Wine fit score

How this Brunello scores for your table and cellar

Scored as a structured, tannic, high-acid Tuscan red: a benchmark cellar and special-occasion wine that shines with red meat and game, less suited to everyday weeknight drinking at this price.

Best for cellar 9.0/10

A DOCG-mandated, oak-aged Brunello from an exceptional vintage with important structure: built to age fifteen to twenty years.

Best for an occasion 9.0/10

Brunello di Montalcino is among Italy's most prestigious reds, and this flagship single vineyard from a top vintage carries real celebration weight.

Best with food 8.6/10

A structured, tannic, high-acid Sangiovese built for rich food: superb with red meat, game and aged cheese, though too assertive for light or delicate dishes.

Best value 7.2/10

Premium Brunello pricing at 64 to 81 pounds, but a single-vineyard wine scoring 94 to 96 points over-delivers against pricier crus from the 2019 vintage.

Scoring is rule-based and deterministic. The model and weightings are documented in our Wine Fit Score methodology.

How the 2019 Poggio alle Mura drinks

2019 was an exceptional Montalcino year. A cold April and May delayed the vines, then a warm, dry summer and sunny September gave optimal ripening, a structured, age-worthy Brunello carried on soft, velvety tannins.

2019 is an exceptional Montalcino vintage. An unusually cold April and May delayed the vines, then a warm, dry summer and a sunny September brought optimal ripening. The result is a structured Brunello of real depth, with soft, velvety tannins and the balance to age for two decades.

The disciplinare, the place, the label

Why Banfi helped shape modern Brunello

Castello Banfi mapped its Montalcino vineyards through zonation studies begun in 1980 and selected its own Sangiovese clones from research started in 1982. Poggio alle Mura is named for the medieval castle at the heart of the estate in southern Montalcino.

01

DOC, DOCG, IGT: what the badges mean

Italian wine law sorts bottles into a pyramid. DOCG sits at the top: tightly drawn boundaries, prescribed grapes, mandatory ageing, government tasting before release. DOC is the same idea with looser thresholds. IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) is broader still, requiring only that 85% of the grapes come from the named territory.

Brunello di Montalcino is in the DOCG tier. That is not a quality verdict, it is a description of how much freedom the producer has at vinification and ageing.

  1. 01

Single-vineyard estate Sangiovese on the Poggio alle Mura slopes

    Cost up

Estate fruit from zonation-mapped sites and Banfi's own selected clones, picked at a low 60 quintals a hectare, costs far more than Sangiovese bought by the tonne.

  2. 02

Brunello DOCG ageing: two years in French botti and barriques

    Cost up

Banfi holds the wine 40% in 60 and 90 hectolitre French casks and 60% in 350 litre barriques for at least two years, tying up barrels, cellar space and capital before release.

  3. 03

Low estate yield, well under the disciplinare ceiling

    Cost up

At 60 quintals a hectare the estate crops a quarter below the 8 tonne DOCG limit, trading volume for concentration on every bottle.

  4. 04

Critical reputation across the 2019 vintage

    Cost up

James Suckling 96, Kerin O'Keefe 95 and Wine Spectator 94 for the 2019 keep demand for a limited single-vineyard release firm and support the premium price.

  5. 05

    Banfi Horizon hybrid fermentation tanks

    Cost up

Fermentation in Banfi's proprietary steel-and-French-oak Horizon tanks reflects decades of research investment that a basic cooperative red never carries.

  6. 06

UK duty and VAT on a 15% still wine

    Cost up

UK alcohol duty of 2.67 pounds a bottle plus 20% VAT take roughly 15 pounds out of the 64-pound UK shelf price before the retailer's margin.

Perfect Pairings

Dishes that complement this wine

Food Pairing

Sangiovese structure at the Tuscan table: what fits this Brunello

Brunello's firm tannin and bright Sangiovese acidity were built for rich Tuscan cooking, from Fiorentina steak and game to truffle pasta and aged pecorino. Banfi positions it as a meditation wine for ripe cheeses too.

Tannin softening Strong match

Fiorentina steak and grilled red meat

Brunello's firm Sangiovese tannin binds to the protein and fat of a rare T-bone, softening on the palate while the wine's acidity cuts the char. The 2019's decidedly important structure needs the richness of grilled beef to read as velvet rather than grip.

Try with: Fiorentina steak · Tagliata · Brasato al Barolo · Arrosticini · More pairings →

Body matching Strong match

Wild game and slow braises

Full body meets full body: the wine's weight and depth match wild boar, venison and long braises without either side flattening the other. Its leather and forest-floor notes echo the gamey, savoury character of the dish.

Try with: Brasato al Barolo · Ossobuco alla Milanese · Wild boar ragu · Spezzatino di pecora · More pairings →

Aromatic bridge Good match

Truffle and mushroom pasta

The tertiary tobacco, leather and dried-mushroom notes the critics and Vivino drinkers flag bridge straight to earthy umami. Sangiovese acidity keeps a buttery truffle sauce fresh while the savoury aromatics harmonise.

Try with: Tagliatelle al tartufo · Mushroom risotto · Pappardelle ai funghi · Polenta with porcini · More pairings →

Fat cutting Good match

Aged pecorino and hard cheeses

Tannin and bright acidity scythe through the fat and salt of a mature hard cheese, resetting the palate between bites. Banfi recommends the wine with ripe cheeses, and its black-cherry fruit balances their savoury depth.

Try with: Pecorino sardo e pan carasau · Aged Pecorino Toscano · Parmigiano Reggiano · Caciocavallo · More pairings →

Acidity matching Good match

Tomato-rich roasts and ragu

Sangiovese's natural acidity is built for tomato, so it lifts a slow roast or a meaty ragu rather than clashing with it. The wine's structure stands up to the savoury richness while keeping each mouthful bright.

Try with: Porchetta · Lasagna · Pappardelle al ragu · Roast lamb · More pairings →

Avoid Clash

Delicate fish and fierce chilli heat

Brunello's firm tannin turns metallic against delicate white fish and sushi, and at 15% it has no sweetness to tame chilli heat, which only amplifies the alcohol. Light salads and fresh goat cheese are simply overwhelmed by its structure.

Skip with: Sushi and sashimi · Steamed sea bass · Thai green curry · Goat cheese salad · Pairing guide →
