Strawberry, citrus and gentle bubbles

The Pinot Nero that tints this Prosecco salmon-pink also drives its fruit: strawberry and raspberry over peach, pear and a citrus lift, the profile Vivino's 90 reviewers report. Light at 11.5% alcohol, it stays fresh and gently fizzy.

Salmon-pink in the glass, the nose leads with ripe strawberry and raspberry, the red-berry signature of the Pinot Nero that Scipione Giuliani blends into the Glera base. Vivino's 90 reviewers add peach and pear with a citrus lift over the top.

Palate

Light and gently fizzy at 11.5% alcohol, with soft red fruit and a citrus edge. Decanter's tasting of the cuvee found a good bite of acidity balancing the residual sugar, so the Brut dosage reads dry rather than sweet.

Finish

Fine, uplifting bubbles carry a short, clean citrus close. Decanter called the style muted and restrained rather than showy, which is what keeps this an easy pour.

Overall

A salmon-pink Prosecco DOC Rose that rates 3.9 on Vivino across 90 reviews, with an earlier vintage scoring 88 points at Decanter. At around 11 pounds it is aperitivo fizz for antipasti and fried bites, not a wine to age.

A Laithwaites exclusive at around 11 pounds

Il Papavero is Laithwaites' own Italian range, so this pink Prosecco is not sold under a producer label elsewhere. It rates 3.9 on Vivino across 90 reviews, and an earlier vintage took 88 points at Decanter: dependable everyday pink fizz.

Who this pink Prosecco is for

Best for easy aperitivo drinking and casual celebrations: beginner-friendly, light at 11.5%, and priced for a weeknight rather than a milestone. Skip it if you want something to cellar or a wine with real weight.

Best intro to this style 8.8/10

Soft red fruit, gentle bubbles and 11.5% alcohol make this an easy, low-risk way into Italian sparkling rose.

Best everyday bottle 8.4/10

Affordable, low in alcohol and crowd-friendly, this is a Tuesday-night or picnic pour more than a special-occasion bottle.

Best with food 8.2/10

Versatile aperitivo and antipasti fizz: bubbles and acidity handle fried bites, salumi and fresh cheese, though it is too light for hearty mains.

Best for an occasion 7.8/10

Salmon-pink Prosecco Rose is celebration-coded and party-ready, though its light frame keeps things casual rather than grand.

Scoring is rule-based and deterministic. The model and weightings are documented in our Wine Fit Score methodology.

Why the 2024 is made to drink now

This is a fresh, tank-method fizz, not a wine that gains from age. The 2024 is built to drink in its first year or two, while the strawberry fruit and citrus lift are at their brightest. There is no vintage chart to chase here.

Charmat-method Prosecco Rose for immediate drinking; the 2024 is at its best young, with fresh strawberry and citrus. No cellaring upside.

The disciplinare, the place, the label

Prosecco DOC Rose, allowed only since 2020

Pink Prosecco is young: the Prosecco DOC only permitted a rose in 2020, made by blending 10 to 15 percent Pinot Nero, vinified in red, into the Glera base. This bottle sits squarely in that new category, from the broad DOC zone across Veneto and Friuli.

01

DOC, DOCG, IGT: what the badges mean

Italian wine law sorts bottles into a pyramid. DOCG sits at the top: tightly drawn boundaries, prescribed grapes, mandatory ageing, government tasting before release. DOC is the same idea with looser thresholds. IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) is broader still, requiring only that 85% of the grapes come from the named territory.

Prosecco is in the DOC tier. That is not a quality verdict, it is a description of how much freedom the producer has at vinification and ageing.

Direction
Mostly cost down

Main factor
Charmat (Martinotti) tank method
  1. 01

    Charmat (Martinotti) tank method

    Cost down

Prosecco Rose takes its bubbles in pressurised autoclaves for at least 60 days rather than bottle by bottle, holding production cost and the shelf price near 11 pounds far below traditional-method fizz.

  2. 02

    Negociant sourcing, no estate

    Cost down

Il Papavero owns no winery: Scipione Giuliani buys Glera and Pinot Nero from growers across the Prosecco DOC plain, avoiding estate overheads and keeping the price down.

