity
Standard 750ml bottles of the 2022 sit around 330 pounds in the UK, with magnums near 730 pounds and vintages stretching back to the 1990s on the secondary market. Because Antinori skips Solaia in weaker years, older top vintages command steep premiums, so a current release is usually the value entry point.
How Solaia scores for cellaring, occasion and value
Solaia rates highest as a cellar and special-occasion wine: a benchmark Super Tuscan built for ageing and gifting rather than a midweek pour. Its food score is strong with red meat, while its value and everyday scores reflect a 300-pound-plus price that sits firmly in collector territory.
A flagship gifting and celebration bottle, one of the original Super Tuscans with a name that carries real prestige.
A benchmark ager: made only in top vintages, with a 2026 to mid-2040s window for the 2022 and a long secondary-market record.
Built for red meat: firm tannins and fresh acidity handle Bistecca alla Fiorentina, braised beef and aged pecorino.
Genuinely fine, but at 300 pounds-plus a bottle it is priced as a luxury, so value hinges on the occasion, not the everyday shelf.
Scoring is rule-based and deterministic. The model and weightings are documented in our Wine Fit Score methodology.

The 2022 vintage: a hot Chianti Classico year saved by August rain
Antinori reports a hot, dry run to mid-August 2022 before rain and cooler nights restored day-to-night swings and even ripening. Cabernet Franc came in on 23 September, Sangiovese on the 26th and 27th, and Cabernet Sauvignon on 5 October. Critics read the result as more elegant and approachable than usual, concentrated but with a fresh, balsamic lift.

Perfect Pairings
Dishes that complement this wine
Bistecca alla Fiorentina softens the tannins
A rare, charred Bistecca alla Fiorentina is the estate's home-region match: the fat and seared crust round off Solaia's firm, tight-knit Cabernet tannins.

Fresh acidity cuts braised beef and veal
The bright freshness Antinori highlights for 2022 slices through the richness of slow-braised beef and marrow-laden veal shank.

Full body matches slow-cooked lamb ragu
Solaia's concentrated, full body stands up to a long-cooked lamb ragu without being flattened, its dark fruit echoing the sauce's depth.
Try with: Agnello Ragu Lucano · More pairings →
Tobacco and oak bridge aged pecorino
The wine's tobacco, leather and new-oak notes bridge to nutty aged pecorino, with crisp pane carasau keeping the match lively.

Skip fiery Thai curries
Chilli heat amplifies Solaia's oak and tannin and flattens its dark fruit, so leave the fresh-chilli Thai curries for a softer, low-tannin red.

Solaia as a cellar and collector wine
Made only in exceptional vintages and skipped in years such as 1980, 1983 and 1992, Solaia is a single-vineyard wine with a decades-long ageing record. Strong releases like 2007 and 2016 trade well above release price, and the 2022's firm, tight-knit tannins and freshness point to a 2026 to mid-2040s window that rewards patient cellaring.
Peak around 2032. Best in the years above; holds without falling over either side.
A benchmark ager: made only in top vintages, with a 2026 to mid-2040s window for the 2022 and a long secondary-market record.

Common Questions
Solaia is led by Cabernet Sauvignon, with Sangiovese and a smaller share of Cabernet Franc grown on its namesake vineyard at Antinori's Tenuta Tignanello. The first 1978 vintage was pure Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc before Sangiovese joined the blend.
Its Cabernet Sauvignon base falls outside the Sangiovese-based Chianti Classico rules, so Solaia is labelled Toscana IGT. It is one of the original Super Tuscans, wines from top Tuscan estates that chose international grapes over appellation status.
The 2022 drinks from around 2026 and should hold into the 2040s. Its silky, tight-knit tannins and bright freshness support a long cellar life, in line with Solaia's decades-long ageing record in strong vintages.
Expect black currant, blueberry, plum and violet lifted by tobacco, sweet spice and new-oak chocolate, over the earthy, leather-edged depth Vivino tasters flag across more than 41,000 ratings. The palate is rich and creamy with a firm, polished tannic frame.
Bistecca alla Fiorentina is the classic match, its charred, fatty crust softening the Cabernet tannins. Antinori's own notes also point to roast meats, aged pecorino and salumi. Skip chilli-heavy dishes, which sharpen the oak and tannin.
No. Antinori bottles Solaia only in exceptional vintages and skipped several years, including 1980, 1981, 1983, 1984 and 1992. That scarcity, alongside its single-vineyard source, underpins its collector demand and price.
