About Casanova della Spinetta

Casanova della Spinetta is the Tuscan estate of the Rivetti family, who built La Spinetta out of the family farm at Castagnole delle Lanze in the early 1960s. After three decades establishing a Piedmontese reputation with single-cru Moscato, Barbera and Barbaresco, the family decided in 2001 to take their hands-on approach to a different territory. They acquired vineyards at Terricciola, in the hills of the province of Pisa, with a deliberate focus on Sangiovese rather than the international grape varieties that dominated Tuscan investment at the time. The estate sits at Localita Casanova, off the Strada Provinciale di Terricciola, on sandy hillside soils that the family describes as giving a Piedmontese interpretation of Sangiovese. The historic Sezzana vineyard supplies the long-aged single-vineyard wine of the same name, made only in the best vintages and held twelve years in cellar before release. Sassontino draws from another historic block with sandy soils. Other plots feed Il Nero di Casanova, the everyday Sangiovese, alongside the rose and Vermentino bottlings. The current range covers eight wines under the Toscana IGT and Chianti DOCG denominations. Il Nero di Casanova, the entry-level Sangiovese, is the most exported reference and takes its name from vino nero, the historic name for Tuscan reds. Sassontino and Sezzana are the two top single-vineyard Sangiovese. Il Gentile di Casanova and Il Colorino di Casanova are Toscana Rosso IGT blends. Chianti Riserva Casanova carries the DOCG label. Toscana Vermentino IGT and Il Rose di Casanova IGT round out the white and rose side. The cellar at Localita Casanova is open to visitors by appointment, from Monday to Saturday, with groups capped at thirty-five people. Reservations are made through the Tuscan office on +39 0587 690 508 or by email at [email protected].