  3. 03

    Prosecco DOC, not Conegliano DOCG

    Cost down

The fruit carries the broad Prosecco DOC appellation across Veneto and Friuli, not the pricier Conegliano Valdobbiadene hill DOCG, so the raw material costs less.

  4. 04

    Pinot Nero for the rose

    Cost up

Prosecco Rose rules require 10 to 15 percent Pinot Nero vinified in red, a small red-wine step that adds a little cost over a straight white Glera Prosecco.

  5. 05

    UK duty and VAT

    Cost up

UK sparkling-wine duty runs about 2.67 pounds a bottle in 2026 and 20 percent VAT sits on top, so tax is a large slice of the 11-pound retail price.

Prosecco Rose takes its bubbles in pressurised autoclaves for at least 60 days rather than bottle by bottle, holding production cost and the shelf price near 11 pounds far below traditional-method fizz.

Food Pairing

Aperitivo fizz for fried bites and salumi

Treat it as an aperitivo. The fine bubbles and citrus acidity cut through fried gnocco fritto, arancini and pizza fritta, while the Brut dryness balances salty salumi. Keep it away from fiery chilli, which overwhelms the light frame.

Fat cutting Strong match

Fine bubbles scrub fried Italian street food

The fine, gentle bubbles and citrus acidity lift frying oil off the palate between bites. Cutting fried fat is the single strongest use for a light 11.5% Brut fizz.

Try with: Arancini · Pizza Fritta · Gnocco fritto · More pairings →

Salt balance Good match

Brut dryness against salty salumi

Gnocco fritto is torn open around prosciutto and salame. The Brut, low-sugar style and citrus lift balance the salt and cured fat without turning cloying.

Try with: Gnocco fritto with salumi · More pairings →

Aromatic bridge Good match

Red-berry Pinot Nero meets tomato and basil

The strawberry and raspberry the Pinot Nero brings echo the sweetness of ripe tomato, while the fresh acidity handles the milky mozzarella.

Try with: Insalata Caprese · More pairings →

Acidity matching Good match

Citrus acidity lightens a rich tuna sauce

Vitello Tonnato drapes cold veal in a creamy tuna and caper sauce. The citrus acidity Decanter flags cuts that richness and refreshes each slice.

Try with: Vitello Tonnato · More pairings →

Body matching Good match

A light aperitivo pour before dinner

At 11.5% and feather-light, it opens a meal without filling you up, pairing with the first fresh and fried bites of an Italian antipasto spread.

Try with: Insalata Caprese · Arancini · More pairings →

Avoid Clash

Fiery chilli overwhelms the delicate fizz

Serious chilli heat magnifies the soft sweetness and swamps the light 11.5% frame, leaving the wine tasting thin. Save the pink Prosecco for milder plates.

Glera, Pinot Nero and the Prosecco DOC

Common Questions

Il Papavero is Laithwaites' own Italian range, and the Rose Prosecco is made by Scipione Giuliani, a negociant winemaker from Conegliano who buys Glera and Pinot Nero from growers across the Prosecco DOC zone rather than running an estate.

Glera is the principal grape, with a small share of Pinot Nero (Pinot Noir) vinified in red to give the salmon-pink colour and red-berry note. Prosecco Rose DOC rules allow 10 to 15 percent Pinot Nero.

It is labelled Brut, so it tastes dry. Decanter noted a good bite of acidity balancing the residual sugar, with soft red fruit, which keeps any sweetness in check.

Vivino tasters across 90 reviews report strawberry and raspberry, peach and pear, and a citrus lift over fine, gentle bubbles. It is light and fresh at 11.5% alcohol.

Pour it as an aperitivo or with fried Italian bites such as gnocco fritto with salumi, arancini or pizza fritta, where the bubbles and acidity cut the fat. Keep it away from fiery chilli dishes like Pizza Diavola.

Drink it young. This is a fresh Charmat-method fizz built for the first year or two after the 2024 vintage, not a wine to cellar.
