Antinori's Tenuta Guado al Tasso leads with dense blackcurrant, blackberry and plum, the Cabernet Sauvignon core ringed by tobacco and liquorice-wood from the spell in new French oak barriques. The producer's 2023 note adds a lift of mint and blood orange on top. Across vintages the Vivino crowd repeatedly flags oak, tobacco and chocolate, the wine's single most-mentioned aroma family.

Palate

A Bordeaux blend of roughly 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Franc and a little Petit Verdot, grown on the alluvial clay and skeletal agglomerato bolgherese of the Bolgheri amphitheatre. The tannins are dense and enveloping, fruit ripe but framed by the diurnal swings of the coastal site; stainless-steel fermentation then new-oak ageing give a full, polished mid-palate rather than a rustic one.

Finish

Long and deep, leather and dark-chocolate oak trailing the black fruit, with the fine cocoa-and-tobacco grip that drinkers consistently note. Firm enough to carry the wine well past a decade in bottle.

Overall

The more attainable flagship of Antinori's Bolgheri estate, a genuine Super Tuscan sitting a tier below Sassicaia in price but in the same Cabernet-led idiom. Vivino's 41,853 ratings average 4.5 and Wine-Searcher's critic average runs 91 to 95 across recent vintages; a cellar wine for steak and game, best from its third year onward.

Wine fit score

How Guado al Tasso scores for your table

A high-occasion, cellar-built Bolgheri Superiore that scores well for serious food and ageing, lower for everyday value at over 100 pounds a bottle.

Best for an occasion 9.0/10

Antinori's prestige Bolgheri Super Tuscan at 118 to 148 pounds, rated 4.5 on Vivino, is a natural special-occasion and gifting bottle.

Best for cellar 8.8/10

Bolgheri Superiore aged in new French oak with dense tannin and a stated 10-year-plus longevity; top vintages such as 2016 and 2022 reward a decade or more.

Best with food 8.2/10

A full-bodied, firm-tannin Cabernet Sauvignon-led Bolgheri blend with coastal acidity, excellent with red meat, braises and game but too big for delicate plates.

Best intro to this style 5.2/10

The international Bordeaux grapes read as approachable, but the serious tannin, new-oak structure and high price make this an enthusiast's bottle rather than a first step.

Scoring is rule-based and deterministic. The model and weightings are documented in our editorial methodology.

The disciplinare, the place, the label

Why Guado al Tasso is priced where it is

A 320-hectare single estate, hand-selected fruit, separate parcel vinification and ageing in new French oak barriques all sit behind the price of Antinori's flagship Bolgheri red.

01

DOC, DOCG, IGT: what the badges mean

Italian wine law sorts bottles into a pyramid. DOCG sits at the top: tightly drawn boundaries, prescribed grapes, mandatory ageing, government tasting before release. DOC is the same idea with looser thresholds. IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) is broader still, requiring only that 85% of the grapes come from the named territory.

Bolgheri is in the DOC tier. That is not a quality verdict, it is a description of how much freedom the producer has at vinification and ageing.

Main factor
Single 320-hectare estate, hand-selected fruit
  1. 01

    Single 320-hectare estate, hand-selected fruit

    Cost up

Antinori farm Tenuta Guado al Tasso as one 320-hectare property, picking parcel by parcel and selecting bunches by hand both before and after destemming, which raises labour cost well above a co-op blend.

  2. 02

Ageing in new French oak barriques

    Cost up

The wine spends close to a year maturing in new French oak before a July bottling; new barriques cost several hundred euros each and are a major line in the price of this Bolgheri Superiore.

  3. 03

    Bolgheri amphitheatre terroir and reputation

    Cost up

Vineyards in the prized Bolgheri amphitheatre, beside names like Sassicaia and Ornellaia, carry a land and prestige premium that lifts the bottle to around 118 to 148 pounds in the UK.

  4. 04

    Antinori brand and 26-generation history

    Cost up

A 4.5 Vivino average across 41,853 ratings and the Antinori name support strong, stable pricing; demand for the label rarely discounts even in weaker vintages.

  5. 05

    UK duty and VAT

    Cost up

UK still-wine duty of 2.67 pounds a bottle plus 20% VAT adds roughly 23 pounds of tax to a 118-pound bottle before the retailer's own margin.

  6. 06

Made every year since 1990, no scarcity premium

    Cost down

Unlike tiny single-vineyard cuvees, Guado al Tasso is produced in commercial volume every vintage from 1990 onward, which keeps it well below Sassicaia despite the shared Bolgheri pedigree.

Perfect Pairings

Dishes that complement this wine

Food Pairing

Cabernet tannin and Tuscan tables: what fits Guado al Tasso

The dense tannins and 14.5% weight call for red meat and game. Fiorentina steak, brasato and lamb ragu all bind the structure that delicate plates cannot.

Tannin softening Strong match

Char-grilled Tuscan beef

The dense Cabernet Sauvignon tannins of Guado al Tasso need protein and fat to soften them. The seared crust and rare interior of a bistecca alla fiorentina bind the tannin and let the blackcurrant fruit come forward.

Try with: Fiorentina steak · More pairings →

Body matching Strong match

Long-braised red meat

A full-bodied, new-oak-aged Bolgheri Superiore matches the weight of slow-braised beef without being overwhelmed. The wine's depth and the dish's gelatinous richness meet on equal footing.

Try with: Brasato al Barolo · Ossobuco alla Milanese · More pairings →

Aromatic bridge Good match

Herb-scented lamb ragu

The tobacco, liquorice and mint that Antinori describe on the nose bridge to herb-driven lamb. The savoury ragu echoes the wine's earthy, leathery side noted by Vivino drinkers.

Try with: Agnello Ragu Lucano · More pairings →

Fat cutting Good match

Hard, salty aged cheese

Firm Cabernet tannin and bright coastal acidity cut through the fat and salt of a mature pecorino. The wine's ripe black fruit balances the cheese's tang rather than clashing with it.

Try with: Pecorino sardo e pan carasau · More pairings →

Avoid Clash

Avoid chilli heat and delicate fish

The high alcohol and firm tannin of this 14.5% Cabernet blend amplify chilli burn and overwhelm subtle white fish. Pour a Vermentino di Gallura or Etna Bianco for those plates instead.

Skip with: vindaloo · sushi · grilled sole · spicy Sichuan beef · Pairing guide →

Common Questions

It is a Bordeaux-style blend led by Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a small share of Petit Verdot. In the 2022 vintage the split was 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Antinori have made it from the Tenuta Guado al Tasso estate in Bolgheri since 1990.

Yes. It is the flagship red of Antinori's Bolgheri estate and one of the benchmark Super Tuscans, made from international Bordeaux grapes on the Tuscan coast rather than from Sangiovese. It sits a tier below Sassicaia in price while sharing the same Cabernet-led, oak-aged style.

Comfortably more than ten years for strong vintages. The dense tannins and ageing in new French oak barriques give it a long life; vintages like 2016 and 2022 will reward a decade or more, while the producer calls the young 2023 enjoyable now with high cellaring potential.

Red meat and game. Its firm Cabernet tannins suit char-grilled bistecca alla fiorentina, brasato al Barolo, ossobuco and lamb ragu, and it cuts the fat of a mature pecorino. Avoid chilli heat and delicate white fish, which the wine's structure overwhelms.

Highly. It averages 4.5 out of 5 across 41,853 Vivino ratings, and Wine-Searcher's critic average runs between 91 and 95 across recent vintages, with Wine Advocate scoring the 2022 vintage 96.
